We left our hotel this morning at 7:30 and 68 degrees with a long drive ahead of us…all the way to Oklahoma City. There was not much time for touristy things today. We had to save it for the memorial. And that is what we did. We were not on the road for five minutes when we crossed the Missouri River. The water was quite low and I wondered, how could the water be low on the Missouri River and high on the Mississippi. I haven’t a clue, but that was my observation. We crossed more corn fields today…huge farms. And we saw soy beans again, too. The plants were young and low to the ground and the leaves were flowing with the breeze, creating a wonderful shimmering effect over the field, of varying shades of ... read more

We got going early again today. We started out at 7:30 and 72 degrees and set out to find the Great River Byway and drive north on the west side to cover areas we did not see yesterday. The map that we obtained for the byway, showed that the road we needed to follow was Hwy 79, and it showed that this highway intersected I-70 just north of St. Louis, and so we headed off to find this intersection. Our hotel was about 15 miles west of the city, so we drove east. We drove east three times and back again. We never found this intersection. We even asked a policeman who was sitting in his cruiser by the side of a road. He could not find it either. Together we decided that the old Maine ... read more

We got an early start today, knowing that we had a long road ahead. The plan was to drive from Dubuque, IA to St. Louis, MO. So we got up early and set out at 7:25 and 70 degrees. And the temps actually got up to 91 before the day was through. It took us a few minutes to find the Great River Rd., but we finally did and we pointed the car south. It wasn’t long before we crested a hill and there she was, down in a lush, green valley, the Mighty Mississippi. We frequently had views of her from high on a hill as she flowed along. Again this morning, we were in rolling hills, sometimes high above the river and sometimes right there beside her, close enough to touch. And when we ... read more

We left Wausau this morning at 8 AM and 75 degrees. It turned out to be perfect weather. Most of the day the sun was shining, we had some clouds in the sky, and the temps were in the low 80’s. And for transplanted Floridians, that was perfect. We hit the road and headed west to Winona, Minnesota, where we planned to meet the Mississippi River. The three hour drive took us through the farmlands of Wisconsin. Where yesterday was flatlands, today was rolling hills of green and a feast for the eyes. It appeared to me that these farms were privately owned, unlike the ones we often see in states like Kansas, where farmhouses are miles apart. There were many farms with neat little homes sitting beside red barns and 3 or 4 or even ... read more

We hit the road at 8:20 and 64 degrees. Not to be fooled, however, the temps got up to 86 degrees before the day was over. So we dressed for a warm day, and a glorious day it was. We had bright sunshine most of the day, save the shower we drove through getting to our hotel, but that cleared quickly and the sun came out once again. Today we drove from Sault Saint Marie, MI to Wausau, WI. And there was much to see along the way. The route took us along the southern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The UP. Our drive began through country roads of heavy forests, where sights of life were few and far between. There was repeated evidence of forest fires, with acres of dead trees with black ... read more

It was cool last night and we slept well and awoke refreshed. We hit the road this morning at 8:15 and 63 degrees and pointed the car north then west to skirt the northern shore of the Georgian Bay. It was as difficult to leave Pat and Robin’s place as it was to leave our friends Bob and Gloria in Poland Springs, just a few days ago. Both of these homes on the lake are little pieces of heaven in an otherwise chaotic world, and we thoroughly enjoyed our respites before venturing off on another adventure. After about an hour of driving through winding country roads carved out of thickly treed forests with little apparent civilization, we made it to Trans Canadian Highway 69. The roads up here are smooth and well managed, with extra lanes ... read more

We left Ottawa at 8:24 and 66 degrees and steered the car west toward Huntsville, Ontario. Being on the west side of the city, it was an easy drive out. Soon we were riding through Renfrew, the birthplace of the NHL, back in 1909. The downtown area looks like small-town America, reminding me of my hometown in Maine. It is old, but charming with businesses lining the downtown streets, housed in 2 or 3 story buildings built in the early part of the last century. And the town seemed to be thriving, for we saw no empty storefronts. We drove through miles of farmlands teeming with golden wheat ready for harvest, young wheat striving to turn from green to yellow, soybean plants hugging the ground in lush leafy carpets of dark green and off, away from ... read more

Well here we go once again. It has been a year since our last road trip, and we are off for another adventure that will take us north to Cape Cod and to Maine, further north to Huntsville, Ontario, south along the Mississippi River, west across Colorado and all the way to Washington State, back up to Banff and Calgary and then, well, who knows at this point. We shall see what comes to be. As is true of every road trip, I set out with hesitation and trepidation. It is not easy to spend 24/7 together, most of it in the closed quarters of a car and a motel room. But so far, in all of our prior trips, we still have not killed each other, so I have confidence that we will return no ... read more

Geo: 28.3467, -81.4801My father always used to say that persistence pays off. And so it did. On 8/12/16, at 8:15 and 77 degrees we made our fourth attempt to see the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. In years past it was always hidden behind a thick curtain of fog and just driving safely through it to the other side was a challenge. This year it was sunny and clear and we saw it in all of its glory. The mountains, which do not rise above the tree line, are covered in a lush blanket of dark green trees. And the flatlands are teeming with wildlife. We saw a bear in a tree eating cherries and we saw deer grazing in fields of tall yellow grass. The drive took us through winding roads up and over hills ... read more

Geo: 35.7886, -83.5559With 520 miles to cover today and an hour to lose with a time change, we got up early and were out at 7:10 AM and 79 degrees with the car pointed east. We jumped back on I-64 and joined all the truckers who were monopolizing the road. No exaggeration, there were at least twice as many 18-wheelers as cars, probably 3-1. And so our journey was managed largely by the speed of these trucks and how much real estate they would allow us to have for ourselves. At one point, construction lowered the speed limit to 45 mph and that would have been fine, for the cars, but because of the trucks, we moved along at about 5 mph for many miles. On days like these, I start wishing that cargo would move ... read more
