Reached July 2nd my first destination Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. Changed trains in Antwerpen to Paris Nord and after a Metro direction Place Italy took at Austerlitz the nighttrain to Madrid of 19.47 . Reached Madrid Chambertin at 9.25 instead of 9.05 what gave some tension to reach my next connection at Puerto Atocha station that was planned to leave at 10.05. Arrived Puerto Atocha at 9.55 found my way to luggage control, found my way to checking in and reached the train with a bit running, just imagine, at 10.04. We left due to technical problems 40 minutes later. The weather on the trip to Jerez was sunny in the Netherlands, Belgium and rance untill Paris and after that very cloudy and some times raining untill a few km from Jerez wher the ... read more

Last Year I travelled by train from Faro in Portugal to Singapore This year it will be quite a different trip, more seeing of Europe and ending in Damascus the capital of Syria. On my way I ll visit also Aleppo one of the oldest cities in the world. If there is time enough I ll continue after Syria to Jordan for Amman and Petra. The route will be roughly, one way, 10.000 km mainly by train but there will be also some parts by coach and vessel.... read more

After 54 days travelling back home again. Getting used to normal life. This kind of trip has been made by people you meet. I remember still a lot of people I did not write about in the blog : - Like the dutch businessman in Thailand I met , living in Changmai, coming 15 years ago for 3 months to Thailand and stayed. Has a wholesale organisation for restaurants in the North of Thailand. Helped a dutch company out 12 years ago who thought to be able to change lifestyle in Thailand. Thais eat outside and hardly at home. This company wanted to change that. Built chickenfarms and processing factories for easy to prepare food for in house. It failed. But they were selling a lot to the dutch wholesaler, who exported the products to...... the ... read more

My trip to Singapore took over 500 hours train. Back a bit shorter. 2 hours SP/ BK and 11,5 hours BK/Amsterdam. Last night I boarded the flight CI065 and because I still had still some points to spent I flew decadently , compared to all the simple trains, in the businessclass. A bit confusing, too fast , too luxurious. Plane was not full as is usual these days. Businessclass not even half full incl 2 english guys, about 50 years old, rather drunk from the free cognacs in the China airlines lounge and one of them almost 100% tatooed. He showed it in the plane by sitting not only in shorts but also by sitting without his T shirt. An asian crew don t know how to handle this kind of bad behavior. So he fell ... read more

To celibrate the birth of my grandson I had a beer last night after the flight from Singapore. Do you sleep alone tonight is the question mostly asked between 1 and 2 o clock in the morning by the ladies in the bars. I was talking with Ann in Check Inn 99 at Sukumvit. Around 1.45 she asked me. I told her Yes Ann I m sleeping alone. Why? She asked me. I like to sleep with you. No Ann I ll keep you awake by snoring. I ve a terrible snore. Everything start moving by that noice. I love snoring Ann told me No Ann really my snoring is terrible to hear. Perhaps we can do something else ? Ann asked. Ann what are you suggesting in bed you have to sleep or do you ... read more

I write this entry in Bangkok for I have been too short in Singapore to find a computer. Due to the fact that I became this day, June 12th , grandfather again I ll go home a bit earlier than planned. It s a grandson and like the father, my youngest son not so serious in planning for he entered this world about 5 weeks too early. Probably wondering how it is around here. So I had to change my schedule. Went to Butterworth station at 5.30 in the morning to change my train tickets what took about 45 minutes. It s all possible in Malaysia but not done probably very often for the guy at the shelter had to call his boss who was still sleeping how he had to do this in their computer ... read more

Entering Malaysia from the Thai side it looks a bit different. A bit more organized. All the way to Kuala Lumpur green surroundings, lots of ricefields rather well kept, lots of Palms and really lots. These palms are used for Palm oil. They are building up the railway to doubletrack what probably will still gives a few years work to many people. Approaching KL there are quite a few new stations and they look like a serial of exactly the same built. In the trains they use a lot of airco and I found out that first class is even colder than 2nd class and it s not uncomman that people who are used to 30 degrees plus all over the year wear their coat inside the train. All the way you see left or right ... read more

In Georgetown I found a street with all butchers. One had as speciallity Goatsheads but not on display. The other butchers had pigs hanging in the frontdoors. Just without any cooling. Wonder who is eating them for it s not a delicacy for Moslims or Budhists and I can hardly believe it s for the Roman Catholics for than they have to eat a lot. This system with all shops of one kind of business all together in one street is common here. There is also a street with jewelers. Georgetown is another Unesco world heritage site and the last I visit on this trip. Georgetown on Penang is rather big, 600.000 inhabitants and even the Unesco site in the old city is approx 4 or5 km2 with complete streets in old style european tradinghouses. The ... read more

Have been walking around Georgetown today. Had just a tour and explanation around the biggest local mosque. One of the muslims saw me wondering if I could take pictures or not and he invited me on a tour. His father just had died , 40 days ago, and he had cooked all afternoon for a meal for several hundred of people who came to the mosque later. Its great how good the Malaysian speak english. The older often even better than the younger for in the past I think untill the 60th english was language nr 1 and since than nr 2. The main religion here in this part of Malaysia seems to be Muslim. But there are also Budhists and Roman Catholics with even a cathedral. Lately I ve some disturbing dreams about ice cold ... read more
