It won't surprise you to know that we didn't get an early start to the day! Don went out for our morning coffee (as he does every morning) and we set off south from Cairns to visit a rain forest. En route we stopped at Bebinda to visit the Boulders. This is a spectacular waterfall. It is an Aborigine sacred place. The story (in brief) behind this rock formation is that a young girl fell in love with a young boy from a different trible and when they weren't allowed to marry she threw herself into the water and the boulders were thrown up and the waterfall was formed. To drive through to the Boulders you have to drive through the town of Bebinda. This is just like the town in Neighbours (for those of you ... read more

We spent the morning packing. We had wanted to go to Cook's house but guess what - we got up late :( We took the train to Balaclava in order to have lunch with Sylvia and Michael (our friends from the cruise). We went to lunch in the equivalent of Hendon at a dairy restaurant called Savion. It was very nice and we even got to bring bagels back with us for the flight. They brought us back to the hotel and we got a cab to the domestic airport to take a Jetstar plane to Cairns. The airport was a complete balagan. The whole thing made Ovda airport in Eilat seem like the epitome of civilisation. After being shunted from one queue to another, four queues later we got checked in and boarded our flight ... read more

(There should be 6 PHOTOS and - eventually when uploaded successfully - a video for this posting, so SCROLL DOWN to see them if they do not appear within this text frame.) We had a lie-in this morning. Sleeping is moreish; the more you get the more you want! Once we got going we decided to walk through Fitzroy Gardens. Amongst other things the park is home to Captain Cook's house, the oldest building in Australia. It is also home to beautiful gardens. We crossed the park and decided to follow the Golden Mile Heritage trail, passing old buildings of architectural significance housed among the high rise buildings of modern Melbourne. Among them was the Scots Church, the burial place of Dame Nellie Melba, a renowned soprano in Europe and particularly Britain (19th C). All along ... read more

Shabbat is Shabbat wherever we are. It has a regular routine - shul (if I am up in time), lunch and sleep. And it was no different here. Esther's parents joined the lunch party which consisted of all the kids. Each child wanted to learn something different about Shabbat so that they could express what they had learned that week (even though they had been on vacation arriving back Friday afternoon). And of course the eldest knew all the answers before the littler ones could get a word in edgeways. After lunch came sleep time. When we awoke 2 hours later I managed half a page of daf yomi and then we played with the kids and sat around schmoozing until the end of Shabbat. After Shabbat we made our long goodbyes and Moshe took Kate, ... read more

From the 16th floor we can see the trains and trams and bicycle lanes (as well as cars). For some unknown reason it always takes forever to get out and today was no exception. Two hours it took to organise two overnight bags, make a couple of phone calls and get out. We left our suitcases with the concierge as we are coming back Saturday night. We are off to East St Kilda to spend Shabbat with the Rabbi Moshe Loewenthal family. The Loewenthal "clan" are family friends but Don and I have not met the Australian family yet. Then into the car to drive to Hertz. There we found out that we were able to use the toll roads (scream). By the time we sorted out Hertz we had passed another hour. By this time ... read more

After a good night's sleep and another shower we are ready to face the day. Back to normal size breakfast of cereal, fruit and mud - oops coffee or so they claimed. This was rather leisurely this morning as the internet failed last night and we had to update things this morning. Our objective today is to reach Melbourne, 660 km away. After leaving Canberra we picked up highway 31. This makes the M1 appear to be the most exciting road to drive. The scenery is one continuous brown field with some green trees and brown hills. The most exciting part of the journey so far is to discover that Wagga Wagga really exists. The road has slogans scattered along on billboards. These are phrases like: "Alcohol and speed DEAD ahead" and "Late? or Paralysed? Your ... read more

It's 5:30am and we have 2 text messages on 2 separate phones. Panic short lived by the discovery of Vodafone welcoming us to Australia. Turn over and go back to sleep for one lovely hour. Last big Kosherica breakfast and more farewells and more futzing before leaving the ship. Don got by Australia immigration to have his shoes because we were honest enough to declare we had been on a farm in NZ. I get off scot free. (Makes a change!) We take a taxi to collect our hire car from Hertz which is to be our new mode of transport for the next 5 days. He has this magical brainwave to leave 2kg of stuff at the Marriott where we will stay (again) in Sydney. After driving around for what seemed like an eternity to ... read more

Poor Don is really quite poorly. His cold is really rotten. Not quite the start to the new year he would want. We had a quick breakfast and went up on deck to get as much benefit from the sun as possible. The sun may have been shining but the wind was very, very strong. The captain said in his daily broadcast that we were at the tail end of a northerly gale. I lasted about an hour and then went into the library to read a page of daf yomi. Then after lunch we both slept for two hours. We are both ready to start the next stage of our adventure. Dinner was spent exchanging emails, handing out tips and saying farewells in case we don't see people at breakfast. We also met the executive ... read more

Heading west and rocking on the waves of the Tasman Sea, I think that we took some advantage of that extra hour's sleep. Don woke the ship up with a colossal sneeze at about 5 am. His cold is breaking out. We went in for breakfast and as usual closed the restaurant. We were looking at a map of Victoria to Melbourne with Sylvia and Michael. We are driving there from Sydney and they advised us where to go and where to stay along the southeastern coast of Australia. We went to a Q & A session with Yehuda (the owner of Kosherica) and his chief organiser of cruises, Aliza. It was interesting to hear of all the challenges and strategies involved in organising one cruise. Yehuda's favourite place is Costa Rica so we could very ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Bay of Islands December 30th 2012

Today we are in the furthest north point on the eastern side of the North Island and it rained. We have been caught in the tail end of a cyclone. The sea is quite choppy and the only way to shore is by tender. As we are going to be at sea for the next two days we decided to get off and visit Waitangi and across the single lane version of the Sydney bridge to Paihia. Poor Don has a cold and is not a happy bunny. The waves going across were quite high. The towns were a big disappointment; dirty and shabby. If the weather had been brighter we may have taken a sailing trip around some of the 140+ islands. They even count a big rock an island. So instead we took the ... read more
