Day 228: Thursday 12th February - I’m an ant licker, and I don’t care! It is yet another early start in Cairns as I’m getting picked up at 7:30am for a tour going north to Cape Tribulation. Almost everyone on the tour with the exception of a Swiss couple and an Irish guy are English. Our first stop of the day is to a wildlife sanctuary. I question our driver, Scotty when we get off the bus as already he has sent around a sheet for people to choose their lunch option and now he is about to buy entrance tickets for everyone on the bus. The tour I paid for didn’t include either lunch or entrance to the wildlife sanctuary as I’ve done enough wildlife sanctuary’s/zoo’s over the last few weeks and I’m sure I ... read more

Day 224: Sunday 8th February - Arriving in Cairns After a bus ride around Magnetic Island, a ferry ride to Townsville, a bus transfer to the airport, a flight to Cairns and a bus transfer from the airport (makes me tired writing it, never mind doing it!),I arrive at my hostel in Cairns 6 hours after I’d left my hostel in Townsville. After all the travelling I’m shattered but Ricky who I did Fraser Island with is staying here and I’ve agreed to a pool challenge with him. I lose by the odd frame in seven, but more importantly its good catching up with Ricky who is without doubt one of the best people I’ve met in Australia. Ricky is off to Melbourne tomorrow, and he tipped me off about this hostel which looks like one ... read more

Day 221: Thursday 5th February - Making it through to Townsville just in time It’s a ridiculously early start this morning as I’m catching a bus at 6.15am. When it doesn’t turn up until almost 7am I must admit to having resigned myself to there being no bus north to Townsville for the third successive day. Thankfully, the bus driver gets off the bus and announces that he’s intending to drive to Townsville. I would love to sleep on the almost 5 hour journey to Townsville but I have a sense of foreboding that arriving in Townsville is far from a given which makes me restless. Just before we reach Ayr (not to be confused with the Scottish seaside town) I see a sign flashing above the road which I think says that the Bruce Highway ... read more

Day 215: Friday 30th January - Upgraded to a better boat and a mad dash to get aboard in time I get a call from the tour agency that’s dealing with my Whitsunday’s booking whilst I’m hanging around the hostel waiting for my bus from Mackay in the late morning. As there is only me booked on the Eureka II which sails tomorrow they are prepared to upgrade me for free to a better boat which sails today. Result! It sails at 3:30pm which is okay as my bus will arrive in Airlie Beach at 2:30pm giving me just about enough time to make it. My Greyhound bus is however an hour late leaving Mackay (entirely predictable) which means I’m not going to get to Airlie Beach until 3:30pm. I call the agency and they reassure ... read more

Day 214: Thursday 29th January - A relaxing day in Mackay So much for a lie in this morning. The dorm I’m staying in is full of people getting up early to go to work. Mackay like Gladstone isn’t really on the backpacker circuit and most people staying here are working. Anyway, I need to be up to see what the options are to get to the Eungella national park, home to the duckbilled platypus. I found out last night that there was no tour going from the hostel so I went to sleep thinking that hiring a car today was the best option. Wanda, who runs the hostel finds out that it will be $73 to hire a car for the day so similar in price to what the tour would cost. The only drawbacks ... read more

Day 211: Monday 26th January - Australia Day spent watching turtles nesting on the beach I kindly get a lift down to the marina in Gladstone where I’ve got an hour to kill before my boat transfer departs for Heron Island. I spend it getting breakfast - probably the most expensive beans on toast I’ve ever had at $8.50 (4 pounds)! The catamaran journey across to Heron Island is equally as expensive at $232 (110 pounds) for a return. Half way through and with choppy seas I’m feeling a little green so find it best to take a snooze before we arrive at Heron Island at 2pm local time (it being an hour ahead of Queensland). Heron Island was found in 1843 and named after the abundant reef herons here. If it was to be discovered ... read more

Day 206: Wednesday 21st January - Meeting the self-drive group in Hervey Bay Leaving Noosa behind, it’s a 5 hour bus drive north to Hervey Bay. Even for seemingly small distances on the map it’s always a long journey between them in practice in Australia. Thankfully, the time passes quickly as I get talking to a teacher from West Yorkshire, Natalie. When Natalie gets off in Rainbow Beach I can’t believe we’re 3 hours into the bus journey.....I don’t think we stopped talking for more than ten seconds. There is a mini-bus waiting to collect me and take me to the hostel when I arrive in Hervey Bay. By the time I get to the hostel which is on the outskirts of the sprawling Hervey Bay, 7km from the centre I’m short of time to get ... read more

Day 203: Sunday 18th January - The Sunshine Coast doesn’t live up to its name I almost miss my bus to Noosa this morning. For some reason I’ve got it in my head that it leaves at 11am. Thankfully I check just in time and it turns out it leaves 45 minutes earlier which gives me just about enough time to quickly pack my bag and rush to the bus station. I arrive at Noosa up on the Sunshine Coast at 1pm. Although my hostel turns out to be just across the road from the bus stop, I make a hard job of finding it by using a less than reliable map which takes me up at least 200 steps, which is not what you want to be doing with a heavy back pack on and ... read more

Day 199: Wednesday 14th January - Meeting up with another member of the ‘Cusco Posse’ I leave the hostel this morning before I need to. I’m keen to check if I left my sunglasses case in the post office in Surfers Paradise whilst I was emptying my bag of its contents posting stuff home yesterday. I end up having to wait around for the post office to open and when it eventually does they’ve not found it. Never mind, I’ll pick up a replacement case in Brisbane this afternoon. Need to dash for my bus now - it’s a shame it’s not half an hour later as there is a Oakley store which I pass on my way which is sure to have a replacement case but I have no time. Day 197: Monday 12th January - Taking a surf lesson I leave Byron Bay this morning at 8:30am catching the bus up to the Gold Coast. My itinerary says I’ll be arriving in Surfers paradise at 9:10am, so I’m expecting a really short journey but I didn’t realise that time in Queensland is an hour behind New South Wales. I get a free transfer to my hostel on arrival at Surfers Paradise. It’s a good job I do get a transfer as its 4km to my hostel - I’m right on the edge of the city here, further out than I realised. This turns out to be one of the things I don’t like about my stay at Surfers Paradise. I can’t check in until 1pm so I drop my bags in storage and head down ... read more
