My mystery has been solved...the creature that comes out only after dark is a ----frog; but not like our frogs, MUCH LOUDER, FOR A LOT LONGER; gives you the creeps. Honestly, last night I could swear that whatever it was, because I didn't know what it was at the time, was going to come right through the screen. The reason I now know it is a frog or many of them is because last night when I went to bed I heard my only neighbor Rob outside and yelled out to him, through the screen, asking him if he knew what would be making all these terrible sounds I'd been hearing. Of course the dam frog or frogs didn't make a peep while we were talking. Anyway, that is his theory and I like it so ... read more

Whatever way they blow my friends, they blow warm here. These words come from a scottish folksong kind of I believe. Again, I have to sit overlooking the Pacific and marvel at my "horse shit luck", as my sister said to me to be here, in this amazing location - it is nothing short of magnificant - not Bali you understand, which may always be my first love but pretty freaking wonderful nevertheless. Paradise does have its mundane however; yes, this morning before I go sightseeing I need to do the washing.. ugh... where is Maria when you need her? Then I will blend up a smoothie with fresh pineapple and banana and away I will go in my tank of a vehicle. Oh yes, the rooster is crowing so my wash must be finished. Take ... read more

Arrived here safe and sound after flying with Spirit Airlines that was reported to be an awful airlines to fly with. I found them efficient, helpful, to a fault, courteous and had a sense of humor - something like our WestJet. You CANNOT go over their baggage limit otherwise you pay BIG dollars, which unfortunately meant I could bring almost nothing in the forty lb limit but it WAS cheap. Francisco met me at the airport. Francisco is a young man of about 42 married with one child, that the people who own the house I am renting have hired to look after the place for them. Francisco is nothing short of amazing and I could not have been successful in transitioning into the place without his help. I would not be able to send this ... read more

We’re back on the travels! We have just had two weeks in Costa Rica, at a place called School of the World in a town called Jaco, where we spent our time surfing (Lucy learning, Tom perfecting) and doing Spanish lessons. We had a really great time, the town we were staying in was pretty average but we met a lot of nice people and the surf was good. Lucy’s friend from home, Lucy came along too so that was a fun addition. Our Spanish classes consisted of three hours of learning a day which was pretty tough but it’s paid off as we’ve surprised ourselves with how much we have picked up. We have successfully managed to ask a couple of questions, such as ‘where is the bus stop?’, ‘can I have a coffee with ... read more

The next part of our road trip brought us to Jaco. A bustling little town on the Pacific Ocean, half way down the coast. The beach in my opinion wasn't as nice as Tamarindo, but stunning sunsets and great little town. Out friend from Alejuala came and visited us for a night, and we had a good time with him hanging by the pool and he took us to a little ice cream store called Pop's. Reminded me of a Costa Rican version of Dairy Queen. We met up with our new friends and they invited us to go zip lining with them. When they first invited us, I said “sure!" then proceeded to lose 2 night’s sleep. On the day of the terrifying event, I had pretty much convinced myself i wasn’t going to go. ... read more

Good morning everyone. Yesterday I got knee deep in some tropical paradise. Jeremy and I woke up early (5am) to take the bus out to Jacó, a beautiful beach on the pacific side. I guess I should paint a picture of exactly where I am though. San Jose is a highly elevated plateau practically surrounded by mountains and seven active volcanoes. We used our Spanish and charm to eventually figure out what bus we needed. Then we decided to just take a taxi out to Jacó. Our driver Francisco, was also the chief of the San Jose Red Cross and he also had another job that I didn't really understand. Fruit smuggler or something. It was so cool to see the country side. We even had a chance to drive by the President's house. Costa Rica ... read more

The only thing I had planned for our last full day in Costa Rica was driving to San Jose to stay the night before the early flight home. When I woke up I was anxious to do something. Poor Sophie… she never really had any time to relax. She is a great sport though and was completely on board with driving down to Manuel Antonio and give it another try. Excited to get going we hustled through breakfast and back to the room to pack our things. With all of the souvenirs I was surprise that I was able to zip up my suitcase, I only take a carryon refusing to check a bag. We loaded up our suitcases into the SUV, checked out and were on our way. The first stop was at the River ... read more

We booked a shuttle that picked us up right in our hostel and dropped us off at our hostel in Jaco; you just have to ask. We were tired from travelling the chicken bus way so we decided, to be able to get from point A to point B comfortably, we have to resort to shuttles. The drive was was indeed comfortable and the scenery along the way is exquisite. The driver took us in the mountain side where we get to experience the cloud forest early in the morning. Very mysterious with the mist enveloping the trees that surrounds the narrow highway atop the mountain. The roads were filled with sharp turns and at some point it offers a view of the valley in the horizon, ravines filled with trees and jagged rocks, and small ... read more

Be sure to look at the pictures below the ads—the ads in the middle of the blog/pictures seems to be new this year—so if you don’t know better you’d only see 3 or 4 pictures instead of 15 or 20 (or more today) that I usually include. On Sunday we drove into Jaco again. This was Michele and Gerry’s first time there. After another fish taco at our favorite place, we found a place to book a waterfall tour that we all thought would be fun. Joe (from Denver) told us that Monday tours were booked but when we said we were in Bejuco, he said that Mike (who is from Chicago), who also works there, lives there too and he could not only do the tour but he could pick us up at our house ... read more
