Geo: 51.8688, -1.3786We came to Woodstock, on the edge of the Cotswolds, to see Blenheim Palace. Breakfast was "the full English" to the delight of the children, and we were off to the Palace early...too early, we realized at 9am, because the Palace didn't open till 10.30am (we were welcome to wander around the 2000 acres of Parkland - but it was -6 degrees, so although sunny, that had little appeal. We were lucky to see a sign pointing to the grave of Winston Churchill as we left the grounds for a drive - and had read about it in Notes From A Small Island. Just lovely - a peaceful parish church, where the last few generations of the Spencer Churchill family are buried (that's the family name of the Dukes of Marlborough). A real little ... read more

Geo: 51.5206, -0.124038Day 3. Pretty VillagesCherhill to Woodstock (via Lacock and Castle Combe)Everyone else started early with jetlag, but I seem to have adjusted to the change in time zones just fine. We packed up the joinery in the morning and then set off. We drove to see Salisbury Hill, the long Barrow, some smaller barrows and Avesbury, enjoying the beautiful, crisp day and the crunch of frost beneath our feet.We then had a delicious breakfast at a truck stop and drove to Lacock. In Lacock we walked around the beautiful little village (used in Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, and Emma). Then toured the Abbey. The inside was closed but we walked through the cloisters which were used in Harry Potter! We then had lunch and drove to Castle Combe. Castle Combe has also been used ... read more

Geo: 51.8592, -1.37178Steven, Tom and I had a dreadful night, abandoning all pretenses of sleep at 4am. That did, however, mean we were up and out of the cottage quickly (by 8.15am) - we hadn't understood that the breakfast provided the first day wouldn't be repeated, so we were also looking for a feed!Silbury Hill, the barrows, the stone circle of the Sanctuary, and the long Avenue of standing stones leading into the Avebury Stone Circle - there was something major going on here 5000 years ago! The Neolithic people built these stone henges, and huge mounds and we really don't know why. The frost was thick and the grass icy white and crunchy, and we had these sites all to ourselves!!Breakfast at a roadside truck stop cafe - just brilliant, bacon and egg and sausage ... read more

Geo: 51.5205, -0.124248Day 2. BathBathWe started the day with a short walk from our cottage to see the white horse and the monument. We then had breakfast with milk from glass bottles and set off to Bath.We realised we had a problem though upon going to our car as the temperature was still sub-zero and frost was covering the windscreen! We then drove to Bath. Here we started by touring the Baths and sampling the water (which tasted gross!) They were very beautiful and it's so interesting that their existence was completely forgotten! We also had a peek into the pump room (now a restaurant) where it was easy to imagine Jane Austen's characters promenading. We then had lunch and went to the Jane Austen museum. This was definately the highlight of my day! We learnt about her ... read more

Geo: 51.4352, -2.00278We were so excited, when we woke, to find frost on the ground and icicles on the former windows. As the sun came up, we scampered outside to see the Cherhill White Horse, carved into the chalk hills behind our cottage, and the Lansdowne monument (38m stone obelisk), both 18th century works. Breakfast of eggs on toast, kindly provided by our hostess, then out the door. We had a little excitement when (after removing a significant layer of ice from the car!) the warning light on the car came on red, but as it only related to an oil service, the hire company says to drive on. We took a scenic drive in the beautiful (cold) sunshine - G thinks it always shines in England, and so far, she hasn't been disappointed!! - through ... read more

Geo: 51.5206, -0.123864Day 1. The world's longest dayBrisbane to Cherhill We had a 34 hour day thanks to the help of time zones! On Sunday night we had dinner at Aunty Amanda's and then she and Grandad drove us to the airport. We had a 12:45 flight but it was delayed to 1:30, which meant we spent a lot of time in the airport! I got to experience some interesting angles of Brisbane, lying on the floor trying to get some rest.We then flew 8 hours to Hong Kong and then after a 1 and a half hour stop over had a 12 hour flight to London. The first flight was very turbulent, but the second was a lot more pleasant (fortunately given the flights length!!) On that flight I watched Becoming Jane which was lovely ... read more

Geo: -27.4035, 153.11After a busy day getting everything ready (and a ridiculously early start thanks to some noisy kookaburras at 4am!), we headed off to the airport, via a lovely family dinner at AJ & Nigel's - they will have moved house by the time we get home! Our Monday was already going to be long - boarding at midnight, then 7 hours to Hong Kong, a 2 hour break, then another 10 hours to London, then a car trip to Cherhill (near Avebury in Wiltshire). But a 90 minute delay in the departure from Brisbane tested our energy levels at the very start of the trip - so hard to keep awake at midnight when there is nothing to do but wait...I think we (me!) were asleep before takeoff, and slept most of the way to ... read more

Geo: 35.79, 140.32The unexpected side effect of having amazing rooms looking directly onto the temple was the temple bells at 6am, pealing loudly through the dark!We later woke on our tatami mat futon beds - ready for a Queen size mattress now! - and Steven and I took a last chance for a bath (again, the only people there, in our respective rooms). We got the kids up, organized suitcases for the last time and checked out at about 10am (leaning the bags at the hotel) and booking a taxi to the train station for the afternoon. The main street of Narita is extremely traditional, full of quaint shops, small restaurants and one of the largest temple complexes in Japan. However, it does NOT have anywhere selling any style of western breakfast....we convinced the kids that ... read more

Geo: 35.3643, 136.352Steven didn't sleep well - stressed about travel and getting us all through everything as we are all tired - so we were up and out of the hotel by 8.15am, leaving our bags at reception. We caught the shuttle bus back to the station, were surprised how close it was, and then walked up the main boulevard to the castle. A consequence of total destruction by war is that modern town planning can provide wide boulevards with outstanding lines of sight for the castle! We found the place that Tripadvisor recommended for breakfast, quite near the castle - it claimed to be an American diner (it wasn't like any I've ever seen!) but it did great burgers and bacon and egg breakfasts, which put everyone in a great mood. The castle has only ... read more

Geo: 34.8, 134.756We got up and, with clear whether, headed up the mountain to the ropeway up Mt Misen. Good old Tom, who is seriously scared of heights but takes all this stuff in his stride. It was a lovely walk through the forest (10 mins) to the ropeway station, then up 371m, then change to a gondola and across to Shishiwa Station at 433m. We then hiked around the top of the mountain to the summit. First, after about 20 mins, we arrived at the Kiezu-no-hi, where the holy fire lit 1200 years ago by a holy man still burns - this fire was used to light the Peace Flame in Hiroshima. The temple there is for lovers... The brochure was funny as it described the Seven Mysterious Wonders of Mt Misen - one is ... read more
