First big trip is a road trip road trip to Sydney and back. We targetted the coastline closer to Sydney, and therefore spent the first day covering many miles, or kilometers as it were, over 400 of them. While we had to spend many hours in the car, we did find time for some fun and leisure. There are many wine regions surrounding Melbourne, so our first stop was at a winery for our lunch break. The wine was good, we even planned to buy a bottle, but the dining room service was uninterested in serving us one of the available window tables. Rather than give our money to a classist establishment, we instead slummed it with cheese and salad wraps on their boardwalk through the boggy tree palm patch. Fruit stands dot the highway as ... read more

Unemployment has its benefits, like taking long blocks of holiday. Can't lose what you don't have. Part two of my post-job decompression is a monthlong stay in Australia. Via a 10-hour long layover in Dubai and over two "days", I made my way to Melbourne to visit my friend and recent transplant. First impression: there are a lot of asians around and they brought good food with them! First full day we tag along with my host's friends to Healesville Sanctuary, and a stop at a winery. There are promises of koalas and kangaroos and it does not disappoint. The koalas blinked at us from their seats in the trees, the kangaroos and wallabies munched on breakfast in clumps a little ways from the path, the platypus swam laps in the darkened pool. The tasmanian devils ... read more

I head out from Duvendiek to catch the train to Rügen from a nearby town, but realize I will miss it, and start heading to Stralsund. I approach the next town just as another train pulls in, and miss it as well, doh! Rather than wait an hour or two, I opt to cycle along the motorway on the dedicated path to Stralsund. The path is fast but unpicturesque. From there I get the train to Lietzow, which is the closest town to Kap Arkona along the train network. Kap Arkona the northernmost point of Rügen, and my destination for the day. From Lietzow the hilly path winds through a beautiful beech forest and then dips down to the coast, before turning slightly more inland through beautiful pastures and meadows towards Glowe. The path changed from ... read more

On Thursday the forecast held rain for the afternoon. We race hopefully before the rainclouds east along the coast from Prerow to Zingst along a popular and elevated path with beach access. From there we turn south towards Barth. The next day J and D will leave from Stralsund, so we aim for a little place not far from Stralsund in Duvendiek. After Barth, a soft rain finally started and we were able to find shelter along the way to kit up. It was still pleasantly cool, and with my waterproofs I felt armored against the mosquitoes, who had been slowly but consistently finding our bare patches. We returned to the small towns, agricultural land, and winding avenues lined with cathedral-like trees. We did not stop to admire the fields, we did not take photographs, but ... read more

This is our final stretch towards the sea. The theme of the day is lost and found. We enter the tentacles of Rostock, where we refuel. We wander through to the sprawling city towards the coast, including a detour west taking us past an IKEA (hotdog break for D) and a local produce market where we grab delicious apples, plums, and blackberries. My companions tell a story of Rostock and neo-Nazis. We finally make our way to Warnemunde, eventually find the ferry which will take us to the east side of the channel, and eventually find the campground, which is a sprawling campervan park. We are given a small plot of land next to the toilets. By now I have been stared at a lot (Germans are known for not being self conscious about staring), and ... read more

Finally a workday, and our priority is to make it to a bigger town where they will have a decent bike shop to check the integrity of the damaged wheel. We cycle on the main road towards Krakow am See which already has fast big traffic until Bussow, where we take a detour east along the coast of the the lake towards Möllen. At Bussow is a farm with a two crates of fresh cucumbers and zucchini and a can for you to drop your donation on the side of the road, and we pick out a couple of cucumbers for lunch. We then have a peaceful roll through beautiful farmland, and pass by the particularly lovely village of Möllen, along with its "hippie" farm, their yard full of old farm equipment. In Krakow am See ... read more

Sunny day, perfect weather. We follow the Elbe-Müritz trailfrom Lenzen to Parchim and then from Parchim to Plau am See as much as possible, cutting out loops when the route wasn't found or to save time. We pass rolling hills of wheat and corn, the road lined with lovely poppies and other wildflowers. Most towns are quaint, beautiful, old, and a little bit broken. While I find the old dilapidation charming and full of character, my German companions find no beauty in this. There seems to be an endless network of these tiny ten-building towns of -itz's and -hof's- and -dorf's and -ow's. We would pass through the towns in a blink and then have to check which town a few kilometers away was our next target. Many had beautiful old timber-framed (fachwerk) stables and houses ... read more

We start our cycle tour to the sea from Berlin perhaps unconventionally in Wittenberge. T, D, and I take a train ride after work towards the Brandenburg border, our loaded bikes packed in with other cycling commuters, who slowly filter out as we meander through farmland. Wittenberge is the end of the train line, and we still have some kilometers along the Elbe by bike towards Lenzen before the end of day. J is borrowing her bike from her sister who is overnighting in Lenzen for work, so she has journeyed ahead of us. The plan is to cycle along the Elbe River bikeway briefly today, then meander along the Elbe-Müritz loop over the next couple of days to the Berlin-Copenhagen bike route. From there we approach Rostock, and in the remaining days, we explore the ... read more

My visit to NZ is the culmination of a desire to see the homeland of a dear friend of mine, which started when we were grad students together, almost a decade ago. The fact that LOTR was filmed there doesn't hurt. A friend who recently visited called it a trip of a lifetime. The pressure of such a label is a bit much, and with a total of three weeks, I definitely will only be tasting a slice of what NZ has to offer. A long list of places to visit was made, and I've had to painfully cross things off First week is mostly planned, Matamata, Coromandel, Rotorua, Tongariro crossing, Wellington. Second week is hopefully the south island. Original intentions to go through Christchurch will be let go, but I look forward to directly contributing ... read more

We had the morning in Blois, and then trains to Caen, where we would catch a ferry back to the UK. I spent some time wandering a crowded street market, buying fresh local chevre to bring home, and wishing I lived there so I could buy more. I topped that off with a wander through the royal chateau, which had the interesting trait of having wings in different styles of architecture. It also provides beautiful views of the river and the city below. Our connections took us through Tours which was also a large city, and it seemed very interesting and multicultural. Worth a second look. Finally at Caen, we had to cycle 15 km to reach the ferry port, which isn't actually in the city of Caen, but in Ouistreham. We moved along a canal ... read more
