While I was doing research prior to traveling I was able to find information about going from Miri to Brunei to KK, or some other variation where KK was always the final desintation. Often, the information I found was from 2+ years ago. This is soley a how-to travel guide with no here's-what-I-did-for-fun bits thrown in. Here's how I did the trip from east to west via the ferry and bus: In KK, arrive at the ferry pier before 7am. I left my hostel around 630 am, bought my ticket (at counter #4) a bit before 7, and we lined up for boarding at 720am, 730 if you go by the clock on the wall. The first part of the journey takes you to Labaun, Malaysia. Arrival is around 1130am and you have about 2 hours ... read more

My friend and I arrived in BSB around 4pm. We exchanged money at one of the few exchange places--conveniently located next to the bus station--and then set out to find Pusat Belia. Pusat Belia is the cheapest accomodation in all of Brunei ($10 USD a night for a bed) and if we couldn't get beds there we knew we'd need more money since everywhere else is quite expensive. We found Pusat and waited around a bit for someone to help us. While we waited, middle school children ran all around us with fencing equipment. I finally checked in around 5pm and my friend... well, he was told to come back around 10pm and they might have a bed for him. With the fencing tournament it seems most beds were occupied, even though there are twice as ... read more

I got up early to catch the 8am bus up to the park. I have no delusions about myself and I know I'm not a mountain climber. For me, there is no sunset spectacular enough to make me climb half a mountain one day, sleep overnight on the mountain, and then arise at 230am to finish the climb in time for sunrise. I saw my friend's photos; while they were beautiful, they didn't inspire me that much. We had clear weather all the way up the mountain. That is, until we reached the park. Suddenly, we were in a cloud. A wet, cold cloud. Mind you, my friend had told me that the park would be plenty warm, so I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I was freezing. I put on the extra shirt I'd ... read more

I accidentally slept late, but I think I was tired from my trip the day before yet. I got to the pier around 10am to buy my ticket to the islands. Online it says I can buy a ticket to as many islands I want to visit in one day, I just need to pay an extra fee for each additional island. Not so. I was informed--rather rudely--that the policy is, "One person, one island." When I tried to find out more information, like why, I was just told to go to the next window and leave them alone. Nice, huh? The islands were the only reason I was still in KK since there's little else to do. I was forced to choose one island on the spot. I chose Manuksan because it was larger than ... read more

I arrived in KK after an overnight in the KL airport. This time, luckily, I was in the nice lounge so I had a bench to sleep on on the fifth floor. I got up there at 1030pm and I got the last one. I thought I was going too early, considering all the noise and chaos still around. Fortunately, it and the loudspeaker announcements subsided by midnight. Arriving in KK was fairly easy. I got a pre-paid taxi from a window in the airport. 30 RM gets you an air conditioned lift into the city and no funny business from the drivers. I took a nap for a few hours before heading out to scope out the city. Since it was Sunday many things were closed. But I could at least figure out where things ... read more

At Ubud's tourist information center there are free copies of the nightly schedule of traditional dance performaces. Each night around the city there are 9-10 different performances for about 75,000 rupiah a person to attend. They all last 1-1.5 hours. Full of traditional music and costumes, they mesmerize and captivate. I went to three of them. I went to one my first night in Ubud. I admit I was persuaded by the architecture of the theater and by one of the cute kids helping them sell tickets. When I arrived that night, he remembered me and gave me a big grin and wave. First the musicians played us some music. Balinese music is unlike any I've heard before and it takes some getting used to. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about it, but ... read more

My last full day in Bali I took an organized tour. I'd been trying all week, but with a minimum of two people needed per tour, I'd been stuck waiting for someone else to book first so I could join them. We set off at 9am for a tour around central Bali to see 7 different sights: Goa Gajah -- the Elephant Cave Tampak Siring -- The holy spring water temple Tirta Empul Temen -- a coffee plantation Penelokan -- Mount and Lake Batur Besakih -- the most important temple in Bali, located at the base of Mount Agung Bukit Jambur -- rice terraces Klungkung -- Old Court Justice of the Kingdom The couple I joined was from the east coast of the US but had acutally lived in Minneapolis a few years ago. We had ... read more

I arrived at ten o'clock, right on time for my appointment. A little path led me through a small garden to waiting slippers and a smiling staff. They presented me with some fresh juice while we went over a few more details of my plan. I chose my body mask and which type of facial I wanted. Fortunately, those were the only difficult decisions I had to make. After being shown to my room (with two massage tables!) I changed into spa attire (disposable underwear and a sarong) and sat down to wait. The music piped in was calm and relaxing and very Balinese. I never did hear the same song twice. My spa attendant (what does one call her?) arrived a few minutes later and explained how things would go: An hour and a half ... read more

After another leisurely breakfast of homemade coconut and banana stuffed pancakes, I decided to see the rice paddies. There are rice paddies all around Ubud, but numerous people at my homestay agreed that the ones to the northwest of town were the best. The owners' son gave me a lift up to where the side road crossed Ubud Raya. I walked up a steep, uneven concrete road, followed a little path down behind a brick wall, and then suddenly, I was engulfed in beauty. There were rows of green rice and palm trees as far as the eye could see. I started walking down the narrow path. It turns out that it's planting season, so some of the fields were muddy and seemingly empty. But many had small shoots of rice growing. There were small groups ... read more

I'm not a big fan of monkeys, but since everyone I talked to said I should go, I decided to check out the monkey forest. One guy at my hostel warned me to not take any water with me because the monkeys will want to steal it, and then went on to tell me about what happened when he visited a few weeks ago. While I thought perhaps he was exaggerating a bit, I did leave my empty bottle in a trash bin. I bought my ticket and saw a woman selling bananas by the gate. I refused, feeling smart and safe since I know the monkeys would probably chase me for the bananas. Three steps into the park, I was suddenly flat on my bottom, blood gushing from my leg. It took me a moment ... read more
