Europe and United Kingdom Paris - May 1993. When we planned our trip to Europe we decided it was best to use a tour company. We only had about two weeks at our disposal and felt we would see so much more of Europe by doing a bus tour. The tour company was Trafalgar tours and the tour would last for 12 days, driving through 8 countries. Early start – up before the crack of sparrow’s fart for five o' clock departure from London. We headed for Dover to board a ferry to Calais. We had breakfast on the ferry and before we knew it we touched the shores of France. After we docked at Calais we drove to Paris where we were going to spend the first two nights. I remember seeing old war bunkers ... read more

Europe and United Kingdom Trip - May 1993 We departed from Manchester in the morning, to fly to London and arrived at 9.30 at Heathrow airport. To get to our hotel we took our first trip on the London underground to Kings Cross and booked into our hotel which was close by. That was easy! We had never before travelled on an underground train, but from the airport to our hotel it was not complicated and was great. What to do in London in less than 24 hours? Such a difficult choice. We were departing on a tour early the next morning so we had limited time. To make matters more difficult we had pre-booked and paid for a matinee show from home which cut into the day as well. How do you choose what to ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom May 19th 1993

Back to May 1993 and our Europe & United Kingdom trip. Amsterdam, Bavaria and work done and dusted, Paul was officially on holiday now and time to move on to the United Kingdom to meet up with family. All our flights for this trip was on Lufthansa, so we flew from Amsterdam back to Frankfurt and then on to Manchester. Paul's sister and brother-in-law met us at the airport and we drove to Darwin where they live. It was so good to see Karen & Clive after so many years and as we were only spending three days with them and their son and daughter, we had to make the most of it. So much catching up to do, so we chatted non stop in the car. What struck us first was the narrow roads, lovely ... read more

Europe and United Kingdom Trip - May 1993 After spending five days in Bavaria, we flew to Amsterdam where we were going to stay for two days. As we approached Schipol airport, I looked out of the plane window and saw swathes of colour from the tulips growing in Holland - so colourful and brought to mind the old song "Tulips from Amsterdam". Such a cliché, I know, but couldn't help myself. From the airport we caught a train to the centre of Amsterdam. This was the first time I had ever seen a ‘double decker’ train, but unfortunately we didn’t get to travel in one. We dragged our very large suitcases (on wheels) from the station to our hotel - Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, courtesy of the company that Paul worked ... read more

Europe and United Kingdom Trip - May 1993 Family and everyday life took over for a while until we could combine a business trip with a holiday in Europe and visit family in the UK. This was the REAL thing! I was going to places that I had only seen before in photographs of other family members travels. A lifetime opportunity for us that we thought we would never have again. But I was torn between excitement and torment. This time I would be the one leaving someone behind - our young sons of about 9 & 7. It would be for an entire month. When I look back, I cannot believe I did that! Fortunately my sister, who sacrificed so much to do it, could look after them, and there is no one else I ... read more

Africa » Mauritius June 25th 1983

June 1983 A couple of months after we were married we moved up to Johannesburg from Cape Town for better work opportunities. Exciting to live in another city but sad at the same time to say goodbye to our home town, Cape Town with its beautiful mountains and sea. After much adjusting, hard work and settling down and a couple of years later, it was time for our next annual holiday and we decided to be daring and go to Mauritius. This was our first holiday abroad! Admittedly it was really just going to be a beach holiday, but it was quite a big step for us in those days to venture out of our country! Preparations began. Excitement building up. It's the middle of winter, how could we consider packing costumes and light summer clothing ... read more

January 1981 Not long after my trip to the Drakensberg I met Paul and my holiday dreams were replaced by dreams of a wedding. I was so happy because I was gaining a wonderful friend, husband and travel companion all in one! We wanted to go somewhere special on our honeymoon. Money was tight as usual and most of our savings went into the wedding, but we scraped together some money to spend on our holiday. We chose to camp at a holiday resort in Plettenberg Bay, a small upmarket coastal holiday destination. Paul had been there every year for his annual holiday for most of his life and had fond memories of it and he wanted to share it with me. We wanted to make it a worthwhile trip so we went for a few ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Eastern Cape » Port Elizabeth December 15th 1977

No travel plans at the moment, so let's start from the beginning. How did my passion for travelling start? My first memories of travel stories? Spending evenings with my god parents showing us slides of their travels and then showing us all the treasures they bought along the way. How I drooled and wished that one day I would be fortunate to do the same. Slides of exotic places that they had been to, being projected on walls. This was in the days when it was more common practice and probably more economical to show slides rather than photographs. With almost life size images, at least to my young eyes, looking so enticing and interesting, I started dreaming of going on my own travels. I still had a long way to go though, as I had ... read more
