I´m here in Lima, quickly reminded of what a south american city was like, dirty, smoggy, horns honking all the time, humid and smelly. The trip down went pretty smoothly, met lots of other travellers going to destinations all over the continent with lots of interresting travel plans. One suggestion I would have is to not do a flight connection through Mexico City. That airport is rediculous, I must´ve gone through 5 security checkpoints, had my bags searched twice, was patted down a couple times as well and then they put us in front of an infrared sensor which showed your body on this big screen and your temperature to ensure you don´t have the flu. We arrived at 6 am, it was a nice time to arrive before the city fully wakes up. Time to ... read more

Again, time just seems to fly by in the travels. It seems it's been a while since letting you know where i'm at. The last entry I was in Targus Mures, a nice, but random town in Transylvania. The hostel was kind of iffy, strange people living in that building, and I was the only one there, heck, probably the only tourist in the town, as people seemed to frequently remind me. After my night in there, I jumped on a minibus hoping to get up to Praid and see the salt mine which everyone seems to talk to. Much to my surprise it was well below zero and blowing snow in the morning, which only got worse as the minibus maneuverred up the mountain road to Sovata (the base town to get to Praid from). ... read more

Wow time is really flying. Vienna was wonderful, what a beautiful city. I ended up spending two nights there, one just wasn't enough, there were so many sights to see and galleries to wander, saw some van gogh paintings and climt paintings and so many more. On the second night I thought it being the city of music and arts, that i would attend one of the jewish music festival gigs and get some local culture. So much for the local culture, the first act was a guy from california, and the second was a group from montreal. Argh. It was good though. From Vienna it was back on a train to Budapest, there as well, thinking one night was enough was a stupid thought. Budapest is another beautiful city, a little dirtier, a little smoggier, ... read more

All I need is to start selling shower rings. So, its been a busy few days. Olomouc was Fantastic!!! with a capital F. The hostel felt like you were in someones super cozy living room, with good music and a great company. The town is basically a small Prague without all the tourists, even has an astronomical clock. Student town, so lots of young people with lots of energy. I decided that I wanted to take it easy at night, we heard there was a jazz club with a polish group playing.... the best live jazz i´ve heard. Tried to buy their cd but they were all sold out. There was a small cover charge for the band which is fine, but when i got the bill for the beer, i almost dropped. Katherine, you would ... read more

Wow, two nights in Prague went by real quick. Arriving into town from the airport (which only took 20 minutes from the baggage claim - super efficient) I was suddenly greeted by the beauty of that town. The energy and vibe was flowing out of all who were around, smiling faces and loud laughter. That town was built for good times. There are more pub/restaurants serving great czech beers than I could even count. The fun in Prague had to end though, today I ventured onto a train for a trip to Olomouc, supposedly the other historic capital in Czech Rep. More of a student town, with very few tourists, haven't even seen a postcard yet. Time though to find a place to put the sore feet up and have a meel. Quick touring tomorrow before ... read more

I must be getting old!!! Only a week of guinness indulgence and i'm ready for a break from the drink. It's been a good week, the usual amount of pubs and bars and an a huge amount of guinness, in fact, I figured I had 16 pints on Friday. Ugh, the kidneys/liver/bladder can't be happy with me right now. It's been great to see all the folks here, all the new babies and the old babies are now kids. Of course I managed to get myself to a shooting range, did some nice over/under shotgun clay pigeoning and a couple pistols. Tomorrow it's on a plane to europe, looking forward to it, still haven't planned any real itinerary, so it'll just have to be where my feet and the trains take me. ... read more

Yesterday, I spend the majority of the day in town working on my plans for hitting the continent. Unfortunately the plan of buying a car will probably not come to fruition due to problems registerring it. It just happenned that the owner of the used car company that i was looking at is from Dublin, so the second i mentioned i was here drinking guinness, he openned up and spilt all his information on me. So a train trip it will be. Due to the stressful planning situation I found myself in yesterday, a guinness was definitely in order..... but having one is a bit of a problem. So, it was the ol' saying......'One more than I gotta go' from about 4 pm until 3 am. Geez i'm hurting and the weekend hasn't even started yet. ... read more

I arrived without a hitch, a relatively easy time flying considering that i had a seat which folded flat into a bed, more alcohol than I needed and a belly full of saltspring island goat cheese, lamb shank ossobuco, and nicely grilled arctic char. Darren was there to meet me at the airport, smile and hug at the ready. Straight to the pub!! 2 Guinness and a traditional 'farm bake' and i was totally ready for a nap before the pub quiz night. Met up with the weekly quizzers in the corner pub 'Vaughns' for all out competition. We were a fairly strong team with two previous wins in their belts (the prize is a 50 euro bar tab). 4 Guinness into it we were stuck on question #19, which I wore badly after the answer ... read more
