Off to Tres Trapi, the turtle area, and darn if Hungry Turtle wasn’t there, as usual, in the tender turtle grass just maybe 60’ at the most from the steps where you enter. But this time he also brought his two cousins. We also saw a Southern Stingray (which only Tom saw before) and got a photo of a single white mullet – not a very interesting fish, but one we needed a photo for. We didn’t see much else, so we headed out further and – yep – we got the pika pika bites again. Interesting how something that is in effect sediment in the ocean can stay in more or less the same place, thru storms and currents. It actually rained on us, and there was a lovely double-rainbow in the sky. Back home ... read more

Sadly, today is the day to deliver Tom and Amy to Queen Beatrix airport for their long journey home. It is recommended that one arrives 3 hours in advance. We have usually not gone so early, but, then again, we have the special traveler id and can bypass the long immigration line. It is a long process, as one goes through security twice, then deliver checked bags to the conveyor belt, then clear US customs and immigration here, then wait in the departure lounges. There are restaurants at that end too, although we try to eat our last lunch in the waiting area before US C&I so we can eat our final cheese and tomato sandwiches and fruit, etc. So, now that I’m writing at 8 pm, I can say that THANK GOODNESS we dropped them ... read more

Yes, it sure rained last night, judging from the huge and deep puddles, and was still doing so this am. So we got to poke around the room in the early hours – including doing some much-needed laundry (there are laundry rooms on every other floor of the building). The locals made it sound like today would be dreadful, but it cleared off and, while the winds were still up and coming from the “wrong” direction, it has been a lovely day. We checked out our Tres Trapi place (where we saw Hungry Boy turtle) and the waves were crashing over the rocks! We then stood and watched the kite surfers and wind surfers enjoying the winds at Hadicuri. Then we visited the Holiday Inn, where Tom and Amy had stayed about 30 years ago when ... read more

We seemed to have avoided the rains all day. Will we be so lucky tomorrow? At 8:30 or so we found the water at Tres Trapi to be excellent, AT LAST! and within 50’ of the entrance was HUNGRY TURTLE! He was chowing down on the delicate/tender turtle grass, and was not phased by us at all. We went off looking for more, and when we returned he was still there! So, we fulfilled our promise to show Tom and Amy turtles (well, one). AND we found a flying gurnard as we were coming back in – pale in the deeper water, and it didn’t stick around long enough to take a photo – so here is one from previous times just to remind some of you what it looks like. Also a cow fish, a ... read more

8:30 am and we are off and at’em, with a quick trip to the Huchada Bakery to get a frappochino each to go. But it turned into NOT such a quick trip. Yes, it’s always been busy – with maybe 4 people in front of us, but this was PACKED. Was David telling people about them too? Anyway, frapps in hand, we drove to Baby Beach, but not on Big Mama’s side, but on the n.e. side, near the padi dive shop. We had been recommended to try it for turtles. There were lovely sea oat trees for shade, and a sandy entrance. We did not see any turtles though, although conditions were lovely and calm and warm and not very deep. Then a huge black cloud finally drew near so 3 of us got out ... read more

After eating our own breakfasts in our rooms, we headed out for the Arikok National Park. Of course, on the way we saw the crazy airplane parked in someone’s backyard – in the center of the island. Supposed to eventually be a restaurant? It’s about 50’ off the ground, accessible by an open staircase. We managed to avoid scraping the bottom of the car on all those crazy draining ditches across the road. The blues and turquoises were magnificent against the beige of the sand and the white of the surf. We hiked down to the Boca Prins waters. Actually there was significantly less surf still on this wild side of the island. We went into the further cave first – the “clean cave,” so called because there are 2 types of bats living in the ... read more

We were all up and at ‘em to go snorkeling early again – would the sea lice be the issue again? NO, it was the abrupt change in wind direction and speed. There are white caps on the ocean at Eagle Beach and all up the usually leeward side of the island! So, it was off to Linda’s for Dutch Pancakes rather earlier than we’d planned. Mary Jane was there and liked her little gift of maple syrup. And the pancakes were delicious – we split the brie, walnut, and honey, Tom had the same, and Amy a gluten-free banana and honey. With the nice wind we thought it would be a good time of day to visit the Alta Vista chapel, built originally in the mid 1500s. We were inside the cozy contemplative chapel with ... read more

It’s Sunday the 18th, but yesterday was a travel day – long and tiring but happily all according to plan. As many of you know, this is the time for friends from church, Tom & Amy Fadeley, to finally come with us! They had won the bid for this event at the fundraiser for our church almost 3 years ago. We are here at last. We left home at 3:15 am for the American Airlines flight at 6:13. Tom and Amy had arrived even earlier for their flight to Newark. We went to Miami, where we had a very very long walk and barely time to stop in the bathroom and buy one very expensive Caesar Salad to add to our brought-from-home Peanut butter/banana muffins. We arrived perhaps 30 mins before Tom & Amy so David ... read more

One week in Aruba and it was a very interesting day. First – off to hunt turtles off the “3 Steps” place and was rewarded with 12! Plus David saw an ENORMOUS fish that really stumped us, until we figured out it was the biggest “sharksucker” we had ever seen!! We’ve seen other Remora stuck on smaller fish, on turtles, even trying to attach to my leg, but this was near 4’ long!! We also saw a Booby flying overhead while we were in the water. Second – we wanted to have the buffet lunch at The Kitchen in Orangestad so after showering etc we went there. Had an amazing conversation with server Ronald from Venezuela -- in Spanish mostly. He asked if we were Christians, and shared with us his miracle of being welcomed into ... read more

Another lovely day, less cloudy perhaps than some others, and more windy. High 80s? But our car said 96. We did not try for an early morning turtle safari, and arrived at Arashi (the most northern beach) around 9:15. The current was strong so I didn’t go out any further than the elkhorn corals. Now that the white buoy has been added, it helps us know which way to aim, at least. Uh oh – there’s a turtle! So off goes Aquaman, leaving me behind. I just hung around the corals, occasionally looking up to see that David had gone all the way to the buoy. He admitted it was a good swim back to me but his video is magnificent – that turtle was one laid back dude. After showering, we were off to try ... read more
