After eating our own breakfasts in our rooms, we headed out for the Arikok National Park. Of course, on the way we saw the crazy airplane parked in someone’s backyard – in the center of the island. Supposed to eventually be a restaurant? It’s about 50’ off the ground, accessible by an open staircase. We managed to avoid scraping the bottom of the car on all those crazy draining ditches across the road. The blues and turquoises were magnificent against the beige of the sand and the white of the surf. We hiked down to the Boca Prins waters. Actually there was significantly less surf still on this wild side of the island. We went into the further cave first – the “clean cave,” so called because there are 2 types of bats living in the ... read more

We were all up and at ‘em to go snorkeling early again – would the sea lice be the issue again? NO, it was the abrupt change in wind direction and speed. There are white caps on the ocean at Eagle Beach and all up the usually leeward side of the island! So, it was off to Linda’s for Dutch Pancakes rather earlier than we’d planned. Mary Jane was there and liked her little gift of maple syrup. And the pancakes were delicious – we split the brie, walnut, and honey, Tom had the same, and Amy a gluten-free banana and honey. With the nice wind we thought it would be a good time of day to visit the Alta Vista chapel, built originally in the mid 1500s. We were inside the cozy contemplative chapel with ... read more

It’s Sunday the 18th, but yesterday was a travel day – long and tiring but happily all according to plan. As many of you know, this is the time for friends from church, Tom & Amy Fadeley, to finally come with us! They had won the bid for this event at the fundraiser for our church almost 3 years ago. We are here at last. We left home at 3:15 am for the American Airlines flight at 6:13. Tom and Amy had arrived even earlier for their flight to Newark. We went to Miami, where we had a very very long walk and barely time to stop in the bathroom and buy one very expensive Caesar Salad to add to our brought-from-home Peanut butter/banana muffins. We arrived perhaps 30 mins before Tom & Amy so David ... read more

A word of warning; if you are in Aruba, don’t eat Rice Krispies on you balcony. Anyone who has visited knows that the trade winds never cease. What you might not know is that they can blow your cereal right out of the bowl. Next time I’m here i will order something heavy. The sun is shining and I put on sun screen. Yet it feels so good that I sit out all morning. Not planning to go ashore and not interested in the activities being offered so I bond with my IPad We just lost power but only for a minute. Curious! Just had a very disjointed announcement about a power failure that effected most of the ship. Very curious! All appears to be resolved. I’m sitting on the balcony after dinner and I hear ... read more

We are sad to say goodbye to the lovely people, birds, fish, colors, and weather of Aruba. One last time to visit the Spanish Lagoon and say goodbye to the humming birds and Mr. Shoco. Actually we added a total of 9 birds to our life list this time. Our flight has been delayed almost 2 hours. Maybe nno crabcakes in B'mo after all. We'll see. Here are our final photos. David is still not completely happy with the hummers - when they light catches them they are so full of yellows, reds, and greens. Pre-op tomorrow at 9. All go go go.... read more

Our last this and that ☹ As all good things come to an end (all bad things do too, of course!) We said goodbye to our Turtles on the N.W. side of the island. We were the first car there, followed by 2 other middle-aged women we chatted to afterwards (I think they were a little concerned for us because we had stayed out there so long!). The visibility was not as good as before the storm, but we spotted 6 turtles. The challenge was that normally we can swim about 20’ apart, and see a good 12’ feet right and left. But today we could only see virtually what was under or in front of our vision. The MOST super find was a FAMILY of flying gurnards - the little one was only about 3” ... read more

We started Sunday with birding at the Spanish Lagoon. It’s easy to get up early because our hostess likes us to keep the outdoor lights on – so the light comes in the windows a bit. Of course we said hello to the burrowing owls, and then stood watch at the flowering cactus to try to catch better photos of the hummingbirds. Then it was off to worship with Ronald from The Kitchen, at the Centro Familiar Hosannah church. We got there in plenty of time, not knowing exactly where it was in the city of Orangestad, or where to park, etc. The entrance area was packed with people having coffee and pastries and even scrambled eggs. Hmmm? And canned praise music was already going – so it was a challenge to understand our Spanish-speaking friends ... read more

It was pouring cats and dogs by 5:45 am, a lovely sound on the tin roof - so no birding or snorkeling this morning. Having our ready-to-go-home Covid test seemed the only alternative. The clinic was up near La Cabana, open from 7 am to 10 pm, and had been packed the other day. But at 8:15 on a rainy Saturday we were the only people there! It was both a throat and nasal test by a nurse, and I count it a real miracle that I didn’t panic – I just warned the nurse that I gag easily and then prayed to relax. And God answered that prayer – the swab wasn’t actually on the tongue but on the side. Phew. The results were guaranteed within 20 hours but we got results around 1 pm. ... read more

A very eventful day, even though we didn’t get in the ocean!! What happened?! Well, first thing we went birding at the nearby Spanish Lagoon, and met Armando, who happens to be a professional birder and artist. After looking at the pair of owls, he offered to show us where the humming birds would be. We told him about seeing the info-mercial when we were at La Cabana about birding here, and he admitted he was the guide featured! How fun. Evidently, at the base of the old Gold Mine, up hill from the owls, are cacti in bloom attracting both the Ruby-topaz and Blue-tailed emerald humming birds. David did well but wants to return earlier tomorrow to catch the best light. It was a very lucky meeting because also Armando told us where to find ... read more

Our day started with a visit to the Spanish Lagoon to visit the burrowing owl – both of them this time! We noticed that one of them at least has been banded. David also got much better photos of the Ruby Topaz humming bird, but still not up to his usual snuff, so no doubt we’ll be back again! There were MANY of these humming birds in the bushy walking area there, whizzing by in 2’s and 4’s. Make sure you note the wonderful photo of the trupial in flight. After returning the big camera to the AirBnB, we turned around and did another drift snorkel at Mangel Halto. It was exciting to see another Ocean Trigger fish – they are so graceful. No eels though. We visited a “famous” Trinidadian restaurant for goat curry and ... read more
