Geo: 47.1219, -88.57So happy to leave this hotel in Sault Ste. Marie, we headed out at 8:15 AM and 63 degrees and pointed the car west. We chose the scenic drive on the UP (Upper Peninsula) along the southern side of Lake Superior, and charming it was. We passed through many towns where you could shop at Mel's Fireworks, eat at Pickles Bar and Grill or Wilcox Fish House Restaurant, and gamble your fortunes away at Bay Mills Casino. The drive took us through the countryside along Whitefish Bay. Our first stop was at Lighthouse Point Iroquois where we met Doug, the caretaker. The lighthouse is no longer operational, but it is still open for visitors in the museum and gift shop and, if you are game, a climb to the top of the lighthouse to ... read more

Geo: 46.5123, -84.3528This entry is a consolidation of 4 days, 7/27/16 – 7/30/16.We left Ottawa at 8:20 and 73 degrees on the 27th and headed for Huntsville, Ontario to visit our good friends Pat and Robin and spend a few days at their lakeside home. It took us about 4 hours to get there. The drive was mostly through the countryside…farms of golden wheat and corn fields in flower as evidenced by a yellow haze hovering over the dark green stalks. In a town called Renfrew we saw an unusual sight. Waiting to enter the highway was a black carriage being pulled by a beautiful dark brown horse. Inside the carriage were two women dressed in long black dresses with black bonnets on their heads. And we decided they had to be Amish. And it was ... read more

Geo: 45.4214, -75.6919Today was another travel day. We left the hotel in Edmundston (just over the border from Madawaska, Maine) at 8:45 AM and 64 degrees and headed west toward the Saint Lawrence Seaway. We had eight hours of traveling to do to make it to Ottawa in time for Beamer's dinner hour. Fortunately, we gained an hour when we drove back into the eastern time zone, and it served us well, because we hit a couple of pockets of traffic in Montreal and Ottawa. But we landed within reason of our goal and Beamer did not complain.Oh, remember the fly? As soon as we got into the car this morning, guess what? He was still there. He spent the night in the car and was ready to travel with us again this morning. Well…I wasn't ... read more

Geo: 47.3737, -68.3251Today was moving day. We moved from PEI west making our way toward Huntsville, Ontario where we will visit for a few days with friends at their lake cottage. (It's really a 4 bedroom house, but they call it a cottage.) So, we left Charlottetown at 8:20 AM and 68 degrees. Before leaving the area, we decided to check out Rocky Point, which is a peninsula on the other side of Charlottetown Harbour. When we stopped to take photos, several cows made it clear that they wanted our attention, so we spent a little time visiting with them. Beamer thought they were interesting until he decided that barking was a more appropriate response to the fact that they were approaching our car. We then drove along the Gulf of St. Laurence on our way ... read more

Geo: 46.2365, -63.1282We left our hotel in Charlottetown at 8:35 AM and 72 degrees and headed off to the east side of the island. As was the case in previous days, we had to navigate manually. I am not sure if the data base in the GPS is as bad as it seems or whether it is the satellite connection up here that is not good. But, for someone who made a career designing ways to use the newest computer technologies, it is hard for me to accept doing things the way things have been done for hundreds of years, but it is what it is.So off we went, map on my lap. The weather today was wonderful, in the mid 70's and sunny. We chased the harbors along the coast following narrow and oft times ... read more

Geo: 46.2365, -63.1282Today was moving day. We checked out of our hotel in New Glasgow and headed for Prince Edward Island for 2 days. We left at 8:20 and 68 degrees and headed west after studying the maps, arguing with Miss GPS and deciding that the only way to get where we were going, the way we wanted to get there, was to use the map and the road signs, so that is what we did. And for the most part, we did quite well, only missing a turn twice all day. We took the scenic route on the north side of Nova Scotia to the Confederation Bridge that spans the Northumberland Straight. It is 13 km or about 8 miles long and takes about 12 minutes to cross. There was no toll going over, but ... read more

Geo: 45.5918, -62.6434The plan for today was to visit the eastern part of Cape Breton, so off we went at 8:15 AM and 66 degrees. We put Sydney, which is located on the northeast side of the island, into the GPS and at some point she said we would be on Route 4, which was exactly the route we wanted to follow because it hugs the coastline. But after we crossed the bridge onto the island, she pulled a switch on us and sent us up inland highway 2. Because the road signs leave something to be desired, we didn't realize it until it was too late to turn back. So goes the best laid plans…they never seem to happen the way you want them to. So we modified our plan and decided that we would ... read more

Geo: 45.5918, -62.6434We had a bit of a late start this morning. Since we are staying at this hotel for three nights, I thought we would slow down the pace a bit. So I let Steve sleep when he was dozing, but he also let me sleep while I was dozing. So we got up late. LOL We left the hotel at 8:35 AM and 64 degrees and we headed east toward Cape Breton. We had definite plans for a route today, but the GPS was lost most of the time and we could not seem to read the maps correctly. Consequently, we changed plans twice. However, you really can't make the wrong decision. There is water everywhere with wonderful views. There is road work, BIG TIME, going on everywhere, but I will say, for the most ... read more

Geo: 45.5918, -62.6434Well, I have to admit to being tired yesterday. After catching up on a week's worth of record keeping and writing 2 blog entries last night, working until after 11 PM, I clearly missed something. I realized this morning that I didn't even talk about Saint John. My bad. So, I will begin where I left off.Saint John is a large city with a very large working harbor. When I planned this trip, I was expecting it to be a small touristy area, but that is not the case. The port is very large, very active and very industrial. We struggled to find a place to get close to the water for some photos and, as you can see from the photos I posted, our success was limited. We had to drive a long ... read more
