Day 375: Thursday 9 July - Greasing palms I’m sad to be leaving Laos this morning. It has been my favourite country in Southeast Asia to date and one of my favourite countries on my journey so far. Papa takes me across to Ban Nakasang on his boat, offering me my second shot of Lao Lao of the day (he’s already given me one with my breakfast!) on the way. This is yet another example of why I have come to love this country - the people. Laotian’s are the most warm, friendly and generous people I have met anywhere in the world. I will miss the country, but above all I will miss the people. Many of my highlights involve encounters with the locals - sharing in the Akha culture in Muang Sing; the two ... read more

Day 371: Sunday 5 July - An interesting journey Six of us leave Vong Phaseud guesthouse at 9am and walk towards the ferry port. We have declined the offer of the guesthouse owner to take us in a mini-bus to Si Phan Don as he won’t budge on charging us 55,000 kip (£4) per person regardless if one of us take the bus or all five of us. He is being stupid, and clearly doesn’t need the money. Instead, we are more than happy to give 10,000 kip each to a family heading to Pakse on a sawngthaew full of bags of rice. They take us to the ferry port, across the river and then to the junction with the highway running north to south, where five of us get off heading south and Jess continues ... read more

Day 370: Saturday 4 July - Wat Phu Champasak The bus drops me off next to the ferry port which I need to cross the Mekong to Champasak which lies on the other side of the river. The ‘ferry’ is two boats connected by a raft, which can carry a few people and motorbikes. Simple but effective, and typically Laos. On the other side of the river I wonder if I’m in the right place. I can’t see any guesthouses or even any sign that a tourist industry exists in the small village. I ask in a small shop and they point up the road and say 3 kilometres. It may still be before 9am but it is already hot and this is not going to be a walk I enjoy. On the way, I pass ... read more

Day 368: Thursday 2nd July - Growing to like Vientiane’s French charm When I arrived in Vientiane last night it didn’t make a good first impression. The Tuk-Tuk mafia didn’t help, waiting at every street corner to ask if you want a ride or illegal drugs when you decline the ride. This is more Thailand than Laos. My room is a cramped affair with no window to allow any outside light in, but I was warned not to expect great things on the accommodation front of the capital. From bad first impressions, slowly Vientiane grows on me...... Before I start sightseeing today I have a number of chores to take care of; book a bus ticket to Pakse, make sure my travel insurance is renewed as it has lapsed, find an ATM and get a haircut. ... read more

Day 365: Monday 29th June - Back on the backpacker trail in Vang Vieng Today is going to be a day doing little. After spending 33 hours on buses and sawngthaew’s the last 4 days I need to recharge my batteries. Walking around Vang Vieng in the morning I am not sure this is the ideal place to do it. Vang Vieng has become THE backpacker's pit stop in Laos, and walking down the main street I’ve seen far more westerners than locals. It feels like a mini Khao San Road and is far too westernised evidenced by the restaurant menus serving largely western food, a proliferation of expensive internet cafes, numerous TV bars showing little else apart from re-runs of Friends or Family Guy and many guesthouses which must be doing each other out of ... read more

Day 363: Saturday 27th June - The hidden city of the Pathet Lao during the Secret War The bus pulls into Sam Neua bus station at 2:30am. I spend the next 3 hours trying to get some sleep on the cold concrete floor in the bus station. Oh how times change! When I do wake up I try to fathom out the next stage in the journey. I want to visit Vieng Xai, which was the Pathet Lao hideout during the Secret War. It is a 40 minute journey from Sam Neua. Is it best to stay in Sam Neua and do a day trip or travel on to Vieng Xai? I choose the latter, based on the descriptions in the guide of the respective towns but I can’t manage to find someone in the bus ... read more

Day 361: Thursday 25th June - The Secret War After an 8 hour journey to cover only 200km through twisty, mountainous roads surrounded by lush vegetation, dodging cows on the road (a typical Laos journey), I arrive in Phonsavon, the capital of Xieng Khouang province. Unsurprisingly the bus station is 5km from town so I will need transport to get there. I manage to blag a free lift into the town, on the proviso I check out a couple of guesthouses that they are touting. The second is decent, but I told Ross and Yo-Hun that I was heading to King Keo guesthouse. As I am getting a lift there I spot Yo-Hun and Ross in the town checking out tours. I check into King Keo, where the other two arrived an hour or so ago ... read more

Day 358: Monday 22nd June - A charming town by the Mekong When I left off my last blog, I was sharing a family room in a boutique hotel with Maria, a Spanish girl I’d met on the slowboat down the Mekong to Luang Prabang. After one of the worst night’s sleep on my trip, I’ve decided that arrangement has to come to an end. The problem is you see that my room is effectively outside on the veranda. In itself that isn’t a big deal but the hotel is next to a busy road and opposite a temple. I was awoken by the banging of the drums at the temple at 4am and then again at 6am when the traffic started. Before moving guesthouses I make sure I enjoy my first bath for about 8 ... read more

Day 356: Saturday 20th June - The first day on a slowboat down the Mekong Described in a number of sources as one of the essential experiences in Southeast Asia, and one of the best boat journeys in the region as well, I should be really excited about the two day trip down the Mekong River from Huayxai to Luang Prabang. This is the section of the river that passes some of the best scenery on its 3000 mile journey through 6 countries from its source in Tibet. I have heard mixed reports so my enthusiasm is checked. I decide in the morning of my departure to buy a ticket from my guesthouse which ends up costing me $2 more than it would have from the boat pier. When will you learn, Andrew??! The price includes ... read more

Day 351: Monday 15th June - The bus breaks down on the way to Luang Namtha If one day could sum up why I love Laos this would be it. Nothing spectacular happens, but in Laos that doesn’t matter. Day to day life in this most laid back and relaxing of countries is interesting enough on its own. As I wait in the tiny village of Ban Donchai for the bus to pass, I am treated to various antiquated tractors, stripped down to their engine driving past at a fraction above walking pace. Then a group of young monks, dressed in saffron robes cycle past and take an interest in the farang (tourist) sat waiting for a bus in the most unlikely of places. The bus arrives at a little after 2pm, my luggage is strapped ... read more
