A good thing has come to an end.... have spent 14 nights at Rs700 in the most excellent Afonso Guesthouse and have explored the surrounds of Panaji, also known as Panjim, mostly by local bus. Only at the end of the day when the heat has been too hot have I sometimes I succumbed to taking a taxi. Today was spent taking two busses there and two busses back to Chandor.... the place where the Barganza family built a beautiful colonial mansion. Members of the family still live in the house and to help with renovations and upkeep a minimum of Rs100 is asked to get a guided tour by an actual member of the house. The house is a showplace for old italian tiles, ming vases, handcarved rosewood furniture, family portraits, a private library comprising ... read more

This was a good place to get sick in....I am imagining what it would have been like to have to be sick in Kolkatta with the noise, the grime and the decrepidneess(sic) ............................................................... Have spent the last two days in my hotel room coughing and blowing and generally feeling too tired to be a tourist! Thank goodness Wendy has been able to amuse herself .......it became so uncomfortable that I had to visit a local doctor at 7:30 PM on a Sunday night!!. And he prescibed antibiotics, eyedrops (because my eye swelled up and was oozing), something for my unending headache and more benadryl ............ After two sets of pills I am already feeling better.....food is still a problem.....I think I have had one too many indian delicacies................... am looking forward to a gourmet meal in ... read more

The Afonso Guesthouse is situated on San Sabastian Road steps from San Sabastion Chapel. Contact Janette at 2222359 for reservations. Janette, the proprietress, is friendly, helpful, and keeps a very clean establishment of eight rooms starting at Rs700. At very reasonable prices, breakfast is served on the terrace at the top of the guesthouse and includes Goan bread, eggs, juice, jam, coffee, and tea served by two very able young girls, who work here. It is a pleasure to spend time in this family run establishment. The much anticipated experience of the very promoted market happened today. The Flea Market at Anjuna happens only on Wednesday..... every tourist of every description in every unspeakable form of dress and behavior was at the market. And every hawker times 10 was pushing the wares: bags, scarves, hannocks, bed covers, sarongs, jewellery, carved "marble?', mirrored skirts, side vented wrap around pants, fancy embroidered sort of quilted looking covers, pillow cases, shoes, sandles, incense, chess sets, round cloth lanterns for the patio, endless bangles, plastic posing as coral, alloy posing as silver, t-shirts, cotton shirts, skirts of every hue abd length ... and that is just the stuff I remember or walked past. I did not pass every stall! I did not loook at all the goods! The biggest challenge was getting from one end of ... read more

This is a bit of heaven, a paradise, and a place where one can breathe easy, drink a decent cup of coffee, enjoy south indian food, walk and shop, sit by the water, take a bus to the beach and rent a motorbike to scoot around and see the sites. Have done all of the above except the motorbike rental and will be going on the bus tomorrow. To get here was a bit arduous. The plane left Kolkata five minutes early and that should have served as an omen. The arrival in Mumbai was on time. After boarding a van to change terminals and pretending not to understand 'bakshish'(tip) from the guy who was told to take us to the van it was discovered that the 15:30 flight had been rescheduled for 20:00. So the ... read more

Including the week-end in the Sunderbans ...apparently spelled with an s according to newspaper and listing here in the computer .... the stay in Kolkata has lasted ten days. Ask me not what I have done Three days in the Delta, two days spent at cooking class, two days spent with new friends and that basically leaves only three days to see the sights. City tour by bus, Victoria Memorial, 31st Annual Book Fair, India Museum, railway refund and air ticket hassle, two visits to the GPO to mail things, making and visiting with new friends, finding places to eat like the reward lunch and the perfect cup of coffee... shopping for this and that ... email and blog updates....but no zoo or botanical garden. As I sit at the computer the sounds of yet another ... read more

Alive and well .... not eaten by tiger or crocodile.... survivor of boat trip and ship fare! Monday was spent at the apartment of a most pleasant lady whose husband is an architectand who teaches english. She cooked delectable Bengali food whose recipes she provided. The arrival was a bit early so an eye catching ramble thru a totally different layout of a market was engaged in. The market seemed to be under a roof but actually was in the alley between the houses. The fruits and vegetables were arrayed on raised surfaces in geometric order that were pleasing in an artistic sense. And the variety was mush greater. Being led by David from Koli Travel iot was impossible to linger for long. The exit came out onto a breath taking display of flowers in ... read more

February 1 2006 has come and gone and it has been a great day. After some discussion it was decided that we would stick with the devil we know and we have opted to remain at the Broadway Hotel at 27A Ganesh Chandra Ave. because the beds separate, I can hang up my laundry and it dries during the day, sitting in a room full of drinking smoking men will never soon happen again, and even though during this trip my backpack and I are having a better relationship it is not so good that I want to pack it together if I do not absolutely have to! The day began with breakfast and a read of the IndiaTimes...I had to cut out a few pieces; my favourite expression since arriving in India....OHMYGOD.... printed over a ... read more

We are in the heat now... and it is winter in India! Spent a day on a tourist bus roaming around the city. Had absolutely no idea wher we were except we were driving around the city past mentionable buildings which were pointed out on the right but were really on the left and mentioned after the crazed driver, who did not realize he had tourists on the bus who wanted to take shots of the places, had already lurched past aforementioned attraction. Every time the traffic stopped the bus it was beside a not so fragrant pile of rubbish that was either in the process of being picked through for someone's idea of a treasure or was being dumped into a three sided rectangular cement "storage" place or shovelled onto an already overflowing garbage truck.... ... read more
