February gave us a long weekend for the Lunar New Year, and rather than doing something cultural, Conor and I headed away for a drinking weekend with our Ulsan friends! We all met at the beautiful city of Gyeongju, where we rented a pension at a Western-themed resort called Eurovill. We were staying in the 'Roman' room in 'Italy'! This was basically a studio flat with a bathroom, a kitchen and a lot of floor space for sleeping! As well as barbequeing and drinking, we also went hiking around Namsan on the Sunday. This had been recommended by various co-teachers for the scenic beauty of the area but it felt like hiking any other mountain in Korea! There were some rock carvings of Buddha at various points and places where people had left offerings. We also ... read more

I didn't know what to expect from Korean food when I arrived, but it's been a delight! My school lunches in particular are amazing and I have tried so many different things with them. First I had to get used to only using chopsticks and a spoon, which took some time. My school uses flat metal chopsticks, and the first time I had lunch it took me 30mins to eat everything! However I quickly got used to them and can tackle most things now apart from de-boning fish which is still a messy process! School provides lunch for the teachers for about w63,000 per month, which breaks down as roughly w3150 per meal or e2.42. Amazing! And they always serve fresh vegetables mostly cold or raw; fish, tofu or meat; and often fruit as well as ... read more

So Doug lives and works in the city of Red Deer, situated halfway between Edmonton and Calgary. We arrived there on Sunday night and walked to his place as the snow fell gently around us. There's not a while lot to do in Red Deer and I was still getting my energy back, so we were happy to laze around, lie-in, and go for short walks to the supermarket and shopping centre. One of our walks took us out onto the frozen Red Deer river - scary! It's a very flat landscape and not particularly beautiful or anything, but Doug's happy here. On Tuesday evening we went out to the local pub for 'wing night' and to meet more of Doug's friends. Steph and Corey I had met before but two others were convinced that Doug ... read more

So for our only full day in Jasper we were heading skiing/snowboarding to marmot basin. While my brain no longer felt jet-lagged, I still wasn't able to sleep a full night through, so we had a relaxed morning and went to the mountain in the afternoon. We got really good deals for classes, gear rental and lift passes. Doug was going skiing as he'd done it before and I was going to try snowboarding for the first time. I was on my own for beginner lessons and they were for two hours. I wasn't sure what to expect but it was a lot of fun and very similar to kayaking in terms of edging and trunk rotation! Look where you want to go and relax seem to be the fundamentals. We went over the basics, toe-edge, ... read more

So back when I moved away to Spain last year, I left my boyfriend Doug behind, but we kept our relationship going (thank you skype). I went home briefly for a long weekend in February, and then Doug moved to Canada in June two weeks before I returned home from Spain. Despite the multiple time zones and the difficulties long distance causes, our relationship kept going strong, and I was able to fly from Korea to Canada to see him for my two-week winter vacation! I flew into Calgary, where despite travelling for about 20 hours, an hour had only passed on the clock. I was so excited leaving the airport to see all the snow and had to keep pinching myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. And to see Doug in the flesh again ... read more

I needed a trip out of Busan to relieve the cabin fever that had set in during December, so Deborah came with me one cold Saturday on a day trip to the small city of Gyeongju. We had the incredibly comfy bus again with the seats that almost recline into a bed. It looked like a very pretty town indeed, most buildings had traditional Korean roofs, even petrol stations! One thing we weren't prepared for though was the bitter cold - the wind cut right through us! Should remember that's it's always warmer in Busan! We hopped on a bus that would take us to Bulguksa (temple) - one of the main attractions of the area and one that was mentioned in my 5th graders English book - "Gyeongju has Bulguksa. Bulguksa has two towers. What ... read more

So my friend Jennifer (Scottish who I met in Cadiz but now teaches in Tokyo) came to stay for a week, and we decided to make the most of all the hiking around Busan. We headed out for a hike we started once before but deliberately wandered off course! Our aim was Seokbulsa temple - apparantly one of the more beautiful and unique Buddhist temples in the Busan area. After cheating and getting the cable car halfway up Geumjung mountain (for views!) we started our walk. The autumn (had to stop myself from typing fall there) leaves were beautiful, they had changed colour completely to all shades of yellow and red, and they were mostly incredibly vibrant. We followed the trail to the old fortress gate, newly renovated of course, and then wisely continued on in ... read more

So Busan has an annual firework festival which is reportedly the biggest in Korea. After a night on the town for Hallowe'en, we claimed our spaces on Gwangalli beach at 3pm - prime seats right at the front for the 9pm show! DSLR camera's and tripods lined the streets , everyone moving around for the best view. The theme for the festival was love - Busan wants Gwangalli to be the number one proposal spot in Korea. And love was certainly all around - as it got dark there were two proposals shown live on giant screens on the firework barges. The firework and lazer light show was all set to music and it certainly was a fantastic spectacle; the bay lit up, colourful smoke hung over the water, small burning fireworks were seen bobbing on ... read more

One beautiful sunny October day, we found ourselves gathered outside a small temple at Chungyeolsa in Busan for a traditional Korean wedding ceremony: Pae Baek (폐백). Sessy, an English teacher we met at orientation, was marrying her Korean boyfriend Myung-Seo. Traditional ceremonies like this have been widely replaced by more Western style ceremonies, so even my Korean work colleagues didn't know what we were to expect! We gathered outside where Sessy and Myung-Seo were having their final preparations made. They were both dressed in traditional Hanbok (한복) clothes. These traditional outfits date back to the Chosun Dynasty where members of the Royal Family wore decorative, bright coloured outfits for formal functions or ceremonies. These have been modernised but for the purposes of Pae Baek, Hanbok are used in the traditional sense where the bride and groom ... read more

Every year my school has a sports day, which all students and their families attend. It's a big community occasion in which everyone participates. For the previous two weeks the students practiced for the different events, and in the week before we all cut classes for a final run through! I had my role too - holding the ribbon (springy bandage) at the end for the races, and participating in the teachers versus parents relay race! It was a beautiful Saturday morning and the school was draped in bunting. Tables and chairs were set up for our visiting dignitaries (local mayor and politicians) and families were gathering on rugs under the trees with breakfast hampers. We kicked off events around 9am with speeches, singing the National Anthem and school song. Then the games began! All (84) ... read more
