Africa » Madagascar June 19th 1998

The year was 1998 and life was getting a bit hectic and we needed to get away and we could manage a two week break. Our sons by now were teenagers. Which destination could we choose? Somewhere with a beach and sea, was the general consensus. Mauritius? No, we felt it too commercialised for our taste, besides Paul and I had been there already. But so many other suggestions turned out to be above our price range. Paying for four people can really stretch the budget. Eventually after much deliberation we decided on Madagascar. Why on earth Madagascar? Well, so the story goes: Some months before this, I found an advertisement in a newspaper: Electrician required on Indian ocean island 6 month contract.... Tempting as it was, Paul said, if he wasn't married, with children and ... read more

Europe May 31st 1993

UK & Europe, May 1993 Conclusion: In a sense this was a trip of a life time. Although we have travelled a fair amount since then, we have never seen so many countries - 7 countries in less than two weeks, in one holiday again as well as fitting in the business part of our trip in Germany and Holland and visiting family in the UK and sightseeing in London. A total of 1 month of travelling and work. Paul and I often joke that when we retire we are going to hire a motor home and amongst other things, follow the Tour de France and travel around Europe. Who knows if this dream will come true....then again, maybe we will just leave the TdF out of this for now! Would we go with a tour ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London May 29th 1993

UK & Europe, May 1993 London again...this time we had a bit longer to explore - two days instead of one. No visit is complete without looking at the changing of the guards. So much pomp and ceremony! Paul's highlight though was watching the sidelines: the best part for him was watching the new guards preparing for the changing of the guards and being inspected before marching off to the palace. We had pre-booked tickets for another musical, this time at the Drury Lane Theatre - Miss Saigon. Just as spectacular as Phantom of the opera, with the highlight being the ‘evacuation’ of the last Americans by helicopter – it was quite realistic, considering . In true form of the rest of our tour, we went for another cruise: this time on the Thames. Along the ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Amsterdam May 28th 1993

UK & Europe, May 1993 This was our 2nd visit to Amsterdam as well. We stopped over for business previously for a couple of days, before heading to London. Monnickendam just outside Amsterdam was where we stayed and we both enjoyed walking around the streets. It is like a mini Amsterdam with its canals and bridges. Today it is a small fishing village but was an important port around the 15th century. The next day we went to another tourist trap – to learn a bit and look at Delft pottery. Interesting and beautiful, but of course, you were expected to buy something. We bought a tiny plate to remind us of our visit. Then we went on a canal cruise through Amsterdam. Another laid back way of seeing some of the city. I was thankful ... read more

Europe » Germany May 27th 1993

UK & Europe, May 1993 Return trip to Germany! Only two weeks ago we were in Bavaria on business, now we were back again and would be seeing other parts of Germany. We seemed to have rejuvenated our energy and set forth with vigour. Maybe it was the Rhine cruise that revived us. Such a pity it was only for a few hours and not a couple of days, but it gave us a taste of what it's like - beautiful scenery all around with some interesting towns that we saw from afar and once again we felt that it would be wonderful to return one day and tour through Europe at leisure. In Munich I could show Paul a bit of what I saw when I went there on my own for the day, while ... read more

Europe » Austria » Tyrol » Innsbruck May 26th 1993

UK & Europe, May 1993 Can't remember much about Innsbruck or maybe it is because we didn’t spend so much time there. I think by this stage we were all reaching saturation point for all the sight seeing we had done up till now. By now we had been through 3 countries and so many cities and towns in about 7 days, that we needed a breather. This includes all the travelling time from London through all the countries we had seen thus far. But of course we didn't sit still - you can't let an opportunity like this go wasted. We walked around the town and saw the Golden roof - a landmark of Innsbruck constructed for Emperor Maximilian to watch tournaments in the square below. We also visited a most beautiful church, the Innsbruck ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 25th 1993

UK & Europe, May 1993 Left Florence and headed for Venice. Venice gives off an air of elegance, yet there is much ruin and decay when you look closely. We went to a glass blowing factory and saw the most amazing creations of glass ware. True craftsmanship. I have always had a romantic notion of Venice in my mind. A romantic gondola trip through the canals with my husband by my side, whispering endearing words of love in my ear.......That notion was quickly squashed with no hope of romance from my better half! He was too busy looking through the lens of our video camera all the time. But we did get to glide through the canals on a gondola and I enjoyed every minute of it. I could get used to this mode of transport! ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 24th 1993

UK & Europe, May 1993 After Rome we headed back towards Florence. We had driven past it on our way to Rome, but did not stop there. Tuscany, the bit we saw through the windows of the bus was beautiful. Once we arrived in Florence, we went to a few tourist traps but I must admit we found it very interesting: - Accademia di Belle Arti ("Academy of Fine Arts") where we saw the statue of David done by Michelangelo. According to experts the Academy has housed the original David since 1873. Naturally there were other fine arts to enjoy too. - a leather shop. So tempting to buy something made of such soft leather, but of course the price was far beyond what we could afford. Alas, all we could do was just touch that ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome May 23rd 1993

May 1993 U.K. & Europe After leaving glorious Switzerland we headed for Italy & Rome. Italy certainly was different to Switzerland. Italy felt far more historical for me. I was disappointed we couldn't go to Pisa but fortunately we saw so much else. There were moments of nostalgia, with memories of looking at my parents and god-parents photographs and slides when I was still a child, dreaming of the day that I would see the same places and here I was looking at so many of the same landmarks! Fountain of Trevi - the largest Baroque fountain in Rome is so beautiful, but I don't know if I should believe in it's traditional legend. Apparently if visitors throw a coin into the fountain you will return to Rome - we threw a coin in and haven't ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-West » Lucerne May 22nd 1993

May 1993 Europe & U.K. Driving towards Switzerland from Paris, via Beaune and Basel, we started noticing the colour of the rivers changing. A beautiful blue, rather than a muddy brown. Entering Switzerland was like entering another world. Everything about Switzerland seemed so clean and fresh, steep green slopes and forests. Paul even vouched for the water from the rivers after going for a run while we were there. We first went to Luzern and walked over the Chapel Bridge, amazing to think that this bridge was originally built in 1333. We were fortunate to have seen it before much of it had to be replaced after a fire in August 1993. There were interesting paintings inside the bridge depicting some of Lucerne's history from the 17th century. Next onto another tourist trap to look at ... read more
