Wow what a week...it hardly seems like I have been here almost 4 months now and will be leaving soon. This past week was Thanksgiving and we managed to have a 4 day weekend. Most of my friends went off to Nicaragua to celebrate but some went out to the Osa Peninsula to go camping as well. I ended up staying around town and relaxing and savoring the time in Costa Rica. For Thanksgiving I ended up skyping with everybody at Grandmas while the family dinner was taking place. It was nice to see the extended family and chat about what I was doing and what was going on at the traditional feast. Thank God mom assured me that we'd have more Pecan Pie when I returned!
That weekend I ended up attending choir practice on Friday for the first time since the grand trip to Panama...so about 4 weeks. Its been kind of frustrating because I kept wanting to attend but I always had fieldtrips and other things with the program planned. There I found out the next day we were headed off to Limon to sing in concerts there. It turns out of the choir members is from
Limon and helped organize the event.
Limon is considered one of the most dangerous areas and stricken with crime and drugs. Its also one of the largest seaports in Costa Rica and important to the economy. Here there is a lot of poverty and a huge African population. While here I was surprised at the beauty of the city. To be frank i thought it was going to be more like a trash heap but it turned out to be very nice but a little run down.
The choir was split between 3 hotels for spending one night. It was interesting because the church was simply breathtaking with so many stained glass windows and very airy due to the climate. The climate was very hot and muggy with sweating being a constant threat. The church was comprised of walls of concrete with decorative openings in designs like some of the fences you see in the US. The rafters had openings at the top as well to let air pass through.
When we first arrived we had some time to explore the city and relax, however after lunch and before the first concert it started to downpour and
wind picked up. So the choir decided to play card games in the hotel. I must have played Uno for about an hour and a half with the guys! It was so much fun.
The first concert was at night after Saturday mass and it wasnt the best, probably because of unfamiliar surroundings and a little bit of nerves. We hoped to do better the next day. However we still got our dinner that night provided by the nice old church ladies and TCBY. There TCBY serves full meals as well as icecream. Sunday morning we sang at mass and then had the concert after mass. There were a lot of people there to hear the concert and I got to sing christmas carols! Such a good time...I dont want it to end and am sad for the final concert.
