Had breakfast on the roof this morning, Bob's good coffee, fruit, and muffins. We had the place to ourselves, very peaceful. After breakfast we took off on a three hour walk up north along the beach. There are many accesses to the beach, and you can walk through any hotel area to get there. There are many rock piles jutting out into the water. The waves come in and splash high over them. Great photos if you catch the waves at just the right moment. Saw a guy collecting clams. A few venders were walking the beach, selling jewelry, hats, blankets, etc. They were all very polite and accepted a "No, gracias" with no problem. As we walked the beach, we hit the river. The waves went in and out, but the main river area was ... read more

Arrived in Puerto Vallarta about 20 minutes early, very smooth flight. Weather was very pleasant, about 80 degrees and a slight breeze. Our hotel, Mar Elena, is in the northern hotel zone, very conveniently located. We took a bus from the airport to the hotel, a total of 90 cents! We arrived at the hotel about dinner time. Walked around the area, found a bank where our local bank card actually worked, and discovered a great little place for tacos. Tako's Grill is located close to the hotel, and had some delicious food. Found a big general store around the corner, where we could get fruit and pastries for breakfasts. Back at the hotel we checked out the pool on the fourth floor roof. Very nice view, especially at night. Now that we are settled in ... read more

Wednesday Back home again! We had a great time, saw some beautiful scenery—the rain forest, the mountains, the seashore—and enjoyed some good Costa Rican seafood. But it is always good to be home, even though it is a few degrees colder here! Happy Holidays to all. Bob This is Margie’s blog but I get to add my comments. The people were very nice and very helpful when we had a question. There were a lot of smiles and we had a wonderful time. On the negative side, Costa Rica is very good at sticking it to the tourists. When we first arrive in a country, I find an ATM and get a few hundred dollars worth of the local currency. In the San Jose airport I tried to use the ATM in the baggage area and was ... read more

Tuesday We had an early breakfast at Dorling's Bakery, our favorite place for morning baguettes. We had a table right on the edge of the Tortuguero River. Very picturesque. This river flows one way into the sea, and joins with the Suerte River in the other direction going past La Pavona. Today our final destination was San Jose, so we just took the reverse route we took to get here. So from Tortuguero to La Pavona to Cariari to San Jose. We got the boat tickets separately, about $3 apiece, very inexpensive for a great one hour trip. When the river is low, the trip can take up to two hours. Saw many shore birds, similar to blue herons and egrets, but no crocodiles this time. We did, however, see a young man swimming in ... read more

Monday We were followed half-way back from the bakery this morning by a little dog. Guess he liked the smell of fresh bread. When we got back to the room, our very creative maid had made two towel dogs! Walked some of the back streets in town this morning. Saw the cutest little boy playing with a stick and two huge bugs. They were cockroaches, the biggest bugs I have ever seen. I asked if I could take his picture and got a big smile. We walked by a few restaurants found online, just to check them out. Then we sat by the ocean to get a sea breeze. Early afternoon we walked through town again. Music is big here. There is a large music academy in town. You always see kids in the main park ... read more

Sunday Lots of rain last night, but it let up enough this morning to go to the bakery to get a fresh baguette. So good! We got rid of some coins. Bob's pockets were loaded down with colones coins, so much change back from last night's dinner! Ate breakfast on the patio again, with a little dog outside the railing looking in at us. The hotel here is very clean. Maids are very creative.Yesterday our towels were a swan, today they were a basket with real flowers. Took another walk after breakfast. There was a little breeze, but it gets pretty hot by 9:30am. Saw my blue bird again; googled him this time and found out he was a blue-gray tanager. Went to the pool this afternoon to cool off. They had put in some ... read more

Saturday Took an early morning walk on the beach, looking for birds and sand dollars. We heard and saw a couple of green macaws, but we probably won't be able to get a photo. Saw a group watching some baby turtles buried in a hole. Some babies are hatching now. On the way back stopped at the bakery and fruit market for breakfast items. We have a nice patio in front of our room, very peaceful. Breakfast pineapple was delicious. The hotel is very colorful, with a strip of jungle plants down the middle of two sets of units. There is a small restaurant area near the front where you can order breakfast if you wish. Seven hammocks are strung from a center post under a pagoda, with a great ocean view We can hear the ... read more

Friday Last night Minnesota football was televised in Costa Rica! We left one suitcase at Quinta Avanita, some of the items we didn't need in Tortuguero. We wanted to pack lightly. We will stay here again on our last night. Today was our travel day to Tortuguero. We were up early, found a taxi, and had lots of extra time at the bus station. Traffic was heavy, lots of horn honking, lots of people, and many motorcycles. San Jose seemed particularly crowded after four days in the jungle with the monkeys. We picked up our tickets yesterday, about $6 total from San Jose to Cariari, the first leg of our journey. The favorite at the food stalls at the bus station (Caribe--there are about 15 stations spread throughout San Jose) seemed to be rice and beans, ... read more

http://Thursday This morning we had to leave this lovely hostel and our monkey friends. The host called a taxi for us, and it was very prompt. A car drove past us, turned around, stopped by us, and a young man with dreadlocks smiled and said, "I'm the taxi guy." Made me smile. This taxi was actually a vehicle. The taxi that took us up to the hostel was a pick-up truck. Our luggage went inside the railings in the back, and we shared the one extra seat in the front (after the driver wiped it off and put down a towel for us!) Taxi got us down to Uvita, where the bus station was in front of a large open cafeteria area with much seating. A good place to wait. We got there about 45 minutes ... read more

Wednesday We have now been in Costa Rica three weeks. Time has gone by quickly. This morning we had a monkey show from the top balcony. About five or six white-faced capuchins were playing in the trees, swinging from branch to branch, and sliding down long tree limbs. So fun to watch. They are much more playful than the howlers, who just seem to sit there and hang out. This afternoon we took the short walk to the waterfalls just up the road from the hostel. Since it is on private property, there was a small entrance fee ($2 per person). There are actually three levels to the falls, the third level the most impressive. There were clean, refreshing pools of water for swimming at each level. Lots of rocks to climb over, and some tree ... read more
