Today we slept in a little before we joined the group for breakfast. It was very fun to wait for Natalie in the dining room as she is very sunny in the morning. We had our breakfast as Natalie hugged the cat figurine in the dining room. After breakfast we packed the car and then made our plans for the day. We decided to walk down as a group to see the baby lambs that Celia, our B&B owner, had adopted. Celia gave us four bottles of milk to feed them. We were all very excited to get to feed the lambs, especially Natalie. When we got to the pen, the lambs could tell we had the milk and they were fighting fiercely to get a spot. Natalie and Amy fed the littlest lamb and when ... read more

On Sunday, we got ourselves moving early in order to make it to 9am mass. We met Tommie and Bernie at mass and in true Irish style the mass was over very quickly. Tommie then proceeded to give us the town tour…. This included a stop at the Flynn & O’Dea Family graves, a walk down main street where the Flynn Family Butcher shop was and over to the park. Tommie is a great tour guide and we heard lots of stories about my grandfather when he lived here. After our tour, we headed to the B&B for a quick freshening up and then met back up with the whole crew for lunch at 1pm. We were again eating at the Templemore Arms Hotel, as that is the only joint in town. Lunch was delicious and ... read more

We woke a little later than normal today since we had a late night out in the Dublin pubs. We stayed at the Glenkeen house in Inchicore, just outside Dublin. This was a very lovely B&B, which is owned by a relative of someone we know from Syracuse. Glenkeen house is undergoing some kitchen renovations, so we stopped for breakfast at the Red Cow Inn. Our breakfast was lovely and just what the doctor ordered after a late night out. We got ourselves on the road to Templemore around 11am. The road from Dublin to Templemore was pretty good and we had a smooth ride most of the way. Once in Templemore, we headed in the general direction of the B&B and ended up on a back road when the hedgerows looked like they were going ... read more

After a night filled with the sounds of street noise and drunks, we got ourselves up and ready. At this point, I think we need to address a common issue that we have seen in Ireland. Leprechaun showers! Most of the B&B’s that we have stayed in have had these types of showers. A leprechaun shower in very small and typically does not allow you to turn around or bend once inside. This takes a little practice, and I think we have all mastered the technique at this point in the trip. The only problem is if you drop the soap…basically you are screwed…. This is probably why soap on a rope was invented. Our shower at the Helga Lodge was a typically leprechaun shower with an added bonus. The seal on the door was faulty ... read more

We all slept well at the Drummnd hotel and woke to the sound of owls outside our window. We put ourselves together and got our breakfast. Eileen tried fried soda bread and decided to stick with the regular toast from now on. We packed the car and headed back into to Derry. With the excellent directions from the hotel front desk attendant we ended up finding the walking tour meeting place early. We were able to make a stop at the bank and Starbucks before the tour started. Our walking tour was led by Garvin. He was a smart chap with a great sense of humor. He was a little hard to understand as the accent in Northern Ireland is very thick and reminds me of a Scottish accent. Garvin gave us a tour inside the ... read more

We started off the morning with a breakfast and a gorgeous view out of the front window of the Stonecroft B&B. The breakfast was not as good as we have had in the past few days, but it was a start. I am not sure but I think the breakfast didn’t taste as well because my stomach was upset from sleeping the entire night while inhaling the smell of old pee. I believe that the person who had the room before me must have had a great night at the pub and then missed the toilet completely. After a little fussing around to try to get the blog updated, our first stop was at W.B. Yeats grave in DrumCliffe, just a few miles from our B&B. Yeats was buried outside of the small church that his ... read more

After our late night pub crawl, it was hard to get out of bed today. We finally made it thru the shower and down for breakfast. Siobhan did not disappoint this morning and our breakfast was delicious. We gathered our things and Eammon checked us out of Taur Beg. Eammon was a great Irish character and I think he wanted us to stay and chat with him for awhile. We got ourselves together and on the road. We headed back thru Rossaveel towards Connemara. We decided that today would be Holy Day, or the day we would hit some of Ireland’s most well-known Catholic hot spots. It so happened that many of these were within the beautiful Connemara region in the upper western part of the country. Connemara is known for the marble that is excavated ... read more

This morning, Siobhan made us a wonderful breakfast. Taur Beg is the largest B&B we have stayed in to date. She gave us a menu so we could choose our breakfast for a change. Since I was looking for such a change, I had French toast for breakfast….it was delicious! After packing our day trip bags, we set out for Rossaveel. Rossaveel is a small port near Galway where the ferries to the Aran Islands depart. We arrived at the port around 9:30 for our 10:30 ferry. We boarded the boat early and found ourselves a nice table to sip some tea during the ride. This ferry company is owned by the villagers of Innishmore, which is a small island off the west coast of Ireland. The island has approximately 800 residents and is famous for ... read more

We asked fr our breakfast early this morning, but we still ended up late for mass. My mother arranged a special mass in memory of my grandmother and all the deceased members of the Brennan Family. My grandmother passed away 5 years ago. She died only 4 days after we returned from our last visit to Ireland. My mother spent several hours with her the day after we returned telling her about Cross and all her nieces and nephews. We believe that she was waiting to hear that everything back home was alright before she passed away. The mass started promptly at 9:30 and was over before 10am. The priest was very efficient and was not on the Irish time standard we had seen previously... where things started 2-3 hours after they were scheduled. :) After ... read more

Today, Teresa O'Gorman of the hilltop B&B greeted us with a large pot of tea and a huge Irish Breakfast. I am not used to eating that much in the morning, but it was a wonderful treat. We tried to use our international cell phone to call our friend Michael O'Dea, but we couldn't get through. Michael's sister Collette lives in Syracuse and Michael has been to visit us in Syracuse and we promised we would stop and see him on this trip. It ended up that he was 'just up the road' from our B&B. We stopped in unannounced and were welcomed by not only Michael, but his daughter and her family. We had a nice visit with them and played with Michael's granddaughter Rocine(1.5 years). After a spot of tea, we decided to try ... read more
