The birds in Costa Rica are HUGE and COLORFUL and BEAUTEOUS, and at Zoo Ave they walk around and fly outside of their enclosures, making it possible to come right up to them. This was a really fun day trip to do alone, and I basically had the entire park to myself because it was the middle of a weekday. This was the first time in Costa Rica that I saw someone wandering around holding an ENORMOUS MACHETE, but it was definitely not the last. The guy was a zoo worker, probably on his way to chop some leaves down to feed the animals.
