Asia January 19th 2011

Before heading back down south to just outside Bangkok we spent a couple of hours riding on elephants and rafting down a river on a bamboo raft. Apparently, the same location in which they shot some scenes for Ramboo 4. Back onto another sleeper train for a all night trip south! Starting to like these night trains, feels like a big sleep over! Nothing like arriving at our next stop (sorry don't have the name in front of me) at 5am! Funny thing was I thought we would be the only one's walking around but there was quite a bit of activity taking place including a market filled with people. After dropping off our luggage is a few shared rooms we got cleaned up, ate breakfast and prepared for a day of biking around the town. ... read more

Asia January 19th 2011

I am losing track of the days, even with a watch on half the time, most of us don't know (and perhaps don't care) what day it is... only now that we are getting closer to the end of our tour do days become important. I see I have not finished my last blog regarding my jungle trek so time to do some updating of which there is a lot... The new years celebration...what to say it was rather surreal, we are in the middle of a jungle with no power, no tv's, yet they made sure they had chang beer and cold sodas for us to buy! Trust me after 3+ hours of trekking with a porter's pack on my back I would have gladly paid $10 for a beer, but settled on $1.50 x ... read more

And so it begins....the GAP tour......Hike, Bike and Kayak through parts of Thailand with 14 other crazies from around the world. Where to start? With our more then capable local guide Neung we have been quite busy, which included exploring Khao San Market in Bangkok, a mountain bike trip through the windy alleyways and streets of old Bangkok, and just returned from 3 days trekking through the land of the hill tribes north of Chiang Mai. Now in Chiang Mai for a few more hours waiting for laundry to be folded, mini tours to end and me to wake up then off we go again on another overnight train back south near Bangkok for our next adventure.. Not sure how to explain Bangkok, of what I have seen it has all the modern conveniences of a ... read more

Asia January 8th 2011

Now this is when I wish my backpack hadn't been misplaced in Hong Kong at the start of my journey, because I could easily have spent two more days in Ko Tao just chillin. No necessarily diving, but chillin. The ferry ride over there was sketchy at best with a few getting sick, however coming back the seas were rather calm in my mind, but we were bobbing up and down a bit, which seemed too much for some, there were plastic bags being handed out like it was Halloween! Love the sea myself, in fact during my only day of diving thus far, our rather large dive boat was getting tossed around quite a bit in the rough seas. Loved it! The first dive took us out to Southwest Pinnacle (about 30min cruise off Ko ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao January 6th 2011

The night before Ko Tao was an indicator of what the morning would be like, rain, rain, and more rain. While waiting in the hotel lobby for the mini-bus a group of us got to watch a "lady of the night" or that is what I took from what I saw. Her companion the night before had apparently stiffed the hotel, but not before cleaning out the stocked bar fridge. She was left "holding the bag"......night security, Chewang Police, hotel staff and 6 curious lookers, got to watch it all unfold. Too bad my minibus arrived. I had $20baht riding on her running from the police through the streets of Chewang. I love any type of boat ride so a high speed ferry to Ko Tao, via a stop off in Ko Phangan had me all ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui January 5th 2011

No sure how to explain Ko Samui, in particular the Town of Chewang. I am arrived at the tail-end of the holiday season, which means the tourists (pretty much all of Europe by my count) were partying it up one last time. I think the only way to explain it is to just say....youth, drinking, massages, food, great food, rain, beach, lounge chairs, wishing balloons, rave, apple flavored smokers, sensory overload.....Chewang, Ko Samui in a nutshell! I arrived in Ko Samui around 6pm via a flight from Phuket, spent the night, mostly awake wondering. Up at 6am to catch a minibus to the ferry dock on my way to Ko Tao for some hopefully excellent diving.... read more

Amazing how much one can do in a day....then again the day seems to be a combination of many days all rolled into one.... Happy to report my backpack has arrived (granted it went to my old hotel, which as luck would have it I had just arrived at to check and 30 sec. later a truck pulls up with my clean clothes! Sad to report I have packed way too much and am going to have to make some tough decisions....what articles will no longer continue on my travels. Now for the exciting part... i am still alive! (sorry Mom you may want to stop reading this section) I took the scooter out for a little spin. Actually I went on a road trip to south parts of Phuket to check out other beaches and ... read more

Just came across this sad story....http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2011/01/03/16748581.html. Yes I too was at the Phuket airport, but a day after the accident. The roads are chaotic to say the least, so those are the chances one takes....thankfully my shuttle driver got our group to Patong Beach all in one piece. Too funny I shared the ride with a fellow Canuck who is presently living in Jakarta and doing some geo work for an international oil/gas firm. He is taking a month off to travel....cool stories. Hasn't been back to Canada in over 3 years and loving his life. Now back to the craziness, decided to rent a scooter (I have been walking way too much in cheap sandals and my feet need a rest) for the day to check out some beaches further down the coast, quieter, less ... read more

How to keep oneself busy between the hours of 1am and 8:30am in Chiangi Airport in Singapore???? Squirrel!!
