Passin tarkastukseen joutui jonottamaan. Kaaduin kun kävelin taksiin kun en huomannut korkeuseroa. Sormiin tuli naarmuja. Taksilla hotelliin Alajuelassa. Ostin kaupasta vielä vettä ja banaaneja. Nukkumaan 24 tunnin valvomisen jälkeen. Sekä taksikuski että hotellin pitäjä kehuivat espanjan taitoani.... read more

I'm being bitten..........I stumble on through the jungle for a few stinging yards before daring to look down.........my tender English lily-white legs and indeed arms are a succulent and easy target for a herd of killer jungle gnats! I turn into a human pin cushion as they feast gleefully on the inside of my arms and calves.......little droplets of blood appear within seconds as I madly squish the little black critters........will I survive this tropical trauma? I "squeak" to Cathy that I have been attacked........and immediately "about turn" and head back about 200m up the marshy jungle path and past the sloth perched high in a palm tree (the reason for our ... read more

Our last big adventure – horseback riding! At the stables, just feet from my room, we watched apprehensively as the wrangler, or “savañero” (man of the savannah or cowboy), saddled the horses. In turn, he boosted each of us up. My horse was called Tico, the affectionate nickname for a Costa Rican. At first I was quite happy that he wanted to follow the leader, Ollie’s horse, Thunderstruck. Over time I discovered that he would do almost anything to keep up to him! Although we were nervous, the horses were not. They set off in their usual direction, alternating walking and trotting. Every time Tico trotted, I worried he would speed up more, but he “had no gas” and would soon return to walking. Except to go right or left, he ignored what I wanted. Once ... read more

Our brave day! At 8:00 we piled into the vehicle and drove to into the park to go zip lining. None of us had ever done it before, and we suffered from varying degrees of fear. The family-owned business and facilities were obviously very professional. Everything we had except our shirts, long pants, and shoes went into the lockers, including (sob!) my camera. The guides put on our helmets and tightened them appropriately. We stepped into the waist and legs harness, and they tightened the straps. We were given thick leather gloves and a contraption that would join us to the zip line. Everything was numbered, and the helmets had a bar code to identify us. We waited a short while for more customers to come, then we received operating instructions, demonstrated on a short cable ... read more

(3:15 p.m.) In front of me is a perfect view of the Arenal Volcano. I keep taking pictures as the sun and cloud formations change. Ollie told us that there are two volcanic chimneys, and one vents steam, creating the fascinating changing views of the mountain top. My room is about the size of a standard room, but it is a free-standing cabin, as are all the rooms. The balcony facing the Volcano is enticing me to enjoy tea there. This morning needed a quick start - and I woke late! I heard the alarm from the room next door, and wondered why Judy was getting up so early. Nodding off, some part of my brain wondered why my alarm hadn’t gone off? Not on! Thanks to “Costa Rican time”, there was still the opportunity to ... read more

It was my zip-lining day in Arenal. “Another zip-lining blog? Haven’t you already written three?” My wife was visibly fed up. But she was so right! “Well, I promise, this will be the last one,” - I told her. The only reason I am writing this because I want to share the spectacular view of the mountain and the lake Arenal, when I was zipping high over the forest. I tell you, the view was just out of this world. If your trip takes you to Arenal and if you like zip-lining, I strongly suggest, DON’T MISS IT. You would love every second of it! So, true to my promise, it will be a short blog. But I invite you to watch the short video clip using my sun-glass video. Enjoy the quick view; then you ... read more

The bus rolled along the winding road from the Trapp family Lodge and took a right turn to the main road at the junction. I am traveling to my next destination Arenal. These were the two good days I spent in Monteverde. Zip lines were awesome. No, we won’t discuss zip line today. We talked all about zip lining in the last two blogs. Let’s change the topic here. I would like to tell you the story about a Costa Rican family who took me close to their heart and made me feel home. On the way to Arenal We changed the bus outside Monteverde. Then we took the main Highway No. 606 through the rolling hills of Alajuela. A green carpet of nature is spread across the silent hills and pastures all around us. It ... read more
