Hey all, it feels like ages since I've had the time to sit down and catch up!! Our last day in Luxor, myself and Emma had to get up at half 4 to go hot air ballooning, we were very bleary eyed but it was worth it- we caught sunrise over the Valley of the Kings as we rose up. We didn't have a lot to do apart from look around but our "chief pilot" was very good and even came out with an "Cad is ainm duit?" when he learned I was Irish! Came back to the hotel for breakfast at half 7 before getting a horse and carriage ride through Luxor to Karnak temple. This is one of the most famous ancient Egyptian ruins where pharohs of all ages have left their marks- but ... read more

Hello all!! Finally relaxing in a roasting hot Luxor after a busy few days. On Wednesday we were up at the painful hour of 3am to get the bus to Abu Simbel from Aswan. We had to drive to the nearest police station and wait for more buses to join us on a security convoy- the first time we have seen the police do anything here!! Abu Simbel was impressive and the story of how the temples were rescued and moved from the rising waters of the Nile (following the construction of Aswan Dam) by UNESCO was even more impressive. We had about two hours there before being loaded back on the bus for a three hour drive to Philae Temple. It was built in honour of the Goddess Isis, and was actually a lot more ... read more

Hello all, Didn't sleep much on the train last night, we were all in reclining seats with plenty of legroom but we didn't try to sleep until after 1am and then it was still too noisy and uncomfortable. The train conductor woke us all up three times to inspect our tickets!! Still we must have slept at some point as when we were all awake this morning Graham told us that a man had come in and sat down and stared at us all for awhile. Creepy but not unusual apparantly, we get stared at quite a lot with all sorts of comments thrown at us (mostly 'welcome to egypt', 'what is your name', and 'you are a beautiful lady'). You would have thought that Egyptians would be quite used to foreign tourists by now, and ... read more

Hello all, I'm actually writing this a day later in Aswan where I've finally had time to catch up with everything!! We were up early in the morning for a very busy day around Cairo. There are a total of 15 in the group a and a fairly even mix of boys and girls. There's Inge (dutch), Suzanna (Scot), Kim (Aussie), George (Kiwi), Marianna and Joe (English), and then we also met Emma and Jason (Kiwis), Q (South Korea), and Greg, Jason, and Paul (Aussies). We're all mixed between 18-32. A good group so far!! We had our breakfast of breads and eggs (scrambled/boiled/omelette) with coffee, and then met our tour guide Ishmet and our security man. The police presence is not very evident since the revolution as the people do not trust them and they ... read more

Hey all!! Slept fine last night despite calls from the nearest minaret at half four and half seven!! We all got up early to meet with our driver and guide for Cairo, Mina. He was out of Cairo on holiday in Singapore when the protests in Egypt broke out and couldn't get back for a month!! However he was able to tell us a great deal. We first went to Cairo tower for panoramic views across the city, it was a bit smoggy but the Nile looked nice and the old fashioned houseboats which were moored alongside. We went to the zoo and ended up feeling up like the animals themselves as we attracted more attention from the locals- a big group of seven white people!! However everyone was very friendly and even in passing were ... read more

Hello from Africa/the Middle East!!! I arrived in Cairo international airport at 16:20 after a very smooth flight. Taxied in past the uncomfortable sight of a plane that had obviously skidded off the runway years ago- don't fly with Pharoh airlines!! I met an interesting guy on the way over who works as a security consultant on container ships through the Red Sea. I was met by a hotel representative at the airport which was great as I wouldn't have had a clue how to get my Egyptian visa without him, and had an hour long journey across Cairo with a man called Mahmoud. Saw a few sights along the way!! Survived Cairo traffic they have a very interesting system of getting where they went to go- lanes of traffic opening up where there wasn't lanes ... read more

Hey all!! Well it's my last day and I am leaving the hostel for the airport in two hours!! Quite tired!! On friday we went out for the last supper (official) to a lovely grill restaurant. Tamara and I shared a huge bowl of meat cooked to perfection. We had quite a few laughs there and then went on to a street in our guidebooks which was full of clubs and pubs. We started in a Lousiana styled pub and got free beers for entering, ended up singing kareoke and got free drinks for that too!! We ended up in a grotty club, getting free Cuba Libres for entering, and danced 'til 4am. It was a bit of a meat market but we had good fun together. Slept in til 12pm... it was great not having ... read more

Hey all!! We have finally arrived in Santiago - the capital of Chile. Not much to recount of the way down!! We spent three days and nights in San Pedro de Atacama. The town is located in the Atacama desert, the driest desert in the world. It hasn't rained there for over 250 years. We has a very enjoyable lazy time there, went out two nights and spent a lot of time cooking!! On the last day there we went to the Valley of the Moon for a visit which is supposed to look like the lunar landscape. It was rocky, sandy and barren with salt crystals everywhere. We went for a long walk, and hiked to the top of a large sand dune to watch the sunset. Our next stop was in Bahia Inglesia and ... read more

Hey all!! We had lots of fun in Salta, despite the camping!! Our campsite was pretty poor; squat toilets, stony ground, and a family living in the shower blocks!! We were pretty impressed with Argentina however, the change was evident as soon as we went over the border - better infrastructrure (i.e. tarmac roads) better houses, billboards everywhere, very modern!! We stopped at a Shell station which had shiny tiled floors, fridges, soap dispensers, and ferrero rocher- pure luxury!! On our first full day there most of us went white water rafting. We were expecting a grade IV river and were looking forward to it as we didn't do it in Cusco, as Salta was really hyped up. Unfortunately it was hyped up a bit too much, it was basically a grade II river with a ... read more

Hey all!! Somehow we managed to leave on time the next morning for Potosi and we discovered real bolivian roads - dirt tracks!! It was roasting in the truck but couldn't leave the windows open for the dust so we slept most of the journey. We didn't do much when we reached Potosi either apart from go out for dinner and went to bed early. The next day we were up early to visit the mines. Potosi was made famous by the discover of Cerro Rico (rich hill) a giant silver mine in the hill overlooking the town, in the time of the conquistadores. It funded much of Spains wealth for two centuries and is still producing silver, tin and zinc. Unfortunately methods of mining and conditions haven't changed much for the people who work there. ... read more
