Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan March 2nd 2015

Bagan; The very reason we planted Myanmar firmly on our list of not to be missed. Tempted by the huge plain of temples that were clouded in a thick mist of dust this place oozed magic, adventure and culture and was a place we were childly excited about. Arriving at the Bagan bus station at 4am with barely no sleep and then being harassed by taximen shouting $20 in your face was disorientating to say the least. After figuring out the distance to the town and pairing up with a French couple we managed to get the taxi ride to town for a total of $8 not before stopping at the toll to pay $20 each for the so called conservation fee. This is meant to go to the restoration of the sights, although it is ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon February 27th 2015

We landed in Yangon around 6pm after a quick flight from Bangkok. The city of Yangon was a lot bigger than we expected. Taking in our surroundings in our cab we commented on how modern/built up it was, it was pretty dark by that point so our views were quite limited. One thing we did notice however was that most of the men and boys wore traditional long wrapped bottoms (like skirts). We later found out these are called 'paso' for the men whilst the women wear 'longi'. Although similar in design the pattern for men was mainly simple chequed patterns while women wear far more intricately patterned bright and colourful designs. Our hostel was in a small street in chinatown. Most places close by 10pm and as we didn't know much about the surrounding area ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Ayutthaya February 26th 2015

One place that has been on our Thailand must see list was Ayutthaya - An ancient capital up until the 18th century before it was burned and ransacked by the Burmese. It's about 2 hour train ride from Bangkok then a 2min boat ride from the mainland. After paying for our 3rd class tickets 20baht/40p each we briefly got talking to another British couple Harry and Jazz. Also at the start of their round the world trip, we soon realised we were taking similar trips. Once arriving in Ayutthaya, we paired up with this couple again and chatted excitedly about our previous/current trips and our lives back home as we set off to explore the site together. Across an area of 14 sq kilometres, this site contains a mixture of stupas, temples and headless buddhas. With ... read more

Our Journey to Osaka Kansai airport was straightforward. The train description however was a little over exaggerated. We opted for the only train available, the rapid direct route. This train was not rapid nor direct. Only if you count the 15 stations it stopped at for a good 5/10 minutes each. Very unlike Japan's standards. As the train was full, we had to stand on our feet for most of the 70 minute journey. Not a problem, Chris put on his music and tried to stay awake while P enjoyed a bit of people watching for an hour. Arriving in Bangkok, was a lovely feeling. Hit by the warm humid air as we stepped outside and struck by the loud traffic we were happy to be in Bangkok knowing that there was no more cold weather ... read more

Asia » Japan » Osaka February 22nd 2015

Next destination Osaka. Still getting to grips with the JR train system announcement boards we ended up getting on the local train instead of the express train. Turning a 90min journey into a 3 hour one! Great. After checking in, our hostel informed us that on Sundays they have a member of staff who takes guests for food and drinks in a Japanese tapas type place not too far. Everything on the menu is 300yen (£1.80) and the portions are good including the beer. She didn't have to tell us twice. We waited at the meet up point with 3 other hostel guests and were introduced to the craziest 64 year old Japanese man with the most infectious laugh. His name was Mr Yano and he loves a good drink (especially sake). Even though his English ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hiroshima » Hiroshima February 20th 2015

Our first day in Hiroshima was quite relaxed. Apart from having a stroll around the immediate area, we took it quite slow. One highlight of the day however was having okonomiyaki for dinner. This was unlike any other okonomiyaki previously mentioned. The portion sizes were big and we in essence got 2 each, one consisting of noodle, the other more of a vegetable mix. Both made by creating a pancake like base and fried egg on top. These were so delicious and very filling. We both cant wait to start making these dishes back home. Another memorable moment during our stay was an evening spent at our hostel. As this hostel had a sociable lounge area, we got talking to other guests whilst enjoying our Japanese beers. Amongst them was a girl from Sydney, a guy ... read more

Day 1 Tokyo/Kyoto Today we packed up our bags and rushed our way to the JR line at Tokyo station to make our way to Kyoto. Did we mention we were catching the bullet trains? These trains run up to a mega 275 mph compared to our 2hr Manchester to London trains running upto a mere 125mph. These are fast. Both excited about our ride, the 3hour journey went by in no time. Not before we got fantastic views of mount fuji. P got snap happy and took far too many pictures, while Chris took the time to edit some video blogs. The ride to kyoto was as to be expected smooth and effortless. Using our newly found offline map on our phone we successfully navigated our way to our new guesthouse for the next 3 ... read more

Day 6 Up with an early start at 5:30 and determined to hire our bikes, we beat the masses and managed to secure ourselves one bike each. As it was still early we took the opportunity to get some more beauty sleep and went back to bed for a couple of hours. Starting with our delicious Japanese apples and a mister donut for breakfast, we were ready to start our day. The first leg of the route we cycled along the riverbank. This was picturesque and we commented on how many others cyclists and runners there were. Next we had to go further inland to cross the many quaint little bridges (5 or 6 in total) and islands to get to our first destination of Tsukshima. This was an atmospheric street filled with charming little Japanese ... read more

Day 3 Odaiba Yesterday evening we set ourselves a plan for an epic bike ride across the city taking in many different attractions and things we wanted to see. Knowing it would be difficult we knew we had to get up early. Leaving our hostel at 9am, we went to find the bike hire place marked on our maps. When we got there we were told they had ran out so instead they directed us to another place 15 minutes away. Same story again. No bikes. Looking across the city there were hundreds of bikes, either in use or parked up outside of apartments and shopping areas. We concluded that most locals must also hire these out too as it was insane how all the bikes were gone. We were instructed to come back another morning ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo » Asakusa February 8th 2015

Day 1 Journey to Tokyo Konichiwa. We both arrived in Tokyo, slightly tired after taking the megabus to London and making our way on the underground to Heathrow for our 12 hour flight to Tokyo. Apart from being treated to free wine, our journey was uneventful and so we slept on and off throughout. The closer we got to Tokyo however the more our nerves and excitement began to kick in as we questioned how our journey to our hostel in Asakusa would pan out. When we arrived at Haneda airport buying the skytrain/subway tickets was fairly easy using the ticket machines and so we had no problems at all. All the stations had English translations so we managed to get to the station we needed and thereafter our hostel without too many incorrect turns, which ... read more
