Sunshine!!! We had a day full of sunshine, today!!! I’m feeling restored. We left the hotel this morning at 8:30 and 57 degrees and pointed the car toward the Canadian boarder. Yes, we are back in Canada for a few days. Our target was Kamloops, but the drive was going to get us there around noontime, so we had to find something else to do. I know…tough assignment, but we had to do it. We chose to follow the Fraser River north and it turned out to be a great choice. Yes, another river byway. Seems to be a theme here, Mississippi, Payette, Snake, Columbia, and now Fraser. It took about two hours to get to the border and cross over. The crossing was totally uneventful. There was a long line of cars waiting to cross ... read more

The skies are gray again today. The ceiling is low and weighing on my brain like a ton of bricks. I have no idea how people live up here in the northwest. The rain, the fog, the overcast skies…it is very depressing, and I found myself feeling the negative effects of it all day. We did get to see the sun peek out briefly, but it wasn’t enough for a Floridian used to seeing the sun every day. My mind and body have become used to having sunshine. If I lived up here, I would not thrive. Today made me glad we are moving out of this region and back eastward beginning tomorrow. We left the hotel this morning at 7:30 AM and 57 degrees. We decided to spend some time riding around Port Angeles. There ... read more

First let me begin with this. Today is Steve’s 70thbirthday. So, Happy Birthday, Steve. For a few weeks, you will be older than me. And I get to say that every year. Ok, so today we got going at 8:10 and 59 degrees. It was not promising to get much over 60 degrees, so it was really a long-pants and sweatshirt day. Course, that didn’t stop the people from around here. Many of them were running around in shorts and tees. Hopefully they noticed our license plate and understood. Today we went to Olympic National Park, which is on a big chunk of land west of Seattle, sticking out into the Pacific Ocean. We drove up the west side of the park and for a couple of hours we saw mostly forest, some of which was ... read more

We left our hotel this morning at 8 AM and 72 degrees and headed for a viewing of the spot where the Snake River flows into the Columbia River. We thought it would make for some nice photos. Well it was not to be. There was no way for us to get anywhere near that site and so, after driving around for a while, we gave up and moved on, having wasted almost an hour. So we drove to the Louis and Clark Highway, Hwy 14, which follows the Columbia River on the Washington State side. We drove along this road for about 80 miles, stopping at numerous pullouts and not once did we see a bridge. We were actually in the middle of nowhere, so I guess there was no need for a bridge. We left the hotel this morning at 8:22 and 70 degrees and headed out on another scenic ride. And what a ride it was. I begin by apologizing that my camera just does not do justice to what we saw today. We, as people, see everything in a 180 degree landscape and the camera only catches a small portion of that. In addition, there was a lot of smoke in the air again today. But I will say, that the first 4-5 hours of this drive are what I would characterize as eye-popping scenery. In fact, my “driver” was reduced to a one-word vocabulary all morning…”WOW”. I heard that over and over again. Later in the day, he expanded his vocabulary to “look at this”. And I heard that one again and again. So, I hope ... read more

Today we planned for a day of sightseeing and we were not disappointed. We left the hotel at 8:22 AM and a sunny 59 degrees. The weather was perfect and made the day very enjoyable. A few notes about our hotel. It was a large, brand new La Quinta located in the Shashone Indian Reservation. And half of the people in the hotel, which was sold out, were America Indians. The reason they were here was for the Shashone-Banneck Indian Festival Pow Wow. It is a yearly event where Indians from all over the country come to have a good time and compete in games and native dancing. We were lucky to get a room last night. In addition, there were about 30 firefighters. I guess this gives credence to the fact that the smoky air ... read more

Today was another moving day. We left Winter Park at 6:55 AM and 39 chilling degrees and headed for Idaho. We wore shorts today, believe it or not, because the temperature in Pocatello, ID was going to be 81 degrees. Thanks to my seat warmer, I was kept toasty warm all morning. The first leg of our trip took us west and then north and after half an hour, we were in the Arapaho National Forest and then the Routt National Forest. This was really what you might think of, when you think forest. The road took us through narrow alleys lined with Aspen, all standing tall, side-by-side, perfectly straight, with their picturesque white bark and delicate leaves fluttering in the breeze. For 120 miles, we saw fewer than a dozen cars and it occurred to ... read more

We decided to go to Estes Park today, which is on the east side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The weather was promising to rain, but we are here, and it is what it is, so we decided to go anyway. We left this morning at 9 AM and a chilly 52 degrees. The fastest route to Estes Park is a road that takes you west from Winter Park and north to the west entrance of Rocky Mountain NP and exits on the eastern side of the park. We have been to this park at least three times already, seeing it from both directions. So we were not expecting to see anything we had not seen before, but were we ever wrong. From where we are staying, it is a short 34 mile drive to the ... read more

We got up early again this morning and headed out for Winter Park, Colorado. We left at 7:42 and 63 degrees and headed west. Since the drive to Winter Park was less than three hours, we decided that we would do some Colorado sightseeing first. There certainly is plenty to see here, if you are into scenery and mountains, and we are. However, there was a lot of haze/smog/fog/smoke/clouds in the sky today. I am not sure what was hanging up there, but it interfered with the view and resulted in photos that are less than spectacular. The State of Colorado web site tells me that there are wild fires in NW Canada and NW United States and that the smoke is causing haze in Colorado. So, I have to believe that it was a combination ... read more

Today is Scott’s birthday. Happy Birthday to my first born. Mom sends her love. Today was a moving day. We did lots of driving and not much sightseeing. We left Oklahoma City this morning at 7:55 and 77 degrees and pointed the car west. Our route took us through the western part of Oklahoma, the pan handle of Texas, through the northeastern part of New Mexico and up into Colorado, landing in Pueblo, 550 miles later. The sun was shining when we left. The sky was a bright blue with big cotton balls of cumulus clouds and large swaths of white, like a paintbrush had made expansive strokes across the sky, and from my pilot days, I knew it meant that the winds aloft were very strong. This is great if you are flying in the ... read more
