I've been in Vietnam for 3 days and decided to go back in Thailand. Vietnam is far from exciting as I suspected, having visited most of SEA. This said, I'm leaving because it't too expensive and it's simply lacks the 'Wow' feeling I got in Cambodia or Thailand. As for scamming, I went around central Saigon at the back of a motorbike for about 2 hours, I decided to give him 10$ since he'd been so nice, then he wanted 120$ !!!!!!
I moralised him a bit and gave him the original offering.

My friend just sent me this link to your story about Mr Malik after I told him about what happened to me in Vietnam 3 weeks ago. Having read your story and the comment below I realise now for certain i was scammed. I have gone through the exact same experience! This is unbeliavable!! It certainly clarifies any uncertainty I had as to whether or not I had been scammed. This is because after all my money had been collected up over a couple of days in the exact way you described they had the opportunity to just disapear and it'd be over. However for some reason Mr Malik had me following him and Mr Alex (Mr Ali with u) to Macau Casino in cambodia to complete the game. I bussed it from Saigon but got held up at the border as it closed over night after so I missed the meet. Mr Malik then told me to meet him and Mr Alex in Thailand to finish the game. I ended up flying to Bangcock from phnom penh. I phone Alex on arrival and Mr Malik answers. He accuses me & Mr Alex of cheating HIM! He Tells me that Alex is going to be locked up for scamming him and that I will be too. Alexs brother Dave phones me and confirms Alex is locked up and that Mr Malik will likely have the Vietnamese Mafia waiting for me at HCMC airport where I had to return for my bags etc. This was obviously all complete bullshit I realise now, but at the time I couldn't be sure as I still wasn't sure if I was being scammed or not! It's bizarre as they already had my money in Vietnam so there was no need for all this shit. They managed to drag me round 3 different countries and scam $17000 dollars from me which has left me with credit card debt and effectively ended a planned year of travel in less than a month. I hope that the next person to encounter Mr Malik and the rest of them gets a chance to read this before it's to late.
I have a phone number that is still working for Mr Malik if anyone wants to speak to him. I phoned him a week ago from the UK and he answered. He's still not admitting its a scam!

Me Too! Dude, I've just come back from Cambodia and had exactly, exactly, the same scenario pulled on me. The sister was going to be coming to my home town of Brisbane to volunteer as a nurse. The Mr Malik character from Brunei, the amounts ($40,000.00 U.S.), the extended credit, the whole lot. They got $3,000.00 U.S. out of me and fucked the start of my first overseas trip.
Then I return to Australia and there is a message on my mobile's message bank ('cause before the game I've given contact details for the sister on the strength of the volunteering experience in the coming year) from a colleague of Mr. Ronald (the dealer) saying that "he had been one of the people who had lent him the money and did I remember the incident?" I replied that all my dealings with Mr. Ronald were done.
Then I decided to Google "Mr. Malik" and there's your story almost word for word the same as mine. Commiserations, I don't know if I feel better or worse.

Welcome home Hope you are coping with being back in the UK after such an amazing trip. We have followed your trip since South America and you inspired us to write our own blog during our 6 month RTW trip. We set off last Jan and got back in July. Even though our trip was shorter than yours it was amazing and a life changing experiance. We are still settling back into normality. Just wanted to say thanks for the info for planning our trip.

Shopping in Hoi An I don't normally make shopping a part of my travels, but I have set aside a few hundred dollars to buy a suit and some nice clothing when I'm there in a few weeks.
How easy was it to post your goods back home, and what did it cost? Will I be able to do this on a Saturday? (If the post office is only open on weekdays, do you think perhaps I could pay someone at my hotel to make the arrangements?)

Not much has changed.. Hi :) I found your blog by accident, and now I'm hooked! I live in Ottawa, Canada and also have a severe case of wanderlust. I visited Indonesia in 1992 and had many good laughs at this post. I *loved* Bukit Lawang, but I must say that I was shocked to hear that the town has grown to over 2,000 people. There were less than 100 when I was there. But rest assured, the rickety bridge was still there...and the orangutans were still amazing. I remember those g-d little doors in Lake Toba as well (and how many times I smashed my head on them!). Not much has changed sadly, in terms of the Indonesians ripping off the tourist. Must be a lot worse now after all that's happened though. I love your blog and will look forward to reading about your travels regularly!
