I arrived at ten o'clock, right on time for my appointment. A little path led me through a small garden to waiting slippers and a smiling staff. They presented me with some fresh juice while we went over a few more details of my plan. I chose my body mask and which type of facial I wanted. Fortunately, those were the only difficult decisions I had to make.
After being shown to my room (with two massage tables!) I changed into spa attire (disposable underwear and a sarong) and sat down to wait. The music piped in was calm and relaxing and very Balinese. I never did hear the same song twice. My spa attendant (what does one call her?) arrived a few minutes later and explained how things would go:
• An hour and a half full body massage
• Full body mud mask
• Shower off and then take a bath in a tub filled with flower petals
• A one hour cucumber facial
I've had many massages in the past fives years all over Asia and this one was the one I'd always dreamed of. Relaxing, soothing, complete, and just the right amount of pressure. I have
never felt so good. Under the table where my head rested there was even a basket of fresh red and pink flowers for me to smell. They think of everything.
Somehow I managed to sit up so she could slather me in my mud mask. She wrapped me in two sarongs and left me to rest for about fifteen minutes while the mud worked its magic.
The flower bath was one thing I looked forward to the most. When I had compared the brochures of all the spas in Ubud, this was a dealbreaker for me. And it was as amazing as I'd dreamed. Not quite what you see on TV (there was obviously no ocean view), but I still felt completely pampered as I sipped my lemon tea and ate my fruit. It was fun to reach an arm out just to watch the red and pink petals stick to my damp skin.
My facial didn't have nearly as much massaging as I'd hoped for but my skin feels great. She applied generous amounts of various creams, gently wiping each of them off after a bit. She steamed open my pores and slathered on more creams
and finally covered my face in cucumber slices. Except for the few slices that didn't want to stay on near my right jaw line, I imagine I smelled and looked like a very fresh, tropical salad.
All done and feeling blissful, I sipped lemon tea and filled out a feedback form. The sky was overcast earlier than usual. I paid the 350,000 Rupiah ($35 USD) and dashed out just as the first drops started to fall, arriving at my destination just moments before the skies open and it poured. I still felt relaxed and spa-fresh.
