The birds in Costa Rica are HUGE and COLORFUL and BEAUTEOUS, and at Zoo Ave they walk around and fly outside of their enclosures, making it possible to come right up to them. This was a really fun day trip to do alone, and I basically had the entire park to myself because it was the middle of a weekday. This was the first time in Costa Rica that I saw someone wandering around holding an ENORMOUS MACHETE, but it was definitely not the last. The guy was a zoo worker, probably on his way to chop some leaves down to feed the animals.... read more

Geo: 10.0704, -84.5041When we first contacted the owner of this house to arrange for our rental, Jeff told her we would like to meet some ex-pats. She wrote back to tell us that Debra and Joe, who live at the top of our hill had moved here from Maryland about 18 months ago and would be thrilled to talk with us. A couple of days later, she contacted Jeff again to tell him we had been invited to a birthday party that Debra and Joe would be hosting while we are here! So today we're going to a birthday party for someone we don't know at the home of people we've never met - and my mother told me not to talk to strangers. hahaha! This morning I have peanut butter toast for breakfast while Jeff has ... read more

Geo: 10.0704, -84.5041There is a man with a machete at our door. It's okay, he is Juan, the gardener. After intoducing himself, he asks if it is okay with us if he sharpens his machete on the carport. He uses an electric sharpener and it will be noisy. Mind you..this whole conversation takes place is poor Spanish and worse English! Whew.We spent pretty much the whole day with Ana and Norman and it was very fun. First we piled into their Sidekick - women in the front, men in the back (I love this country! haha) Ana first drove us down the road to the river - this is the road into and out of San Ramon on this side; yes, one road. The river is running very high and muddy from the runoff. It is the ... read more

Geo: 10.0704, -84.5041This morning we woke to a clear sky and birdsong. After a breakfast of bananas, Corn Flakes and coffee we decided to walk around the "sub-division." Most of the road is not paved but is gravel and this area is STEEP. Really, really steep. Before we even get to the end of our drive we are panting hard and sweating. The road goes up and down a lot. We aren't sure where we are going or where we'll end up but we're wearing our hiking boots and we have water bottles so off we go. Ana had mentioned a lake saying it was about 3 kilometers. The subdivion, we discover is a big circle, which isn't obvious because the jungle obscures a lot. We walk for about 45 minutes passing several lovely houses with ... read more

Geo: 10.0704, -84.5041We've awakened to a clear and beautifully blue sky. So pretty! We need to get on the move because in Costa Rica's rainy season (June-December) the rains are usually in the early morning, breaking in the early afternoon, start again in the late afternoon and end in early evening. No, we aren't normally so concerned with the weather, but this trip will be the first time we've rented a car in Costa Rica. The roads here are mostly okay, in the urban areas anyway, but the people drive like maniacs - seriously. Seriously. We need to have breakfast, take the shuttle back to the airport to pick up the rental car and drive back to the hotel to get our stuff and check-out. Today we drive to San Ramon.Fortified with coffee and a very ... read more

In the shadow of the volcano The last stop of our trip was La Fortuna, another town that has a well-founded industry based on ecotourism, but in the case of La Fortuna it's due to the proximity of the Arenal volcano. We traveled from Monteverde by something known locally as Jeep-Boat-Jeep, catching a small coach (rather than a Jeep) down to a jetty on the Arenal lake, then a boat across the lake and another bus to the centre of town. While that may sound complicated, it is a fairly common method of travel and tour operators sell tickets for the journey as a package. Rainy season We knew it was rainy season in Costa Rica, but I didn't expect it to come down so heavily or so often. The locals said that they were experiencing ... read more

Now, today has been all about getting in to Costa Rica - to the volcanic town of La Fortuna in the highlands, set 6km from Volcan Arenal which violently erupted in 1968. This was to involve not one, but 2 flights on a 'small' plane. Jesus - I have jumped out of planes bigger than what I flew in!! Two of the hairiest plane rides I have ever taken, that's for sure! I uncontrollably let out a small squeak when the first plane dropped whilst coming in to land - something which amused those around me considerably as I cling white knuckled to my seat!! But I did manage to make a few friends on these flights, which made them somewhat less stressful. The second flight ended up being just myself and another single female traveller ... read more

Another sunny, warm day in Costa Rica. We had peaceful night’s sleep. Not a peep from the adolescents. I guess they are not a sports team of some sort. The birds started chirping before dawn. No monkey sounds though. I thought I heard thunder but I think it was the first plane of the day taking off from the airport some ten kilometres away. Coffee was served around the pool shortly after six and breakfast started around seven. I was one of the first in so there was lots of everything. Once the kids arrived, the waiters were kept busy refilling jugs and platters. I am sure they ran out of milk. We lazed around the pool until checkout time and then hung around the reception waiting for our taxi. He arrived early, having brought a ... read more

After the excursion at the Poas Volcano Park we arrived at the Waterfall Gardens the last stop of our Combo Tour. This nature park is situated in the middle of a rain forest, and it actually rained while we were walking along the many trails and paths. Earlier our guide had told us in the car that this was going to be a 100% 'nature tour.' It proved to be the highlight of the day's trip. Although this vast 70 acre park boasts a wildlife refuge, to me it was just a small zoo with an aviary, a butterfly observatory, Monkey Pass, hummingbird garden and a serpentarium. We went through all of them except the last one as I have an aversion to snakes! The most interesting, at least for me, was the butterfly observatory which ... read more
