This is starting to get rather behind and so is going to have to get possibly rather shorter rather than a ramble on (some of you may cheer!). Anyway I am actually now in Mokpo but must rewind back to Daejeon beach (sorry if the spelling may have been inconsistent with a "j"-"ch" there maybe in that name). Having checked out the hourly train times with my temporary American friends yesterday while I was at the station got a taxi there for the 1 PM train which went to Iksan, then a 20 minute changeover time to get a chugger to Jeonju which is not on the fast KTX line to Yeosu, which is where the Expo 2012 is - will get there later, having been to the Nagoya one in Japan in 2010 (simply because ... read more

Sunday 17 June - I had decided that a visit to the island of Sapsido was recommended, mostly because it was covered in detail in the Lonely Planet (yes I could strike out where no man has gone before but there are risks.... had had enough adventure the previous day). First of all however I had to change my accommodation. As it was Sunday and the pressure is only really on Friday and Saturday accommodation I walked over to the Motel Coconuts which was advertising WiFi. My purpose was to ascertain the price before I wheeled my bag over. When she told me 50,000 I began to walk away, only to get my stuff and check in properly. However this must have been taken as the old market -- walk away price negotiation thing, and she ... read more

Just as well I did not have Internet yesterday 16 June at the Motel If - otherwise I would have wasted my time having a grizzle when I was really tired after a very bad day of travel . However today 17 June, now at the Motel Coconuts a mere 10 minute walk from the aforementioned, I do have WiFi and am in a much better mood -- possibly helped by a few glasses of the rather nice Spanish red I bought in Seoul, but also a damned nice grilled shellfish dinner (more on that later of course). 16 June - well why did I have such a bad travel day yesterday? Well how does 3 1/2 fruitless hours sitting around the bus terminal waiting for a bus that despite schedule never seemed to arrive (twice)?? ... read more

It was a late night last night, not really as a result of the raw chestnut/rice wine last night at Nomasaru, more the blogging update! (What I do for you people - or myself). Anyway got myself together and left the motel at about 11:30 AM and got myself a taxi rather than walk across the bridge to the bus terminal. As the buses were more or less every 30 minutes to Buyeo did not even check the times but headed for the local outlet in the terminal of Paris Baguette, an upmarket bakery, which also was at my local Metro station in Seoul at Anguk, but I did not actually try. (Unbelievably there was no 7- 11 type convenience store anywhere near my motel in Gongju - outrage, normally they are about every 200 m, ... read more

off the bus from Cheosan at the terminal on the other side of the river at about 6:45 PM on 13th. Decided that as all the action that I wanted to see in terms of sites was on the other side that I would walk across the bridge and find a motel there. Which I did with the usual big TV screen and home computer. Once settled in went out to look for dinner and things were not that promising further down. So decided to try one of the Lonely Planet recommendations, Nomasaru which was fairly close anyway. Shuddered at the prospect of my knees and sitting semi-folded on the floor (the joints don't like it any more). Anyway the food was unbelievably fab as you can see from the mixed flower bimibab! And the rustic ... read more

I started the last post on the train to Cheosan. Getting to Cheosan could have been on two ways, all actually three ways, if I wanted to spend 2 1/2 hours on the subway/metro going all the way to about the seventh last stop of the incredibly long line 1. Instead it took me an even hour or so on the aforementioned Saemaeul express train. I could also have gone by bus but as there are about four bus stations in Seoul from which buses for various cities leave, I decided it was easier to change one subway station and go to Seoul Central Station. I decided to buy a ticket from the machine, which you can at least persuade to work in English . I discovered then that I could get the really fast KTX ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul » Insadong June 11th 2012

started: heading out of Seoul 12 June on train 1034, a 16.05 depart Saemaeulho (express, not superfast KTX) train to Cheosan, as a bit of a stab as to where to go to which is more or less interesting. It also needs some detail which I get from the Lonely Planet (LP) E guide I have to the province of Chungcheongdam-do. So we will see what happens. Ticket was cheap, only $8. So backwards now. 11 June: I decided I would belatedly check out in more detail Insadong which is otherwise probably the most foreign touristed area with Itaewon (and I was less than impressed with all that). I had walked thru it before only being half aware where I was. Went there via the Chongyecheon stream as per pix. This time decided to make an ... read more

8 June: decided I would check out the high end Apgujeong shopping area. Although I knew where it was it was further than I thought from the subway station of the same name. I was essentially looking for Rodeo Street (no relation -- much -- to Rodeo Drive in LA/Beverley Hills). Not entirely sure I actually found it but after having wandered through the two rather large buildings of the Galleria - essentially European labels and all that sort of designer gear, I had probably seen enough anyway. Strangely enough I came upon a wine shop and actually bought a half bottle of NZ pinot noir for about $12 as it was slightly reduced (more importantly it had a screw top -- these snobs who still insist on corks for closures are mugs). Anyway wandered around ... read more

Asia » South Korea » DMZ June 7th 2012

today was the day that I got to go to the DMZ (I am sure that everyone knows that stands for De-Militarised Zone) which is the 2 km zone in both North and South Korea on either side of the MDL (military demarcation line). Supposedly you are supposed to book them three days or more ahead. Fortunately with the help of the guy at the hanok in Bukjong he did this for me with this particular company. Although most of them will collect from most hotels, this was not actually much use to me as at the time of booking I did not actually know where I was actually going to be. So the idea of waiting for the tour bus at a particular subway exit bus stop was certainly preferable to me. However I almost ... read more

real time is actually Sunday night 10 June and I am really behind so must catch up with this blog. I have had an extremely slow day today due to a relatively hard night drinking and eating last night with my American buddy Uday but you will hear about that later. 6 June is actually Memorial Day in Korea but from the couple of Koreans I spoke to they did not seem really clear on what it actually commemorated! I think it is basically the same as Memorial Day in the USA which notionally honours the efforts of their armed forces generally in various conflicts. It is certainly not the same date as that of the start of the Korean war, 25 June 1950 as I recall, nor the "ending" (of full scale hostilities only) of ... read more
