We were all up and at ‘em to go snorkeling early again – would the sea lice be the issue again? NO, it was the abrupt change in wind direction and speed. There are white caps on the ocean at Eagle Beach and all up the usually leeward side of the island! So, it was off to Linda’s for Dutch Pancakes rather earlier than we’d planned. Mary Jane was there and liked her little gift of maple syrup. And the pancakes were delicious – we split the brie, walnut, and honey, Tom had the same, and Amy a gluten-free banana and honey.
With the nice wind we thought it would be a good time of day to visit the Alta Vista chapel, built originally in the mid 1500s. We were inside the cozy contemplative chapel with perhaps 3 other people praying, when a gaggle of rude guys were very loud just outside the open front door. I got up to ask them to pls be quiet, but a ranger or security guy said it first. I thanked him and went back inside. When we came out – there was no such man in sight. A miracle? We did see a
peregrine falcon though.
Then we walked the prayer labyrinth and I got some good ideas for the encountered couples’ retreat in March, with its focus of “peace.”
Off to downtown Oranjestad to the Aruban coffee tasting place. Bit disappointing for people who don’t drink their coffee black, as the tasting samples were unadorned. We walked into the town from there as the parking was easy – bit of a ways but interesting. We found out where the tram was running, which was just finished about 3-4 years ago to come from the cruise ship terminal, and not all the stores were up and running, even though that tram line must make them in a very desirable place – still covid result? We walked across to the marina to see the big iguanas in the rocks (well, two), and the fancy sailing boats. One was registered in Puerto Rico – where Hurricane Fiona just hit so badly, which is also causing the heat wave here. The pelicans were having a great time dive-bombing the schools of tiny fish in the little harbor.
We nibbled on young edam cheese and salami and carrots on the way home to prepare
Tom and Amy for their rum-tasting event at 3. We will see how that goes.
It was evidently very good – over 30 types of rums, all blended at this local company: pistachio? Vanilla. Quite a variety. The Fadeleys also just received a bottle of champagne to celebrate their big 35!!! When we checked in, David told the front desk they needed to do something, and evidently they agreed.
After the rum tasting we had some fascinating conversation with Karen, retired from NYPD, who’s been coming here since 1990, owning at La Cabana. And here we thought 16 times was a lot. The other thing is, I don’t think they do any snorkeling either. And this time they stay for a month. But we got some recommendations for restaurants and no doubt will see her and her husband, also ex-PD Billy, at the pool whenever we go there.
We enjoyed the hamburgers at the “Local Store” for dinner. Do the Feltons and Megan remember that place?
