Well its been a while since I wrote on the blog and I figure I should catch up and record what has been happening. I'm still sick and went to the doctor for the 4th time today. I have a 3rd round of antibiotics and pain killers, and I got a shot today so my throat would stop swelling shut. I dont know what it is, but I am very worried and frustrated that we cant find a cause. Also I was on bedrest for 3 days earlier in the week, and I didnt write much because I didnt have much to report other than staring out the apartment windows hoping to be better. Now I keep focusing on getting well but there seem to be a lot of things wrong and unknown with the health. ... read more

It was an interesting night last night. We got invited to the Snow Festival at Malargue and we were "VIP" people there. We ended up meeting the governor of the province, and we talked again with the mayor and some of his deputies. The event started around 930 and we didnt leave till 445am! When we were leaving, there was still another band that was just starting to perform at the time. During the 7 hours we were there, we got served a 5 course meal consisting of 2 appetizers, a small pastry with marinated vegetables inside, beef and chicken in a super rich sauce with vegetables, and desert of a chocolate mouse cake with a tangy sauce. The food was really good and there was a ton of it! One of the mayor's assistants tried ... read more

Well we went to the Bardas Blancas area today. We rode with the head ranger of the area and we visited the caves there. He also suggested doing projects to create wind power using turbines for the local ranger station. After we visited the caves, we went down into the village and met the local authority (representative of the mayor of Malargue). We saw where we would be staying for our trip to work on the well there. Unfortunately we also ran into problems because the well has a lot more sulfide within the well than what we previously thought. It turns out there is almost tripple the amount of sulfide than we predicted. We are looking into revising the system to take into account the high levels of sulfide. On another note it looks like ... read more

It was quite the first day that we had in country. We arrived in Malargue at 2am in the morning and our first meet was at 9 with the mayor. The mayor was wanting the meeting to be a small and private affair but the other officials got word that we were in the office and kept barging in and then somebody called the media. Needless to say the mayor was not pleased; however it was kind of funny to watch. We had a blast talking to the mayor and we were able to emphasize the project in Bartas Blancas as our top priority. For distinguished guests they have them sign a "gold book" and we signed and wrote a little message of thanks within it. We really felt like we had a great welcome. I ... read more

Wow what a week...it hardly seems like I have been here almost 4 months now and will be leaving soon. This past week was Thanksgiving and we managed to have a 4 day weekend. Most of my friends went off to Nicaragua to celebrate but some went out to the Osa Peninsula to go camping as well. I ended up staying around town and relaxing and savoring the time in Costa Rica. For Thanksgiving I ended up skyping with everybody at Grandmas while the family dinner was taking place. It was nice to see the extended family and chat about what I was doing and what was going on at the traditional feast. Thank God mom assured me that we'd have more Pecan Pie when I returned! That weekend I ended up attending choir practice on ... read more

Wow, this is just crazy...here we are with less than 2 weeks of class left and the final week of exams and we are done. This past week I had my final exam in tropical ecology and it was a doozy. It was an open book exam and we could use any of our notes. Out of 10 or 12 questions we had to answer 7 of them, and we had three hours to complete them in short essay format. The questions were really specific and not all the answers were in the books and lectures which was frustrating...however its done! All of us walked out of the exam feeling like our brains had been turned into mush and pulverized. That exam was on Thursday, and the following day we had a huge fiesta with all ... read more

So this past weekend I took another trip. I went with the other USAC group here in Costa Rica to Volcan Arenal again. I have been there before but I hadnt done the activities that we did this past weekend. The whole weekend was simply a blast! We left Friday for the volcano and that whole experience was an interesting thing. This past week has been a week of solid rain and there have been a lot of consequences. For example around 20 people died close to San Jose due to a mudslide burying houses and the road to Puntarenas was closed due to a mudslide as well. When we heard this news, it meant that I couldnt be picked up by the rest of the group (they were from another city but San Ramon was ... read more

After another long boat ride back to the docks, we boarded a bus to take us to the border of Panama and Costa Rica. There we went through Customs and Immigration and I have never felt like I was burning alive until that moment. I swear less than 5 minutes and all of us were literally soaked in sweat. It was like an oven there! To cross the border between Panama and Costa Rica you had to walk across a sketchy bridge that was rusted and a little shaky (granted there were cars and trucks passing on the same bridge) and at the end a truck was waiting for customs when we crossed, so we were literally holding onto the truck and inching our way past while hoping we didnt miss our footing and fall off ... read more

Wow I never knew how much fun I could have! This trip was absolutely amazing and the only thing I'm sorry for was not getting enough pictures of wildlife. :( I saw pelicans, boa constrictors, freshwater crabs, ospreys, parrots, toucans, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and more! So we arrived by boat to Tortuguero and apparently it's the only way to access this town. The boat ride was about 40 minutes as we cruised by different parts of the jungle. Right before we turned to head up a different tributary/ canal of the river we got to see the estuary where the river met the ocean. I cant describe how awesome that looked, to see waves coming upstream of the river and creating the mix of water was amazing! When we got to the resort, yes it ... read more

So this weekend I really relaxed after the exams, since one set of classes just got finished. I hope to find out the grades soon although I dont think they would be very bad since I studied a lot especially for the Spanish Composition exam. Crossing my fingers here. Anyways on Saturday I ended up going to a reunion of my tico mom's family. It was amazing (and crazy). The reason we were going was the celebration of my mom's mom's death. My mom has 11 brothers and sisters, and about 40 or so nephews and nieces, and then their children as well. It was complete chaos but in a good way. I met so many people and cant remember any of their names. Talk about fun! That was all I really did this past weekend, ... read more
