It's been a while since I've spent a decent amount of time in a Chinese park. Sadly, I don't live near any since my university's campus is a bit outside the city. But in the city, there are parts everywhere--some big, some small--and they're a gathering place for everyone around to come, be social, relax, play games, dance, and make music. If you want to experience the vibrancy of China, there's no better place than a park. The park I used to go to in Shenzhen was only 5 minutes from my home and was fairly small. But it always had people playing sports or laughing with each other. Some afternoons, a group of friends (or I assumed they were, maybe they're friendly strangers) would gather and make music. It was nice. Guangzhou has lots of ... read more

For their exam topic, my students needed to interview a married couple and tell their love story using past tense. Keep in mind that my students' parents and aunts and uncles would have all met in the mid-1980's -- mid 1990's. A student decided to talk about a celebrity actor and actress. When I asked how she interviewed them, she replied that she found the information on the internet. I explained that since she didnt' follow the instructions, I would take off a few points. She replied that she had misunderstood me. I pointed out that it was clearly written in her book as part of the questions they were assigned. She looked sad and sat down. The next pair of students stood before the class. One gave a brief introduction (less than a minute) that ... read more

May 1 is International Labor Day, which means no school! My first year in China the 1st was on a Friday and we only got the one day off while everyone grumbled that it used to be a week. Ditto for 2010 and 2011. Last year we had three days off, Mon-Wed, making up the two extra days the previous weekend. This year, though, we were off for five days, April 29--May 3, and made up work both the weekend before and the weekend after. (We worked 7 days, had 5 off, and then worked 7 more. Which, in my opinion, completely negates the purpose of a holiday because everyone is too tired to enjoy it.) Most schools and businesses only had Mon-Wed off. We most likely had more time consecutively because some of our students ... read more

My favorite week of the term! Student groups write plays, not for themselves, but for another group in the class. The next week they practice and perform. Here are my favorites of the term: One group did a quick rewrite to include a student who'd been absent last week. They decided he was Garlic (the vegetable) and was responsible for all the problems two couples were having (where one half of each liked garlic and the other thought it was smelly). Then in the end he pleaded with them to not eat him because he wanted to live.A pair of crossed lovers made more interested because the actors ... read more

My friend loves exploring as much as I do. So on a perfectly beautiful Saturday, she and I took the bus into the city and hit the streets with our cameras and senses of adventure. We took side streets, narrow alleys, the road less taken (at least, for foreigners). Whenever I do this, I find a side of China that I don't often see: quiet, peace, curiosity, genuine kindness. There's no rush of the big city, no desire to charge me three times more, just a simple life waiting to be shared. And now I'm sharing the photos. Enjoy.... read more

I awoke feeling refreshed, ready for my last day in Hong Kong. My bus back to the mainland wasn't until 3pm, so that left me with plenty of time. I took the MTR to Mong Kok. Usually a bustling part of the city, I was surprised by how peaceful it is when it's still waking up. Streets are nearly empty, shops are starting to open, people are out running morning errands and getting breakfast before the day begins. It's surprisingly quiet. As the hours went by, the city came to life, full of energy and rhythm and ritual. I wandered, and got lost, and found myself near one subway stop, then another. I'm not even sure where I wandered to, but I savored it all. As the hours passed, the city awoke and came to life, ... read more

It rained heavily overnight so I slept late to avoid it in the morning. By the time I left things had dried considerably. My strategy worked!I took the MTR to Lantau and then took bus 23 to the Big Buddha. The cable car is nicer (and easier on the stomach) but the bus is far cheaper. The Buddha looked glorious as the sun was poking through the clouds for the first time in weeks. I skipped a proper visit, though. Due to the holiday, it was a bit crowded.I took a quick look around the monastery--I'd never visited before--and then continued onwards to the Wisdom Path, fifteen minutes further along the path.I'd been hoping to stop and have some tea at the Tea Garden, but it looks very closed and like it hasn't been open in years. ... read more

Another special day! I made it to my favorite breakfast place just before it started to pour. While I was dining (and wanting to lick my plate) my friend messaged me. We originally were going to spend the afternoon having drinks atop a hotel roof overlooking the harbor. But with the rain and the severe weather forecast, she suggested changing our plan. I agreed. At 2pm we met at TST and walked over to The Peninsula Hotel. Everyday from 2-6pm they serve proper afternoon tea. I've been wanting to do this for years, but due to the cost and my friends' work schedules never quite got to it. We waited in line for about two hours for a table and were seated just after 4pm. Two hours is a lot of time for anticipation to grow! ... read more

Before meeting my friend for dim sum, I wandered around Wan Chai for about an hour. I thought I'd been there before and was surprised to realize none of it looked familiar to me. But it made the wander even more enjoyable since I was constantly discovering new things around each corner. I met my friend around noon and we went to a well-known seafood and dim sum restaurant. It was--without a doubt--the best dim sum I've ever had. We spent three hours stuffing ourselves silly and catching up and talking about future plans. After she went back to the mainland for the holiday, I shopped a little, had some coffee, and decided to check out the laser light show again. I hadn't seen it in years and forgot how huge the crowds were. While it's ... read more

I arrived Tuesday night on the last bus from Guangzhou, had dinner, and then went to bed early. Today, I awoke early, feeling refreshed. I got an early start out the door to run a few errands before meeting my friend for lunch at noon. We went up to the mid-levels to my favorite taco restaurant. We looked at the sky, decided it looked like rain, and went to the movies and hated it. It's rare that I hate a movie, but this was one of those times. The only reason we didn't walk out was because we kept hoping there'd be some character or plot development and the whole thing would come together in a genius way at the end. No luck. We took the trolleys, or "ting tings" as they're called locally for a ... read more
