We had another delicious breakfast with our hosts, Brita and Heinz and met two more guests at breakfast. They were Yana from the Czech republic and Jay from China. They were spending four days at Allegra House. We, unfortunately, had to say our goodbyes as we loaded up the car. Caroline was going to drive. She was just about to drive off when Don realised he had forgotten his bag - the one with his passports etc etc. Finally we got away and decided to drive to the town of Russell. Russell was formerly the capital of the area. It had a dreadful reputation as a bawdy town thanks to the sailors putting into port and getting into drunken brawls along with escaped and former convicts behaving like convicts. We went over on the car ferry ... read more

Poor Don was quite poorly during the night. He spent half of the night with his head either down the toilet or over the sink. No further information needed. After another delicious breakfast for Lesley, Caroline and Gwenlli. the rain had stopped enough to brave the elements. The girls wanted a walk, Don wanted to keep close to a loo and I wanted to stay dry. So we decided to visit Waitangi Treaty Grounds. In 1840 a treaty was signed between the British and the Maoris. The British government representative was James Busby who drew up the treaty which was translated into Maori. The British consul who signed the treaty on behalf of the government was captain William Hobson. There were days of discussion until on 6 February 1840, with much pomp and splendour the treaty ... read more

Oh what a dreadful day we woke up to. It just rained and rained and we had wonderful thunder storms. So the four of us stayed in. We had our tasty Shabbat lunch and played Rumikub and Bananagrams. It was a relaxing shabbat and lovely to be together. Allegra House is very comfortable and the Martis have a very nice lounge which can be used by their guests. It even has a piano which Gwenlli was very happy to practice on. In the evening Caroline came with us for a short drive to forage for food. (SCROLL DOWN to see pic of Brita & Heinz if it inexplicably leaves this frame.)... read more

We were greeted by our host Heinz in his kitchen with freshly ground coffee, cereals, yoghurt, fresh fruit and eggs to order. He was meticulous in ensuring that everything was strictly vegetarian with many vegan foodstuffs accommodating Caroline. There were only the four of us for breakfast and we sat chatting to him for quite a long time. He suggested that the weather might turn and whilst the sun was shining we should take a boat ride out to the Hole in the Rock. Being very involved with the tourist industry here, Heinz booked our tickets with a discount. The sun was shining as we walked down to the wharf. Don realised that it would be his brother Mike's wedding anniversary when we returned home so we bought a card and wrote it out and then ... read more

We were up in time to take out the wet washing from the dryer, turn up the heating and place the washing strategically round the room on every spare chair space. Then down to breakfast. If you think this is exciting - it gets better. After breakfast we packed our suitcases and took enough clothes with us in our roll ons for the weekend ahead. We were having a break with Caroline and Gwenlli at Paihia for four nights. Then the exciting bit - the shopping! Not just any shopping but the food shopping. So it was off to Grey's Ave (kosher) Deli to pick up challah and wine and other goodies. Whilst we were there we met the rabbi; we are having dinner with him and his family next Shabbat. We found out that he ... read more

Well another morning we overslept - til 10 am this time. We had breakfast and decided that we would go to the island of Waiheke. Waiheke is the largest of the islands off Auckland. So down to the ferry we went. Except that we waved goodbye to the 12 pm ferry as we went in to buy our tickets. We told the guy behind the desk that we wanted senior tickets. He looked at us amazed - over 65 he challenged. No but yesterday we were told that we had to be over 60 when we bought them from this same counter. Well he said, in a very broad Stockport accent, if you want to blag it, you can have senior tickets. We are not proud and so armed with our senior tickets - including our ... read more

I was awoken by a text message. Thank you Vodafone because it was 9.40 am. I think that we were tired. I had to have coffee - yes I know it was a fast day but without the coffee I would never have made it through the day. Well it was too late to do long distance exploring so we sauntered down to the pier to see what was on offer. We decided to go on "a harbour cruise". The cruise was one and a half hours and allowed us to see some of the many islands around the bay near Auckland. New Zealand is volcanic and the lava has thrown up many islands. The newest is Rangitoto which grew out of the sea a mere 650 years ago. When the convicts were sent to New ... read more

We arrived at AKL airport, collected our bags, a SIM card and a car all within 40 minutes. Not bad considering that the sniffer dogs were walking over all the suitcases on the carousel, following passengers out of the terminal and then all suitcases were x-rayed. They are looking for illicit food and wooden souvenirs. New Zealand is fastidious about preserving its wild life and its natural habitat. We drove through the rain to our hotel in down town Auckland. We are not staying in the absolute centre but only a motion away (Paul Simon fans will recognise the pun). Our room is an apartment with a small kitchen, lounge/dining area and bedroom. Of course if everything went smoothly we would have nothing to write about. So we got all excited at being able to shower ... read more

Sunday 13 July. What is it they say about good intentions? Well our good intentions disappeared. We thought that we would have breakfast, pack and leave. Hotel breakfast was a disaster. The main staple in any meal in Hong Kong is pork. The smell was a bit overbearing and the non-meat items looked suspect so we passed. Don had already bought me a cup of coffee and we had some fruit in the room so we were set. We packed and checked out and found to our complete surprise that it was noon. We decided to go to the JCC (Jewish Community Centre) in Robinsons Road to be told that although it was literally the next road there was a vertical climb between the two roads. So we hopped into a taxi. Taxis are incredibly cheap ... read more

Saturday 12 July, Shabbat. We woke up very early. If we had been at home Don would have gone to the early service, but when in Rome... At 9.30 am we went out into the searing humidity to go to shul. There I was able to have my early morning coffee and felt a bit more human. The shul is situated in one of the posh looking blocks of apartments. But to get to it on Shabbat one has to climb the stone service stairs. The first three flights lead to the car park which will give you the feel of the place. The next floor up is where the shul is located. As is usual with the Chabad it was a very welcoming and spiritual experience. After the service and before kiddush the Rebetzen went ... read more
