Jasper Revisited The Columbia Ice Field Highway, Jasper, Lake Louis and Banff are places to be revisited Fifteen years later the town is much as it was. The tourist office and the railroad station are in the same place; as are the tracks. The shops have increased in number and the facilities offered seem to have been extended. Only few views are familiar. The truck arrived early thru morning rain and after a rained on breakfast of eggs and toast. For a second night we had camped at the side of the road...this time on a logging trail. The fire was built in a sandy clearing where cut trees had already been burnt. The tents were pitched on the flatness of the road. Huge transports struggling up a mountain grade was the nightlong lullaby. A ... read more

After a cappuccino, and some WiFi time it was back on the truck and on the way to Lake Louise. We stopped at Lake Louise Mall to get info about bus travel for Jill who is returning to England. From the Mall Lake Louise was 45 min away to the lake and a ½ km to the camp site. This night was spent at a campsite inside an electrified fence. On the way to the showers a grizzly with two cubs was seen outside the electric fence. We all watched until it became dark. The bear count has reached over 20 since the beginning of the trip. The morning wakeup was early so that the 7:00 bus could be met by four of our group. I went with the truck so that I could have ... read more

Prince Rupert to Lake Louise Coming out of Alaska after Ketchikan was another long ferry ride with similar views and one small black dot that was supposedly a whale. Even the people with binoculars did not see much more. The Road from Prince Rupert to Prince George was again a continuation of wooded hills and snow capped peaks, BUT they were Canadian and therefore more beautiful to my eyes. It is the combination of sky, snow green Sitka spruce, spring green aspen and rushing Fraser River that made the whole spectacular. In 1972 the Fraser River flooded. This year the spring runoff is reaching record heights again. As we drove we noticed the river waters were so high that some trees and shrubs seemed to be growing out of the water. In some places fields ... read more

The Big Orange Truck While standing beside the Truck and speaking to a long haul driver that takes loads up to Prudhoe Bay I was told , “ that is a bus…I drive trucks,” It sure feels like a truck when you see what a lot of stuff it holds and how high off the ground it stands and that you have to climb a ladder to get up to the seats.. Twenty-three strangers met at Anchorage at the Duke Hotel. The Big Truck was waiting outside when I arrived by cab at the parking lot. Introductions were made all around and as names floated about in the air we all prepared to find space on the truck. Climbing the ladder to get into the truck proper at first was a bit tricky. It goes ... read more

May 12 to 15 Dalton Highway from Fairbanks north to Prudhoe Bay and south as far as Chena River State Park The Dalton Highway is 416 miles straight north of Fairbanks. Well not quite. The highway meanders along the Prudhoe Bay Pipeline, past mountain peaks draped in snow and stunted trees and lots of stones from small to big. The road is winding, steep, and kept up by the state of Alaska. It was built in 1974 in just 154 days. Crews moved from south to north meeting and then working again in another section. At this time of year all is frozen and fine brown silt covers the roadside and all that passes. Our truck, at the end of a run, is totally encrusted in the dusty sand including the spout from where we ... read more

May 17 Thursday 2007 Chicken ... Alaska ... What Happens in Chicken Stays in Chicken ... Therefore no names and few faces. The small town of Chicken sits near the Canadian border and has a permanent population of 9. During the summer this increases to over 50. Many tourists stop to experience the uniqueness of this tiny place. There is a saloon the size of a small bedroom and on either side of this are a restaurant and a gift shop. The woman that owns the place has been here for 15 years. A little further down is what seems a new enterprise that offers gifts, showers, RV hook-up, gold jewellery made by the proprietress, WiFi, and small snacks. Tents were erected on gravel or amongst the trees where one had to avoid wet mossy ... read more

Friday May 11 We have been in Denali Park since Wednesday night. An extended visit was planned so as to celebrate one of the groups 44th birthday. And it was done in style. Wednesday we stopped at Costco and bought all kinds of food … small chocolate bars, crackers, socks, warm clothes, roast beef, milk, liquor, beer, potatoes, stewing beef, pasta, bread and more…enough for the next few days…. Had to come to Alaska to go shopping at Costco and Wal-Mart! Twenty three people eating well involves a lot of planning and food. My cook team ….Pablo, Sue, and me with Karen orchestrating …. put together a feast for Thursday. We had the birthday dinner a day early for two reasons … one we had all day to cook and two the liquor had to ... read more
