Sunday 1st We arrive at Lima airport around 10.30pm and it takes another hour to clear customs and immigration. Another lot of forms filled in only to be thrown away without even being looked at. I'm getting pretty fed up with the unnecessary forms. We try to find out how to get to our over night hotel the airline are providing but no one knows where we should go ! Eventually we are told to just cross the road and book into the Ramada Hotel. The airline have reserved us a room but without any instructions for us. By now it's 12.30 and we're dead tired and fall into bed. Up at 7.30 and after a quick breakfast it's back to the airport for the flight to San Jose in Costa Rica. We get a shock ... read more

The previous day I took a flight from Washington DC and headed down to San Jose. Once I was in San Jose, I got to meet my Costa Rican friend, Walter, who I had met from Busuu. I did not see much of San Jose as it started to rain, but did see La Sabana Park. I also met and had dinner with my Chief Experience Officer (CEO) and fellow G Adventure trekkers who I will be travelling with for the next 8 days. My first full day was an early start as we headed over to La Fortuna. Once on the bus, I enjoyed looking at Costa Rica’s green and mountain landscape. We first stopped off for some photos of the last waterfall at La Paz. La Paz has many great waterfalls with an animal ... read more

Today I'm on my own again and sadly don't get a lie in. I have to be ready for my tour bus which is picking me up at my hotel at silly o'clock (5.55am!). I find that I'm the first to be picked up and we go on a tour of San Jose's central and outlying hotels picking up a full bus by the time we get to the last one - a huge and very posh looking hotel near the airport. Unfortunately it's raining which doesn't bode well for a good view of Poas volcano, but it's early yet so the weather might change. I get chatting to a few of my fellow passengers. There's one guy from the UK who is going on a 5 days per country trip around all of Central America ... read more

Big hugs from the lovely Alex and we leave Sarapique and head toward's Brian's home town of La Fortuna. He is going to take us to visit his family and his insane mother has offered to cook us all lunch. We are the first tour group he's taking to visit his family so we promise to be on our best behaviour. At a rest stop on the way we get to see iguanas en masse near the appropriately name Iguana Cafe. There's a tree next to the cafe absolutely heaving with iguanas. We see one orange guy and find out this is the colour they change to during their mating season. Eventually we arrive in La Fortuna and visit Brian's family. We meet both brothers, a nephew, mum and dad and 91 year old grandma who ... read more

We are off on our first snowbird type holiday-one month in Costa Rica.Day one was the usual SSI get up early for the ferry gig, then to the airport and wait 4 hours… We got in to Phoenix about 630 PM and shuttled to the fabulous Econolodge-very handy place and excellent value. In the morning, I got three great bird shots with the new camera (Eurasion Collared Dove, Fan Tailled Grackle and a Northern Mockingbird) After the non-gourmet breakfast, it was back to the airport to catch the 1.10 PM US Air flight to San Jose. (5 more fun filled hours) The new air travel scam is to sell you a reasonably priced ticket, then hammer you with luggage fees. We paid about $800 each for the return tickets and then had to pay another $112 ... read more

I started my trip to Central America 2013 in Costa Rica, landed in San Jose and then took a bus to La Fortuna. I stayed there for a few days, went around the Volcan Arenal on a trip with a few really nice girls and we spent the evening in some hot springs. Great and relaxing... The next day I had a hike to Cerro Chato, which was a tough, but great hike. And I visited the hanging bridges at Arenal, seeing some of the unique animals of Costa Rica. Later that day I went to Monteverde to spend a few days there. Visiting the cloud forest and the next day I went to Selvatura Zip lines. Unfortunately it was raining a lot. But I liked it, some hummingbirds vere flying around there. Just amazing creatures. ... read more

Driving in Costa Rica was proving to be a frustrating experience. The distances were short – Costa Rica was about the size of North Georgia – but the travel times were long. We were learning that if Google Maps said it should take two and a half hours that we needed to double it and if a Costa Rican said it should take an hour and a half it would be more like four. The trouble was that the posted speed limits were slow and the roads were uniformly bad. There were some nice paved roads, but even they were clogged with traffic and slowed by frequent towns and even more frequent school zones. There were unmarked speed bumps, absurdly aggressive drivers, potholes the size of small cars – we were driving a small car – ... read more

I am interested in hiking in the Rio Celeste area. I've just heard that you can no longer swim around the waterfall nor soak in the hot spings of this area. Does anyone know more about this and if so, do you know if this rule will be lifted any time soon? If not, do you know of any other places close to soak in the hot springs that isn't too touristy? Thanks!... read more

We had another lovely river journey leaving Tortuguero for about an hour and a half up a narrow river to Pavona where we met our mini bus for the journey to La Fortuna (about 3 hours). We passed some beautiful scenery a combination of jungle, valleys of green fields either with cattle or banana, sugar cane or coffee. The sky was black and moody but we didn´t have too much rain, just enough cloud to cover the volcanoes. La Fortuna is a fairly small town (about 5000 people) close to Volcan Arenal which erupted violently in 1968 killing 88 people. Until this eruption local people living here didn´t know it was a volcano and thought it was a mountain, it was called mount Arenal at the time and had never been scientifically studied. The sides of ... read more

Hola amigos and amigas! Well I made it through my second week and then some in Costa Rica. I’ve noticed, not unexpectedly, that as before it still takes some time to get things done. I’m fortunate however that since coming here in 2005 I learned that if you expect things to happen on your schedule, it’s doubtful it will happen. Finding a car was one of those items. I’m living about five miles outside of town just north of San Ramon and a car, at least for me, is a must. I like the freedom to be able to take off whenever I want, and I need a car to show real estate and tour clients around the Central Valley. This time around I was smarter about my car purchase than I was for the last ... read more
