Today, Teresa O'Gorman of the hilltop B&B greeted us with a large pot of tea and a huge Irish Breakfast. I am not used to eating that much in the morning, but it was a wonderful treat. We tried to use our international cell phone to call our friend Michael O'Dea, but we couldn't get through. Michael's sister Collette lives in Syracuse and Michael has been to visit us in Syracuse and we promised we would stop and see him on this trip. It ended up that he was 'just up the road' from our B&B. We stopped in unannounced and were welcomed by not only Michael, but his daughter and her family. We had a nice visit with them and played with Michael's granddaughter Rocine(1.5 years). After a spot of tea, we decided to try to take the coast road to see some sights. On our last visit to cross, we missed this road..... and we were amazed at the views. The cliffs are unspoiled and beautiful here. I spent a good amount of time with my face behind the camera and had to be pulled away. We decided it was time for a visit to the Brennan Household. My
maternal grandmother was born in Cross and her house is still in the family. We stopped in to see if anyone was around, since it only used as a summer house now. My mother's cousin Johnny visits the farm daily to care for his cattle, but has a house 40 minutes away. We arrived at the house to find Johnny, Teresa, Leslie, and Pa (Patrick) doing some odd jobs. We were quickly invited in and given a feast of tea and pastries. We chatted away for atleast an hour on family history and catching up on everyone's families. We decided to head out and take the 'high road' to see the Bridges of Ross and Loophead. On our last trip, this was my FAVORITE place. We spent a few hours milling around and taking pictures before we headed back to the beach town of Kilkee. In Kilkee, we stopped by the grocery store and then met up with my aunt, uncle and cousins who had just landed in Ireland. They were exhausted, but we grabbed a meal together and then took them back to the B&B via the coast road. After a quick freshening up, we headed for downtown Cross
Bridges of Ross
Less than 1mile away from the family home for the night activities associated with the Loophead Gathering festival. We arrived early by Irish standards(8:30pm) and found a seat. After about an hour the derby races started in the street, and soon townfolk were pushing buggies(stollers) and wheelbarrows up the main street of cross. After several heats, winners were annouced and trophies were handed out. We made our way back into the pub and grabbed a seat for the much anticipated 'Roses' competition. It took almost two hours for the competition to start and we almost left, but we were very glad we stayed to see part of the competition. The bar owner covered the snooker table and made a makeshift stage. The announcer came out and interviewed each rose. The roses were dressed to kill and we all enjoyed the dancing.(see picture). We snuck out arond 12am and headed back to the B&B for some sleep.
