Amazing landscapes, wild life , fauna, flora, wonderfull sunsets, skywalks, romantic places, exotic rivers, canopy.... like the heaven.. this is the meaning of monteverde, the paradise of million people likes to watch exotic birds, quiet walks on natural trails full of vegetation and weird animals better known as part of the costa rica's seven wonders and has been callen by national geographic the jewel in the crown of cloud forest reserves. The bulk of Monteverde's rain forest and cloud forest can be found in the Reserva Biológica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde, a private nature reserve created in 1972 by scientist George Powell and Quaker Wilford Guindon. We had a specialised natural history tour in the cloud forest on Monday, seeing another huge variety of new plants and animlas. There is a tree here which still has no official scientific name, also a new type of assassin bug. Our guide showed us specialised strangler figs and strange plants, including one which makes your mouth bleed if you are stupid enoug to bite it. The place we are staying is a branch of the campus of the Universitry of Georgia, so there is a good library and lots of experts on hand to help to undertand what we see. We are staying in wooden huts and the whole campus is surrounded on all side by the jungle. In the afternoon we had an introduction to tropical insects, including an opportunity to collect some and ... read more

We left the arenal and our luxurious hotel yesterday morning and travelled for 4 and a half hours on un made up roads into the monteverde mountains to our basic university accommodation located in a cloud forest. The road was so bad that half of us had to shift to the opposite side of the bus to counterbalance it whilst manoevreing around a pothole....so big it could have tipped us over! After dinner, a lucky few managed to see an opossum and an olenka which were feeding on the ripe bananas. The night walk was cancelled due to the heavy rain and so a table tennis tournament ensued. Ollie triumphed in the singles tournament and Callum and Miss Slade won the doubles very convincingly!! This morning we went on a trek through the forest with an ... read more

We all but had to be forcibly removed from our hotel room at the waterfall gardens, we were so in love with it and its surroundings, but it was time to go back to nine dollar a night hostels and other adventures. So off we went to Monteverde, which is always pronounced by the locals with great gusto (and by Molly and Laura who have a penchant for the dramatic), with an emphasis on the middle two syllabals. How you might imagine an enthusiastic Italian pronouncing fettUCINe! Monteverde translates to green mountain, which I must say, although simple as can be, is a rather appropiate title for the area of Costa Rica tucked away admist endless cloud-laden hills of leafy green. You can´t take a 4by6 photo of Monteverde and do it justice, at least not ... read more

so we woke up @ 8 this morning and headed toward la fortuna by taxi to get to the boat that was gonna take us across lake arenal, on of the largest lakes in costa rica...but on the way our taxi broke down, got a flat tire, and drove 2 miles an hour..making us late for the first boat. So we arrived in La fortuna about 2hrs after we anticipaited...but it was a fun trip. across the lake we were at the foothills of one of the 10 most active volcanos in the world peering up at is massiveness. There were clouds covering the peek and eagles circling the clouds...a bliss to say the least. On the way there we ran into to british girls that my roadmates were talking to the night before and trash ... read more

Nos despertamos temprano esta mañana, to get ready for our plans that we made the night before in between our horrible salsa and wandering of this town. On the floor of out dorm room clothes were strewn every where. I guess we stumbled in after the bar and just cleared our beds and crashed...so we picked up opened the window to disperse the strong aroma of 3 dudes that havent showered in three days, which I finally got a hot one in today, and headed to the front of the hostel. I grabbed a cup of coffee and went outside to the burrito vender and got me a breakfast burrito, which ·I regretted the rest of the day....damn gas from beans. Our shuttle picked us up at around 9 and we headed to the sante elana ... read more

It was about 6am.....the room was filled with squiters...and I was barely awake from my sleep, listening to my travel partners horrible alarm going off so that we could catch out bus to the puntarenas ferry and head toward monteverde...eventually we woke and headed out. got to the first bus stop and and were hassled by taxi drivers constantly underminding eachother for cheap prices...eventually we hopped a ride with this cuban fellow to cabanos...on the way he was telling us about how he is headed to court to fight an assault charge...I was in the back seat wondering if we were gonna get robbed and dropped off in a random spot...but we made it..got to the ferry station, buy our tickets and wait...for 2hrs...2hrs.I could have slept in and got those free pancakes from our hostel ... read more

Throughout most of the night, heavy rain had been falling but by morning it had given way to dreary yet very drizzly skies. After a final awesome breakfast at the resort dining room, we were picked up for our transportation to Monteverde. Our transportation consisted of a boat ride across Lake Arenal and then in vans through the unpaved dirt roads up to Monteverde. We were picked up in front of the resort lobby and along with 4 other people, we drove about 15 minutes to the dock. Immediately, the whole thing looked very sketchy. Along the water's edge was this very rickety looking boat that was already almost filled to capacity. We were all wondering if this thing was safe and were all having second thoughts. We had to carry our luggage down this steep ... read more

A Sunny Day in Monteverde

After staying a few nights at Arenal and bore witness to an active Volcano spew burning lava rocks. We decided to head to Monteverde and its renowned Cloud Forest. Don't know what Cloud Forest meant or what qualifies one. All I could think at the time is maybe the area is surrounded with fog. I'll probably need to some research and get a sense of the name. We ventured to the national park, greeted by howler monkeys; for lack of a better term "howling" as we pass along. An abundance of varied species of birds surrounded us. The guides mentioned that in 2009, they counted 500+ of different species in just that are alone. Good to know that there's a few remaining natural habitats free from human harm. As we headed back, we stumbled upon a ... read more
