Melaque Sunday Today we walked to Barra de Navidad, a small town down the coast. We started out on a main road in Melaque, then along the way we headed to the beach. Lots of dogs, many sleeping in the middle of the street, slowing down traffic. Passed an interesting shop selling vases made from carved tree trunks. Many homes and bungalos for rent with cement walls and gates, but when you look beyond the walls you see lots of flowers and foliage. Not at all expected. The beach sand heading to Barra is very fine, nice for walking, no stones and only a few small shells. We passed through a hotel gate along the beach, and passed through an RV park. Most RV parking areas also had cars or bikes. The majority of the license ... read more

Melaque Saturday Melaque is a usual Mexican town, lots of restaurants and art and sourvenir shops, but peaceful and not much traffic. Our hotel is a couple of blocks from the beach. We did some more exploring in the town tihis morning, and found a place with hot cakes and eggs for breakfast. Back at the hotel, we settled under a thatched umbrella to read books. Bob found his hammock. A mama yellow lab and her four pups came running by, very cute. The pups were very mischievous and two little guys stole Bob's socks. Bob had taken off his shoes and put his socks on top. Those little pups just took off. We were laughing so hard. The owner chased them down and returned the socks. I put the socks in my lap to keep ... read more

Melaque Friday Today we headed to our next destination, Melaque. We had the Mar Sereno call the bus company and have them pick us up at the hotel. This saved us traveling back into Puerto Vallarta to the bus station and riding back again to the hotel. We waited on a round tree seat in front of the hotel. A big iguana shared the seat with us, but he seemed to be sleepy and didn't cause any problem. We actually saved about $6 by taking this bus rather than the one from town. The road is called Costalegre, the main road from Puerto Vallarta down the coast. Most of the time we were away from the ocean, however. The bus was comfortable, with A/C, movie screens (in Spanish), and bathrooms. It made a few stops along ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Thursday Today was a very lazy day. Spent most of the day on the balcony or by the pool, reading and looking for whales. We are both into our mystery books. Later in the afternoon we walked down to Boca for garlic shrimp at the restaurant at the top of the hill, La Ramadita. Very good as usual. We took the bus back and got off at our stop across from the hotel. The artist and his dog were there working in the yard. We talked to him for a while and he showed us some weavings he had made. Made a late dinner at the hotel. Tomorrow we catch the bus to Melaque. It has been a very pleasant, peaceful week here.... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Wednesday We have already been in Mexico a week. The time has gone by very quickly. Today we walked down to Boca to check out the taco place Gibran recommended, but again it was closed. We did find another place though, which was very good and extremely reasonable. Saw a funny combination of doggie playmates, a big retriever and a tiny chihuahua. Very cute. Took the bus directly from Boca to Puerto Vallarta. A guy was singing along with his background music on tape, entertaining the bus passengers. He sang La Bamba and some people were singing along with him. We spent a long time walking around Vallarta. We walked through an area with many art studios and sculpture shops. Most of the buildings are white. We again walked along the Malecon by ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Tuesday Today was our day to visit Mismaloya, less than half-way from our hotel to Puerto Vallarta. We waited at the bus stop across the street. The stop, a small thatched roof area with plants, was built by the artist who has lived up the hill from the stop for over forty years. We have talked to him in previous years, and saw him at the stop this morning. Very friendly older gentleman. Mismaloya Beach and Puerto Vallarta was just a fishing village, known only to locals, until 1963 when John Houston scouted the area for his film Night of the Iguana. The film, the famous director, and the real-life romance between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor transformed Puerto Vallarta into a Mexican destination The set and crew quarters are up in the ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Monday Today was an adventurous day, a three hour walk to Las Animas Beach. We started out by walking down to Boca, past the hill down into town, a little further down the main road, then down some steps to cross the river in Boca. Many fishing boats and shore birds in this area. The path to Animas takes us first to Colomitos Beach. The path has been improved since we were last there, several years ago. More stone steps have been installed, and more railings along the ocean cliffs. But it was still up and down, up and down. Beautiful views of the ocean from the cliff. Last time we were at Colomitos we had the beach to ourselves. Now there is a boardwalk leading to a restaurant hanging over the ocean. ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Sunday We saw a water taxi going from Boca to Puerto Vallarta this morning while we ate breakfast on the balcony. Later we took the bus into PV, walked around the town and along the Malecon (walk by the ocean). PV seems to be a mix of old and new. Lots of food carts and outdoor booths, old fruit markets, as well as some very fancy, expensive shops and hotels. You can see the mountains in the background, homes up in the hills. Stopped for a snack of fish tacos at an outdoor stand. It has been in the same location for many years and we stop each time we are there. Excellent fish, huge pieces. Walked around the central market, with row upon row of crafts on the main floor, and very ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Saturday We spent the morning on our balcony, playing a game of Scrabble and watching for whales. We saw a few fishing boats and a tourist pirate ship, but unfortunately no whales. But I did win the Scrabble game (by 4 points), so that was a highlight. The waves were fierce this morning, churning up against the rocks. Noah at the desk said the ocean was angry today. We walked down to Boca again (about a 15 minute walk from the hotel), down a hill into the town itself. We wanted to check out the taco place recommended by Gibran at the desk, located at the bottom of the hill on the right. Unfortunately it was closed. We walked the main street to do a little exploring. A few shops were out of ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Friday After breakfast on the roof, we walked south on the main road. We could see Old (Viejo) Puerto Vallarta in the distance. Walked by a very interesting old building. It was in total disrepair, but would have been gorgeous in its day. Might have at one time been a hotel. The stained glass windows were broken, but we could look inside and see the old stonework, big arches, and a huge curved staircase with a wrought iron railing. Too bad these old gems aren't kept up. Check-out time at our hotel was 11:00am, and we took the bus across from the hotel to our next destination. We're headed down the coast to the Mar Serano Hotel, just north of Boca de Tomatlan. The first bus took us through a couple of tunnels, ... read more
