We awoke early this morning to the good old sound of ... roosters!! While enjoying a great cup of coffee at the hotel we were mesmerized by the plethora of different bird species at our hotel alone. Our biologist friend, Mark, would have lost his mind at the multitude of birds we saw in a very short period of time. According to the hotel owner this hotel was part of a birding tour so we can expect to see many different ones during our time here. We decided that today was our day to just explore La Fortuna in the daylight to see just what there was to see. We first stopped at a great little panaderia called "Duran" which was recommended in one of our travel books. We each enjoyed a warm pastry for breakfast. ... read more

On our last full day in Montezuma, we hopped on the bus and headed for town to pick up those last minute souvenirs. We went to Organico for a smoothie since most of the stores were just beginning to open. We wandered in and out of shops where I picked up yet another dress and Curtis a couple more shirts! We also bought a very fresh baguette as we were having dinner later with our neighbours. As we got to the bus stop people had started to gather under the tree. Several were looking above and then we noticed that there were a couple of large iguanas up in the tree. Suddenly, one jumped up a branch and the two started to fight. Someone said it was for ownership of the tree. Not sure why they ... read more

Friday 13th Up early again as today's a travel day. First we catch a direct bus to San Jose and it takes just over 3 hours. We pass beautiful countryside on the way. On arrival we get a taxi back to the airport and catch the Budget rental shuttle out to their depot to collect the hire car we've booked. Surprise surprise on picking it up to be told that the hire cost doesn't include any insurance at all. Not even basic cover like all other countries rental agencies. We get charged further 150 GB pounds ! I then get asked if I want to upgrade to a 4 x 4 for an extra $5 a day and when I say no thanks, we get given one as they don't have our car anyway. Finally we ... read more

The previous day I took a flight from Washington DC and headed down to San Jose. Once I was in San Jose, I got to meet my Costa Rican friend, Walter, who I had met from Busuu. I did not see much of San Jose as it started to rain, but did see La Sabana Park. I also met and had dinner with my Chief Experience Officer (CEO) and fellow G Adventure trekkers who I will be travelling with for the next 8 days. My first full day was an early start as we headed over to La Fortuna. Once on the bus, I enjoyed looking at Costa Rica’s green and mountain landscape. We first stopped off for some photos of the last waterfall at La Paz. La Paz has many great waterfalls with an animal ... read more

Big hugs from the lovely Alex and we leave Sarapique and head toward's Brian's home town of La Fortuna. He is going to take us to visit his family and his insane mother has offered to cook us all lunch. We are the first tour group he's taking to visit his family so we promise to be on our best behaviour. At a rest stop on the way we get to see iguanas en masse near the appropriately name Iguana Cafe. There's a tree next to the cafe absolutely heaving with iguanas. We see one orange guy and find out this is the colour they change to during their mating season. Eventually we arrive in La Fortuna and visit Brian's family. We meet both brothers, a nephew, mum and dad and 91 year old grandma who ... read more

I started my trip to Central America 2013 in Costa Rica, landed in San Jose and then took a bus to La Fortuna. I stayed there for a few days, went around the Volcan Arenal on a trip with a few really nice girls and we spent the evening in some hot springs. Great and relaxing... The next day I had a hike to Cerro Chato, which was a tough, but great hike. And I visited the hanging bridges at Arenal, seeing some of the unique animals of Costa Rica. Later that day I went to Monteverde to spend a few days there. Visiting the cloud forest and the next day I went to Selvatura Zip lines. Unfortunately it was raining a lot. But I liked it, some hummingbirds vere flying around there. Just amazing creatures. ... read more

We had another lovely river journey leaving Tortuguero for about an hour and a half up a narrow river to Pavona where we met our mini bus for the journey to La Fortuna (about 3 hours). We passed some beautiful scenery a combination of jungle, valleys of green fields either with cattle or banana, sugar cane or coffee. The sky was black and moody but we didn´t have too much rain, just enough cloud to cover the volcanoes. La Fortuna is a fairly small town (about 5000 people) close to Volcan Arenal which erupted violently in 1968 killing 88 people. Until this eruption local people living here didn´t know it was a volcano and thought it was a mountain, it was called mount Arenal at the time and had never been scientifically studied. The sides of ... read more

For the remainder of my time in Central America, I booked a tour through G Adventures called “Backroads of Central America”. Over 17 days, the tour takes myself and 15 other young people (18-40) north through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala. It’s essentially backpacking but more organized – we stay in very basic accommodations – and it is definitely marketed as an adventurous trip. I have never officially done anything like this, although my weeklong South Africa safari week was similar. I had such a blast on that trip that I decide to give this type of traveling a go. There were a few things that I was worried about for this trip (e.g., losing my bags upon arrival, arriving in Costa Rica to discover that the whole program was a scam, not ... read more

My plan was to write this entry before I left for the turtle place. After I was packed and ready to go to the bus, I sorted through my pictures and started writing. As soon as my fingers hit the keys, my ride arrived (over 30 minutes early!). So, now I am writing it from my bunk at Playa Cameronal. I have no idea when I am going to be able to post this, and I’m actually feeling a little overwhelmed (in a good way). But, I definitely don’t want to forget what happens on this trip, and the blog has been a good way to sort out my thoughts. So, here we go. After my week at the language school, I was definitely ready to go out and see some of Costa Rica. Fortunately, an ... read more

I was awake relatively early this morning as our hotel is right on a busy street and given we don't have air-con, the windows are open to let at least some cooler air in. After catching up on blogs, we went out for breakfast at the My Coffee cafe (same place we enjoyed an arvo coffee from yesterday). After tentatively ordering pancakes, Rach changed her mind when she saw the dessert menu...berry crepes (with ice-cream I might add!). I chose an omelet and was happy when it was brought out with fresh fruit and muffins too! So we broke our fast ensuring that we were well fed ahead of our massive adrenaline-rushing excursion. We were picked up at 10am and taken to our waiting 4WDs. We scrambled onto the back of the trays where they had ... read more
