As we intended to spend some extended time in the Philippines we decided to explore the north luzon area before we got to the islands so we could get a better feel for the country. We also like to work for our beach time; theres no pleasure without pain. Plus we figured 1 week of strenuous mainland activity equates to several weeks of beach time right? When we were told by other backpackers that the rice terraces in north luzon were truly beautiful although we were in no doubt about it, we could not start to picture or imagine what these terraces were like for ourselves. Looking at pictures gave us a general idea but this alone was not even close to the actual experience. The experience was far better. Being there with these terraces in ... read more

Leaving the perhentian islands was a somber occasion. We could have easily stayed longer here to snorkel and enjoy the private beach we found on the final day. However after catching our boat across to the Kuala Besuit jetty and walking to the bus station, our moods instantly picked up when we discovered we had booked a night bus that was not only spacious with reclining seats, but it also had wifi!!. Bonus. This was luxury for us and we were overjoyed. Needless to say after uploading a Myanmar blog and finding out we got voted blogger of the week (thanks RENanDREW) we slept very well, all snug and overly stretched. The journey took 8 hours and cost 57ringgit but would have cost 45r if we booked it when we arrived at Kular Besuit jetty and ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Terengganu » Perhentian Kecil March 21st 2015

When doing our research on Malaysia one gem we had been looking forward to visiting the most was the Perhentian islands; Sat at my office desk with my attention drifting from work, my mind would take me to what I believed it would be like; perfect blue waters, soft sandy beaches, an amazing underwater world and great sea food. Add in a BBQ and a mango shake, then that would be my paradise. As our pending trip got closer more and more I would idle over days that we could spend relaxing on the beach, reading books, listening to music or exploring the island and cooling down with a shake, beer or just some refreshing cold drink. It wasn't hard to look forward to this place and forget about any work projects in hand. Oh how ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Pahang » Cameron Highlands March 19th 2015

Coming from a country that drinks copious amounts of tea, the Cameron Highlands was a place we had to visit. Known for its beautiful mountain scenery and the many tea and strawberry plantations, we knew it was going to be a little heaven for us. Getting there from Penang was straightforward as we opted for the tourist minibus taking 6 hours(43 ringgit each). The closer we got to the Cameroon Highlands the more we had mixed feelings on the scenery. Don't get us wrong there were many moments where we were wowed. We were simply blown away by the lush greenery covering the mountains with many towering peaks all sat together in a rugged manner. However, another thing that also caught our attention was sadly the amount of mining and the consequence of deforestation that was ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town March 16th 2015

Georgetown is one of those places that oozes charm and character. We are not sure what it was for us; whether it was the laid back sleepy atmosphere, the quainter streets with beautifully intact buildings or more the more rustic, crumbling colonial shop houses; the fact that it had more food cuisines than you can shake a chopstick at (all of which had our taste buds working overtime), jaw dropping street art buried deep within its alleys or its beautiful mix of cultures and faiths all sitting beside each other in harmony. We just loved this town, it had us intrigued and we explored this place with such ease. George-town named after the British King Goerge III is situated on the island Penang and is well known for its UNESCO world heritage label due to its ... read more

Getting from Mandalay, Myanmar to our next destination Langkawi, Malaysia was slightly long winded but made easier as we caught a flight from Mandalay to Bangkok and then another one to Hat Yai where we settled for the night. Hat Yai was not what we expected. Arriving at night this place was buzzing. Lots of market stalls selling food, cheap clothes all side by side next to many high end malls. Throw in some rats and some suspicious looking women hanging around on street corners and you have Hat Yai. Next stop Langkawi, Malaysia. In order to get to Langkawi the following morning we caught a tuktuk to the bus station, then a coach to Satun, another tuk tuk to the ferry terminal, a ferry across the Thai border to get into Langkawi, and then a ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Mandalay March 11th 2015

Tired. Arriving at our hostel (around 4am) following an 8hr overnight bus from Nyangshwe (Inle Lake), we slept more comfortably on the reception chairs for a few hours until our room was ready. By 'more comfortably' we mean some sleep, interrupted every so often after sliding off the chair and then trying to reposition ourselves to avoid cramp. So not much sleep but more than we had on the night bus. The main thing for tourists to do whilst in Mandalay is to go on a day tour around the surrounding areas/villages via motorbike or taxi. This includes visiting Sagaing, Inwa and Amarapura. The city itself doesn't really hold much regarding sightseeing apart from the hill top monastery with great views. After a quick clean-up we opted for the friendly taxi guy 'U Chit' who seemed ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Inle Lake March 8th 2015

One place in Burma we were really looking forward to was our stay in Inle Lake. A 45 square mile freshwater lake known for its abundance of fish (9 of which cannot be found elsewhere), secondly for the style of fishing adopted here and thirdly it’s floating gardens and villages within. Therefore the thought of staying in a laidback lake-town offering us the chance to enjoy what great scenery and ambiance the lake had to offer was very appealing. To be honest, it could not have come at a better time as after the trek we needed some downtime. For the first part of our stay we opted to take a boat tour with the 4 others from our trekking group as we got a good deal after the trek and what’s more we all got ... read more

Asia » Burma » Eastern Burma » Kalaw March 6th 2015

Our 3 day trek through the mountains of Myanma: We did not know this at the time, but this was to become one of the main highlights of our trip to Myanmar. We made a quick stop in Kalaw which was pretty uneventful but the purpose of which was to book and begin a 3 day 2 night trek from Kalaw to Inle Lake. We happily took the day bus option to get here as opposed to any night bus, although arriving in the daytime still made no difference. Following an 8 hour ride we were both disoriented, tired and restless. In minutes however we settled on Honey Pine Inn and were pretty happy with the hotel. Using P’s bartering skills we managed to get a $35 room to $20, and it was the best room ... read more
