Thursday 13.5.2010 day 211 Quebec Today we went for a drive into Quebec we near the Ottawa River and this river is the border between Quebec and Ontario. We drove by Otter lake and a few other lakes and though some wonderful forests and alongside the Ottawa River. We saw lamas but no bear or moose which is what we were really hoping to see. While at the resort restaurant tonight there was a group of bikers turned up and looked to be having a club meeting. We felt at home and would have joined in except that they all had Harley’s and not Ducati’s although technically we could have joined in as Harley does own MV so we could have joined in with our MV and Cagiva. ... read more

Wednesday 12.5.2010 day 210 Farm visit Today we went to the local library and printed out our travel claim forms and photocopied our recepts and checked our emails. Then in the afternoon we went on a farm tour of a local dairy farm that has over 200 head of cows. On the way there we saw a few ground hogs. They all live in a 400 ft barn were they have room to lie down or stand up. They are milked twice a day and we were there for the milking they milk them 20 at a time. There were also lots of calves there and lots of pregnant cows. It was fun to pat the little calves, they were outside in big dog houses and where chained in. When we got back to our lodge ... read more

Tuesday 11.5.2010 day 209 Ottawa Valley Sunrise here is about 5am at this time of the year and it is very nice to see the sun come up and shine on the lake in the morning. Samuel D Champlain was French explore, navigator and map maker who explored much of Eastern Canada. In 1613 while exploring the Ottawa River he needed to bypass the rapids in the river. To do this he portaged through a chain of lakes including green Lake (now Astrolabe Lake the lake on our resort) it is believed that is was here that he left behind his Astrolabe. An Astrolabe is one of the oldest know navigational instruments used. In 1867, Edward Lee a 12 year old boy whose family lived on the property, found the Astrolabe while helping his father clear ... read more

Monday 10.5.2010 day 208 Ottawa’s Tulip Festival and Montreal Today we drove to Canadian’s capital city Ottawa it is only about an hour from our lodge we had a look at the Tulip festival. It is the largest Tulip festival in the world from a gift of international friendship given 6 decades ago in 1945 Princess Juliana of Netherlands gave Ottawa 100,000 tulip bulbs. The gift was in appreciation of the safe haven that members of Holland’s exiled royal family received during the second WW in Ottawa and in recognition of the role which Canadian troops played in the liberation of the Netherlands. Princess Margret was born in Ottawa civic Hospital. There are over 3 million tulips in the festival. We also went to the parliament buildings on Parliament hill they look a lot like Westminster. ... read more
