Hey all, We arrived in La Paz after a big last night in Puno to say goodbye to Peru. It didn't take too long to get to the border, and there was a big process involving walking through three rooms to get our passports stamped. Once over the border we had to move all our belongings onto a hired minibus to take us to La Paz. La Paz is the highest capital city in the world at 3636m, and we stopped to view it in it's bowl surrounded by the mountains above. The next day we had the full day to ourselves to go around the markets. We had breakfast in Olivers Travels, a British themed pub which served pints of tea!! I had tetleys, it tasted so good I may have to switch to drinking ... read more

Hey all, We were up bright and early to get our boat to the islands on Lake Titicaca. Our transfers were on bicycle taxis and it was great craic racing through the streets trying to beat everyone around us!! It took 30mins to the floating reed islands which were our first stop. We were taught a few words in Aymara by Alejandro (our guide) as the inhabitants were the Aymaran Indians, but they had perfect Spanish so we were able to chat away to them!! We were given a talk on how they lived, built their houses and their islands!! They need to build a new island every 15-20 years as they tend to sink- by cutting the soil that the reeds grow from, drying it and tying them together so they form a floating base. ... read more

Hey all, we took a few days off there in Cusco to unwind and relax, so spent most of it doing nothing much at all!! We dandered around the streets from bakery to coffee shop. Cusco was founded by the Incas and a lot of their old walls are still standing around the city, acting as foundations for the Spanish colonial buildings which followed. We went out wednesday on a bit of a pub crawl covering the Irish and English themed bars, of which there were many!! Met some other Irish girls from Newry in Paddy Flaherty's and their Australian tour leader- ended up going to two clubs with them- Mythology and Mama Africas. It was really good craic, and was after 3am when we got back to the hotel. The next day was another day ... read more

Hey all!! Just arrived back yesterday from the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu!! It was an absolutely amazing adventure. Friday we took a trip to the Sacred Valley, stopping at lots of old Inca ruins on the way, abley guided by one Julio Cesar!! He was our guide for the Inca Trail too. We started off at Sacsaywaman above Cuzco, which was cool. Cuzco was built shaped like a Puma (one of the old Incan animals for strength, representing the land) and the ruins are at the head of the puma. They were an old Incan fortress and it was here that the Spanish were nearly (but not quite) routed from Peru. It was built over three levels and the stonework at the bottom was absolutely massive, and very cleverly carved lined up so that there ... read more

Hey all, Arequipa is a beautiful city, it is known as the"white city" as most of it's buildings are made of sillar, a pearly white volcanic material. But the thing that impressed us the most was how clean the city is. The air is fresh (at 2380m it should be!!), the streets are free of rubbish, and the traffic is silent, they even stop to let us cross the road. Had a very relaxed time in Arequipa - exploring the markets, eating well, soaking up the sunshine. We went to a turkish restaurant for dinner and I ended up trying alpaca meat - very strong and apparantly tastes like goat! We had quite an adventure leaving Arequipa!! We had to get up painfully early at 03:30 to leave at 4am for the Colca Canyon, which is ... read more

Hey all, Arrived in Arequipa yesterday at 5pm, it wasn´t a bad journey and we even managed to get a lie in!! Our last day in Lima was great, we spent most of the day in Miraflores, the more upmarket area of Lima. There were many huge artisan markets both indoor and outdoor to be explored. We had lunch in a fancy cafe built right into the coastline of the Costa Verde, and watched paragliders fly past. We also met our new truckmate, Qamar from London, at dinner later that night. After leaving Lima (at 6am rather than 5am which was still painful but more acceptable), we headed down the coast towards Paracas, sleeping all the way!! We had a speedboat tour of the Ballestas Islands all lined up, which are renowned for their birds and ... read more

Hey all, we had a good lazy last day in Huanchaco, after heading out the night before to celebrate Laura's birthday. Only five of us managed to surface for breakfast, and lazed by the pool until lunch. I tried Ceviche, a classic Peruvian dish consisting of raw white fish marinated in lime juice with herbs and chillis, and served with corn and sweet potato. It was nice but a bit too acidic for just after a big night out!! We left Huanchaco at 7am, and slept for most of the morning as usual. We stopped for a break at the Sechin ruins for a tour. There wasn't a lot to see at the ruins but the museum had a good selection of mummies!! The front and sides of the ruins were engraved by the Chavin civilisation ... read more

Hey all!! We spent the last three nights camping at a beach in Punta Sal, Peru. It was a long journey from Cuenca, and we stopped three times for immigration and customs!! Our campsite is pure luxury in a beautiful setting, we pitched our tents on the beach right next to the hostel which was handy for toilets!! The first night was good craic, the hostel cooked us dinner which was absolutely delicious; seafood fried rice, battered chicken and fish bites, and chips. Then we retired to beside the bonfire for the rest of the night making a good dent into our beers and rum. The next day we went into Mancora, the nearest town, to hire surfboards. Matt and I were going to share one, and the rest of the group get lessons from an ... read more

Hey all, I started Friday with a relaxing morning; lie in, journal writing and massage in the hotel, which wasn't as relaxing as I had hoped for!! I got my back massage and a few knots worked out, but also got a bum massage which was just weird!!! So I told them to get back to my shoulders!! In the afternoon, Matt and I want climbing with Paulo, our guide from yesterday, and his mate Oscar. Matt was already wrecked having just got back from white water rafting, and it was also his first time climbing outside. The site we were at was just stunning, the rock face was 100m high with a raging torrent of water going through a gorge in the middle. It was about 3pm when we got down there so the sun ... read more

Banos is an amazing town!! There are so many adventure sports guides, and we are with possibly the craziest- Jose and his two dogs!! Yesterday first thing we went for a bridge swing, which involved a full body harness, three ropes, and diving head first off a bridge to swing like a pendulum back and forth below it!! It was brilliant, and incredibly scary free-falling waiting for the rope to kick in!!! Only five of us did it and my insides were like jelly but it was a great feeling after- on an adrenaline high!! Then we went canyoning which was just fantastic. We swam in cool clear waters, scrambled over rocks, abseiled down waterfalls, climbed behind waterfalls, jumped off all sorts of ledges and did some wet bouldering. We were getting pretty hungry towards the ... read more
