I forgot to mention that yesterday I took two strong pain killers as I had a slight reaction to the sulphur like bad headache and my hip was a bit sore. Oh and I had my usual two glasses of white wine in honour of shabbat. As a result I slept until 10:30 when I was rudely awakened by a fire drill alarm for crew members to hold a practice. Don was in shul so I found some coffee and read to wake myself up. It was a glorious day. We anchored in Auckland. After kiddush and lunch we thought that we would go for a walk in town. But we had locked our security id in the safe and wouldn't open the electronic safe on Shabbat. So we played bridge with Marcia and Norman. It ... read more

Kia ora - no not a request for an orange drink but hello in the Maori language. Looked out of the porthole and saw rain. Typical as we have chosen to take a 9.5 hour tour from the port of Tauranga to Rotorua. Good news - we looked out our cabin door and the exit sign has been replaced! We were on the bus at 8.45 am and off we went. I slept most of the way. Our first stop was Rainbow Springs. This is a nature reserve. There are four species of trout in NZ of which two were imported from tbe UK and one from the USA. The fourth species came from interbreeding. It is illegal for trout to be sold in restaurants. They can only be hunted. They are not captive in the ... read more

The Maori name is Taumatawhakatanghihangako-auauotamteaturipukapikimaunga-horonuku-pokaiwhenuakitanatahu. This is a Maori phrase recalling the mythical Tamatea (land eater) who serenaded his lover with a magical flute. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (a Welsh town - the longest place name in the English language) eat your heart out. The original town was destroyed by an earthquake on 3 February 1931 and as a result of the quake it gained 10,000 acres of land from the debris thrown up from the sea. It was rebuilt in the Art Deco style. We started our morning visiting the Aquarium. We passed on the lunchtime special as we were afraid it would be too fresh. The aquarium is used as a means of teaching about the environment and conservation of species. From there we wandered back into the town and spotted a Starbucks. Note for niece Katie ... read more

Today we docked at Wellington. We took the shuttle bus into town and walked to the cable car which took us up to Kelburn(e). The town was originally spelt with the final "e" but by the time we got there it changed its spelling :-} The views of Wellington were stunning. We seem to be running out of adjectives to describe New Zealand. We walked around the top of the mount and went to the cable car museum. This was really interesting. Don bought me a cardigan in the museum shop. We came down in the cable car and walked around the stores. Being Boxing Day the sales started. It is a long time since I went to the sales on the day after Christmas. Sales give Boxing Day its modern meaning! Oh we found a ... read more

The day started at 1:45 am when the phone rang. Was it Santa stuck in the chimney? No it was a call from the desk asking if all was ok in the room. Don had pushed the emergency call button instead of turning off his light Christmas day came and it went. There was an announcement at 9 something am that a UFO had been spotted by NASA coming towards the ship. Guess who? Well it kept the little ones (and some adults) amused when Santa finally landed on the ship. Although we were anchored in the middle of nowhere at least the sun was shining. Tomorrow we are going to Wellington. I am sure you will be pleased to know that we have no buckets nor caution triangles outside our room but no exit light ... read more

Today (Monday 24 December 2012) we docked in Akaroa, New Zealand. Akaroa, long harbour in the Maori language, is the crater of a volcano which became extinct about 6m years ago. Akaroa is located on the eastern side of the south island (just south of Wellington). As there was a trip with a difference, which didn't start 'til 10:30 am, we decided to do that tour. To reach the town we had to go by tender and once in the town we boarded the ketch Fox II for a wildlife tour of the crater. The boat, which was built in 1920 and started life as a British cargo boat, was captained by Roy, the current owner. The crew were three young people who are involved in one of the many conservation schemes in NZ. We sailed ... read more

Well the bucket was still under the light when we went down for breakfast. Yes I know it is the fast of Tevet but I don't fast. The fast will go out at 10:04 tonight. About half the group were fasting. Don and I together with Marcia and Norman got off the ship which had berthed in Port Chalmers. We hailed a taxi or rather Don hailed the taxi in his inimical fashion of launching himself in front of it. The poor driver had little option but to stop. The taxi driver and his brother own a farm of about 200 acres. He asked us if we wanted a tour of the scenic route and we said yes. The landscape from above the town is spectacular. He also showed us the steepest road in the world ... read more

Approaching NewZealand the ship made a very quick stop at Milford Sound at 8 am to drop off some passengers who had paid for an overnight excursion overland along the fiord. We slept through this. However, the scenery we sailed past whilst having breakfast was spectacular. Shul was interesting (?) I made it in time for the Torah reading and then to witness a battle between the leader of Mussaf and some congregants. He wanted to speed along without singing or even time to take a breath whilst the congregants wanted the opposite. This was followed by kiddush and lunch. We had our Christmas turkey a few days early :) Then a Shabbat shluf for 2 1/2 hours. Then our Shabbat treat - ice cream. By this time all we could see was sea and white-capped ... read more

Friday all day we are at sea. How does one amuse oneself? Well how about we start with three itsy bitsy cups of coffee and food. Then not having not met our steward we need to report a safety issue in our cabin. So we call maintenance. They ask us if we have told our cabin steward. We tell them that he or she is a little shy. So maintenance reports back that they have gotten onto the steward's case and reports back to us. (N.B. English is not the first language for most of the staff and communication is not always easy.) Five minutes later we get another call asking if there is anybody in our room. I replied that if there was nobody in the room I couldn't answer the phone. A giggle comes ... read more

Us northerners are used to travelling south in the winter for sun and warmth. However, as we cruise down towards the southern end of NZ it is raining and cooler. No suntan on deck today so it was a good thing that we both had massages booked. Heaven is a hot stones massage. More food for lunch, and we would have closed the restaurant as usual were it not for the fact that the restaurant had been opened to the public for high tea. Don spent the rest of the afternoon swearing at the internet sorting out his UK tax return. I pretended to study my Talmud lecture between snores. Tonight was the Kosherica cocktail reception. I am not sure what was in the glasses but the ship seemed to sway a lot more. It was ... read more
