Thursday already!? We tried the Tres Tapis (3 steps) entry to hunt for turtles today, and we can see why this is gaining in popularity since they installed a few palapas and signage – the swim out to the seagrass is not as far as from the entrance at Boca Catalina. We were out there with about 6 other people at 8 am and found 6 turtles before coming into the shallower water and cruising around the sandy areas. We were lucky to see yet another flying gurnard (we’ve called them Bandtailed sea robins too, but think the flying gurnard might be more accurate). Also proof that these sweet little trunkfish are carnivores – nibbling on all sorts of fish heads and skeletons (fisherman tossing back the heads?) Having skipped breakfast for our early start, we ... read more

Every other day we try to do a morning swim with the turtles. Having heard a tip about getting in slightly not as far as Boca Catalina at “Three Steps,” we got into the water by 8:15 again, finding the turtle grass closer in than our usual entrance. Saw 8 turtles, mostly big ones. But even more fun was (sorry, Robin) TWO band-tailed searobins digging into the sand in search of breakfast. We saw our first squadron of squid, and they were no more than 1” long – like tiny bandaids swimming through the vast ocean. After 1-3/4 hours we treated ourselves to another Dutch pancake – this time with gouda, apple slices and walnuts, split. Our friendly waitresses greeted us warmly. No time to stop home, we wanted to find the elusive Barcadero Beach, where ... read more

Monday already? Time to hit the ocean to see turtles before the Jolly Roger type boats arrive. When we arrived at Boca Catalina at 8:15, there was just one local bouncing gently in the sandy entrance – Edwin – we recognized him for many visits and chatted briefly. Just 3 turtles this time before we headed into shallower waters. We spent another 1.5 hours in watery bliss meeting old friends and taking photos for you. Still hunting for the elusive octopus but found 2 more eels, which are always fun, and a lovely large Blue-spotted Cornetfish. David spied a peacock flounder scooting across the bottom, adapting his colors accordingly. After downloading lots of snorkeling suggestions to a family from New York, we headed off to Linda’s for the absolutely best Dutch pancakes and made pigs of ... read more

Good Sunday After refreshing sleep, we were up at 7 and had no problem getting to church by 9:45 – except that when we got there the doors were locked ☹ Still just meeting virtually? The only good thing was that we were able to practice our Spanish with a security guard. So we quickly returned to the hotel for a quick change into swim suits and light lunch and went snorkeling at Arashi – the beach furthest up the northwestern coast, near the California Lighthouse. There is now a buoy marking the reef, a great improvement over trying to guess. It’s a fairly long swim out, though, and we found many lovely fish and corals to look at before there, plus I was detecting a current that I didn’t fancy fighting to come back, so ... read more

Well, we are here! Up at 3 am Saturday of course but it was amazingly clear sailing all the way: from making every green light in Streetsboro to sailing thru the convoluted paperwork for Covid testing – it turned out that all those papers we printed out – just in case – all ended up only needing the big green check mark. Some people just showed it on their phones. The flights were fine, and we spoiled ourselves by splitting a crab omelette at OBrycki’s at the airport in B’mo. We were sitting on the wrong side of the plane to take photos of Aruba as we arrived, but we could see the water was just as miraculously blue and turquoise as ever We got our Carvenience car just fine, and ended up here at La ... read more

Aruba We have been coming to Aruba on an infrequent basis for the past 24 years. In another lifetime we purchased timeshare here and that has afforded us the opportunity to visit this island about 10 times as well as many of the other islands of the Caribbean over that time period through ‘swapping’. Each time we come to Aruba we arrive having taken a firm decision that this will be our last visit and we will sell the timeshare, and then during the holiday we gradually change our minds and decide it might be worth holding onto it a little while longer. Aruba promotes itself as ‘One Happy Island’. It is one of the three islands that comprise the Dutch Antilles, along with Bonaire and Curacao, and is located just off the north coast of ... read more

Travels with John Steinbeck Probably the ‘best’ book Joan and I read on our recent 6-week voyage from Los Angeles to Miami was Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck. This nonfiction book was originally published in 1962. Steinbeck was disenchanted with the rampant consumerism and blatant selfishness that was destroying communities throughout the country. He was disillusioned by the rush to buy and have more and more ‘things’! The book is a beautifully written travelogue of the road trip in 1960 in which Steinbeck set out with his French Poodle called Charley in a homemade recreational vehicle that he named Rocinante after Don Quixote’s horse, to rediscover America. He commenced his travel from Sag Harbor, New York, driving north through the smaller New England states and spent some considerable time in Maine, ... read more

Penny - Ok, so we're addicted to paradise. Who wouldn't be? Especially with a wealth of Caribbean islands existing just a stones throw away from our snowy adopted home city. Aruba is a desert island off the coast of Venezuela. (We could actually see South America from its edge)! It's covered with Road Runner cartoon-style cacti, overrun with lucid green iguanas and surrounded by ocean so creamy blue it's like taking a dip in a Blue Heaven milkshake. Dave's been making the most of his first sleep-ins since mid 2009. (He quit his pub job last week and has one more Boxing Day party before he's free to run amuck in NYC). Until then we're whiling the days away as resort squatters. We've secured the right color beach towels & sussed our favorite private slice of ... read more
