Gin House in Anderson Hill, Acklins

This is a picture of one of the few gin houses still standing in Acklins. Gin houses are stone buildings that were constructed on high elevations of land across Acklins during the 1800's. Fires were lit inside the gin houses and smoke was use as a method of communicate for the Ackliners during this period of time. My Profile I have traveled to the Bahamas numerous times. As a child living in Florida, my dad would “ship” me off to the Bahamas to spend the summer months and Christmas breaks with my paternal grandmother in New Providence (Nassau). Every summer, my grandmother would gather up me and my cousins and we would take the mailboat to Acklins...our homeland for the summer. As an adult, I travel to the Bahamas at least twice a year.
