This is a picture of one of the few gin houses still standing in Acklins. Gin houses are stone buildings that were constructed on high elevations of land across Acklins during the 1800's. Fires were lit inside the gin houses and smoke was use as a method of communicate for the Ackliners during this period of time. This form of communication was used to warn Ackliners in other settlements that the British Navy ships were patrolling the waters. For many years after emancipation, the British Navy would capture Black British men on Acklins and other Family Islands and force them to serve in the British Navy.
