After our late night the evening before, we slept in a little to prepare for our day. We grabbed some free breakfast at the hotel and headed for the car. I think we circled the city 5 or 6 times trying to find the right way out of town to take the back roads . We headed for a small ferry a little outside of Waterford . The quick ferry ride was only about 20 minutes and before we knew it we were crossing country roads in County Wexford. We headed for Arklow which was recommended as a good place to stop over before continuing on the Wicklow mountains. Tara called in the favor again and we ended up booked into the Woodbridge hotel which is said to be the oldest hotel in Ireland. Once we ... read more

We started today out slowly. We got up and took our time getting ready. At this point, we were all ready for a good internet fix and so we spent some time in the internet café that was attached to the Kenmare hostel. I blogged, while the girls checked their email. We finished up and got ourselves onto the road. We headed for the Blarney Stone. We got ourselves to Blarney and found a good pub for lunch. At lunch, we asked the woman sitting next to us for some advice of some other places to see. She was sweet and gave us some suggestions for County Cork. We finished up lunch and headed for Blarney Castle. The grounds were slightly damp for the morning’s light rain but it was good for the girls’ to see ... read more

Today we woke up in our tiny little room in our Georgian House Hostel. The accomodations were adequate and we each showered and enjoyed the complimentary breakfast before hitting the road to see the Ring of Kerry. We were close to the start of the loop and it only took us a short car ride to start seeing the hills of Kerry. Our first stop of the day was in Cahersiveen where we found some ancient ring forts. We were all amazed by the contstruction of these forts. The forts are said to be 1000 years old and constructed without any mortar. We enjoyed walking on the top of the ring and then we heade back up the road to some castle ruins we had seen on the way to the forts. Tara was very excited ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Clare » Cliffs of Moher April 1st 2009

Today we woke refresh and all ran thru the shower in an effort to get on the road for our cliffs adventures. Joe the hippie who ran the hostel told us over a special path to take in order to get spectacular views of the cliffs. So we packed the car and headed directly to the cliffs which were only a few miles away. We pulled off the main road and climbed thru several fields and over some barbed wire and we were rewarded with the most spectacular views of the cliffs. Tara and I spent a good amount of time on our stomachs hanging over the edge of the clliffs in order to get the perfect shot from several angles. It was amazing! After our first perch on hag's head, we climbed up the side ... read more

We had a early call this morning. The alarm rang at six and we were out the door before 8am. We made a quick atm stop and then started heading south. On route, we stopped at a Centra for a little breakfast and encountered a very nice sales woman who brightened all of our days by calling us “love”. As we nibbled our breakfast in the car, we headed south from Galway towards Doolin. We were flying in the car because we were trying to make a ferry to the Aran Islands. At one point, we were going to have to pass a huge lorrie (truck) and my tendency is to hit the brakes… but this time Tara coached me thru it…”Don’t slow down, you can do it” and so I speed our little Toyota right ... read more

After our late night last nite, we all slept a little later than normal. After a quick run thru the shower, we were on our way for the day. We made a quick stop at the grocery to pick up some snacks for a picnic lunch. Our first stop of the day was the town Cong. We spent a good amount of time in the Cong Abby and on it’s grounds. We then ventured over to the TI for directions. The TI pointed us to the Quiet Man’s Cottage from the film the Quiet man (John Wayne). After a snap, we headed for the Ashford Castle. Ashford Castle is a high end hotel and golf course. It was only a 10 minute walk from the TI and we are glad we went. Although, we chickened out ... read more

I need to start this set of blog entries with a dedication to my traveling companions. Tara knows that I have a travel addiction. About 4 weeks ago she sent me an email that she knew would make me twitch. She sent me an email with very cheap airfares to Ireland. I tried to talk myself out of going by giving ton’s of excuses of why I couldn’t go… and I finally decided there was no real reason that I couldn’t go. I called Tara back and told her I was in. She had to make sure she had St.Brian’s approval, before we could book. In the mean time, I posted a question on Facebook that drew some comments…one being from my friend Jessica. She asked if she could go to carry my bags, and she ... read more

Our last day! The sentiment today was that none of us wanted to go home. Chris made us a lovely breakfast and we packed our things and got ourselves on the road to the airport. This trip has been wonderful. I was lucky to share this experience with my cousin Amy and my mom. We traveled around approximately ¾ of the country and when we returned the car, we had driven 1272 miles in two weeks. Ireland is a beautiful, welcoming country and I feel like it is my second home! I loved the opportunity to see family and the beautiful scenary. We decided that we will plan to return within the next 5 years.... read more

Breakfast started at 8:30 this morning, and we were in the dining room shortly after that. We enjoyed our breakfast and quickly made our plans for the day. Our first stop would be a sheep dog herding demonstration on the Ring of Kerry. The Ring of Kerry is a very scenic drive that takes most of a day, but we decided to only go about ¼ around the ring to make it to the demonstration, as we saw the total ring 5 years ago. We made the drive and totally missed the pub where the demonstration takes place. We ended up on a small road that only fit one car in the town of Kells. This road was very interesting and we had mountains to our right and ocean to our left. The weather was gorgeous ... read more

Today, we overslept! We scheduled our breakfast for 8am and we woke at 8:10. We hurried ourselves down to breakfast and it was almost 10am before we left the B&B. We were sad to see that is was raining, but we couldn’t complain since this would only be the second day of rain, which is pretty good for Ireland. We headed for downtown Kinsale to see some more sights that we have missed the previous evening. Downtown Kinsale was very busy; I think that all the locals and tourists had the same idea. This tiny town was bursting at the seams with people, and we had trouble finding parking. We wandered through the shops and a great farmers market for the next few hours. Kinsale is a beautiful harbor town below Cork City and we all ... read more
