The drive into Cancun was dismal. Did not recognize anything from 20years ago. It was definitely much bigger. As per usual we drove around in circles figuratively and actually. Finally made a stop before The Weary Traveller, which apparently was not our hostel. It was stated the name searched for was Mexico Hostels. Turns out they are one and the same. The entrance is tiny. The reception desk small. One TV in the entrance serves all the roomsof which there appear to be about ten. I occupied room four which had a terrific view of the washing machines. The towels cost 5pesos each and were decent; the pillow cases were long in coming; the sheets thin; the bathroom without shower curtain and stifling hot without AC; the bunk beds wobble enough to make one seasick ... read more

Oaxaca is a smallish city situated well south of Mexico City. It lies in the mountains and is reached by good roads. The truck stayed in a trailer camp that was only half there. The Oaxaca Trailer Camp situated at the corner of Violetta and Navel Militare, has been half sold to some one who is building a very large building at that corner. Only the men’s bathroom was open and as follows the rule since arriving in Mexico… paper is not flushed down the toilet. Even number two paper is deposited in a basket… (some with plastic liners…many not…) that stands beside the toilet bowl … at times closer to ones face than comfortable. The place was as usual set up for RV’s so it was dusty and hard ground into which we had to ... read more

After a wasted day of waiting in the courtyard of the Yeneka Hotel, in La Paz was finally picked up by truck, across the street from the bus station, on the Malecon, the next morning. They had camped at some disgustingly dirty playa… too bad they did not go a little further and find the perfect Playa Tecolote. I had rebooked myself into the room I had had the two previous nights. None of the group had seen La Paz. In the heat of the day they had an hours wander. I stayed on truck guard duty. I had spent a lovely time in the place already. The ferry ride involved a long wait and then a long crossing from La Paz to Topo, 24k outside Los Mochis. It was very noisy on the ferry. ... read more

Mexico City, El Ciudad, has 22million inhabitants, a fantastic Metro system, lots of good food and fantastic activities. Every store, restaurant and street vendor has a turned on TV watching either soap or the beautiful game. Most sidewalks in the city are covered with street vendors, selling anything and everything, leaving only space for single file walking, if that. The Hostel Mexico City, on Republica de Brasil No.8, email: reservacions@mexicocityhostel.com is squeezed between a Chinese Buffet and a camera shop, just steps away from the Zocala or Plaza de la Constitucion, creating the centre of the city. This square is proclaimed one of the biggest squares of the world, according to the Turistico info. On one side stands the Metropolitan Cathedral, the biggest in Latin America, behind an iron gate. The inside of the cathedral ... read more

The truck found me... a day later than anticipated. Spent a day hot sweaty and bum sore waiting for a call from the Karen. None came... rebooked the room I had left in the morning... showered ... went out to eat a Mexican Combination at the La Perla Hotel, while watching the Saturday evening traffic pass by on foot and in vehicles along the Malecon. The fish soup at Playa Tecolote was much more exciting than the presented four renditions of tortillas ... wrapped, crisped, deep fried and melted... all with cheese the same colour and had it not been for the spoonful of refried beans in the middle of it all and the left over salsa from the chip apperitif it would have been a meal bland beyond description. It has been made clear to ... read more

THE HOTEL This place is so much fun I recommend it for the alternative traveller and adventure seeker on a budget. Right downtown and terribly stimulating. Madero No.1520 e/ 16 de SeptembreE Indeptendencia, La PAz, BCS, Mexico. Tel y Fax 01 612 125 4688. Email: ynkmacias@prodigy.net.mx .... elycerecer67@hotmail.com Happy to report luckily brought my orange YMCA t-shirt for loungewear since I have been assigned room #20 … the yellow and orange room. Lesson learned: turn on all taps to see a) if they work and b) is there enough pressure in the pipes to send the water in the shower far enough away from the wall so that hugging the wall during ones libation is not necessary. It is a fifty year old hotel. The courtyard and every other spot that can hold, hang or ... read more

La Paz, BCS, Mexico … June 28, 2007 Stepped off the 50 passenger plane and was assailed by 38 degrees Celsius! Talk about stepping into an oven… THIS was it! Have now endured heat, cold, wind and wet. What else is there? Bring it on!! I suppose landslide, earthquake and volcanic eruption are possible … but how likely? Met a woman who owns a house near La Paz. She gave me a map of the city. That made landing and getting to downtown much less stressful. I always like to have a map…then I know where I am!! The airport is somewhat out of town and ‘un taxi collectivo’ cost $15US. A regular taxi would have cost $28. The only travel agent I could find was nice enough to phone the Hotel Yeneka for me ... read more

With sadness I returned to Sudbury because my Mother, who had been sick for seven years with multiple myloma was finally relieved from her unending pain. Hemine Smatlanek Calyn died June 12, 2007. She was 83 years old and had accomplished much in her life. She was an artist, a tailor, a weaver, a porcelain doll maker, a great cook and baker and a friend to many. She spoke Slovak, German, Hungarian and English. She crossed the ocean in a tiny freighter in the middle of winter and she trapped rabbits until a wolf chased her in the bush. She worked as a seamstress, waitress and chef. Mom loved her garden... flower and vegetable. I have a passion for Sweet Williams because in her first garden she had lined both sides the whole length of ... read more

Tuesday and Wednesday, June 5&6 The drive from Vancouver to Seattle was superb. We drove along Highway 5, a curvy and sometimes 90 degree square around the corners of farmer's fields. It was picturesque with red roofed barns and weathered tumble down sheds. It was soothing; displaying various sheds of green from fresh yellow green dandelion to spring green deciduous leaves to turquoise new spruce growth and to dark almost black green of aged pines. Every turn in the road presented a new collage of farm field fence and far off horizon. Will had a workout today what with all the 90 degree turns 60% grades and long tight stretches of road. The state of Washington makes me wax poetic. I love it. Arriving at the city outskirts of Seattle brought an abrupt end to ... read more

Three Sleeps in Vancouver The drive from Banff to Vancouver was fast and presented spectacular views of flooding rivers, burnt out forest sections, some new growth and the ever present meandering bear. The ctitters were busy eating dandelions. The bears looked healthy with masses of good thick fur and not at all emaciated. In the environs of Vancouver, Maple Ridge to be exact we chanced upon a campsite that was close to the Black Sheep Pub and Grill, was within walking distance of the first of three buses to catch to go downtown and had hot water galor but no showers. Pablo and I set up the portable shower and all who so desired filled the pink pail with water from the outdoor hot water tap and gloried in free cleanliness. Doing a small wash ... read more
