Geo: 37.9525, 23.8706Matt's blogOne of my favorite meals was when we had gyros in the square. It was a delicious and amazing blend of modern and traditional. Gyros is fries, meat and tomato and lettuce and onions wrapped up in pita bread. You could also have it with tzatiki. You could see it being made and it was really fast. The man cut the meat off the skewer and put in all in the bread and wrapped it up. At "Gods Restaurant" I ordered some kebabs (minced meat cooked like a sausage) with pita bread and tzaziki. We went to "Gods Restaurant" two times - one on our first night in Athens and the other time, two days later on Tom's birthday. For entrees at "Gods Restaurant", we had grilled octopus. It was chewy and you ... read more

Geo: 37.9525, 23.8706Day 17. DelphiWe started late (breakfast at 9:30) and had a lovely breakfast at our hotel. Then we drove two minutes to the ruins of Delphi. The modern town was originally on top of the ruins, until they realised what was underneath and moved the entire modern town!! We looed at the museum, however unfortunately one Greek urn is starting to look much like the others! But, it was very well done and there were so many impressive things. Then we spent a bit over an hour walking around the ruins. Personally, I feel that these are the best ruins we've seen so far in Greece. They were very well preserved, there was a great amount of information available on the boards, and it was extremely impressive! They also showed clearly what they looked ... read more

Geo: 38.4814, 22.5066The hotel at Delphi is in a wonderful location, but could do with some soundproofing (we could hear the neighbours far too clearly!) with dogs barking outside through the night, and the beds were very very firm! So we didn't get moving until almost 9am, and didn't finish breakfast until 10am.Luckily, we are one kilometer to the archaeological site. We enjoyed the wonderful museum (again, a lot of European money has been spent developing this museum!) with its wonderful Kouri, carvings etc. We saw the silver bull - 2.5m long, made of silver and the gift of Croesus (hence the saying "rich as Croesus"). It was the first large-scale statue made all from forged metal - the bull is made of sheets of silver. We also saw the wonderful charioteer - his 4 horses (or ... read more

Geo: 38.4708, 22.5659We got up and left Nafplio before the town awoke (at 8.15am!) - couldn't get a coffee from the closed gelateria and the corner store wasn't open! (Luckily the bakery in the way out of town was open for us to buy our lunch AND made ok coffee!)We drove to Corinth under cloudy skies, but our weather fairy worked her magic and the sun come out as we arrived in Corinth. Again, a very good museum, with displays from throughout the periods of history - Mycenaen era, Classical Greek and the arrival of the Romans. Corinth has been continually inhabited since 4000BC except for a few years after the Romans invaded in 146BC. I was amazed to learn that in 1990, antiquity thieves had broken into the museum and stolen 288 artifacts - most ... read more

Geo: 37.9536, 23.8708Day 16. The Drive to DelphiNaflion to DelphiWe woke up quite early and had a lovely breakfast left out for us. Then we packed up and set off. Disappointingly, we found that we were too early for the Grocery Store to have opened to buy lunch, or for the Gelateria for coffee. Fortunately we found that a bakery nearby was open to buy our lunch. We then drove to Ancient Corinth, where St Paul preached. We went inside the museum, and were the only tourists there! It was so surreal to walk along the same paths that St Paul did. We crossed the road to look at the ruined Ampitheatre and then got back in the car. We ate our lunch in the car and drove to Delphi. On the way we crossed Europe's longest bridge, ... read more

Geo: 37.7273, 22.7527MycenaeWe woke up and had a delicious breakfast at our apartment. Then we drove a short distance to Mycenae. Stopping only at the Gelateria for Mum to get a good Italian coffee!Mycenae is a pre-ancient Greek settlement. We walked around the site of the old town, admiring the view and the ruins. Unfortunately, all the signshad been removed for refurbishment, so a lot of guesswork went into figuring out what everything was!!! We explored the large settlement and ventured a short way into the ancient drainage system - until the boys reached the point where the roof was held up by scaffolding! We had a picnic lunch with a beautiful viw, and were promptly swarmed by stray cats, who we feed our leftovers to!Then we went down the road to the Treasury of Atreus, which ... read more

Geo: 37.7273, 22.7527There was no choice but to start slow - breakfast wasn't served until 9am. But actually, that suited fine - we enjoyed the sleep in and had our breakfast of stale cake, nice bread and rolls with ham and cheese, Greek yoghurt with jam/stewed fruit and olives - lots of big fat olives. We bought bread, and then I raced off to buy decent coffee from our Italian gelateria friend. We then hopped in the car (slightly concerned that someone appears to have unsuccessfully tried to break into the car!) and drove up the road 30 mins to Mycenae. Mycenae was founded, according to legend, by Perseus, son of Zeus. He used Cyclops (mythical giants) to build the walls. His grandson was the King for whom Hercules performed the twelve labours. Geo: 37.5535, 22.8024Day 14. NaflionAthens to NaflionAfter packing up our hotel room, we headed out for breakfast at our new favourite bakery (where we had breakfast on Friday). Then we caught the train to Syntagma Square where we watched the changing of the guards. We were an hour early for the 11 o'clock big procession, but that meant we could see the smaller ceremony at 10. The most hilarious thing was watching Mum stop to take a photo, not seeing the guards marching up behind her, then hearing us call out to her start waving to us, not turning around!!!After the 10 o'clock ceremony we walked around the square for a bit, stumbling on a Sunday morning mass. We stopped and went inside to look at the mass, noticing the differences between Greek Orthodox masses and ... read more

Geo: 37.5669, 22.798We packed up and were able to leave our bags at the hotel before grabbing breakfast and jumping on the metro to Syntagma Square - we were moving ahead of schedule, so saw the 10am Changing of the Guards up close (with just 3 guards) before the big ceremony at 11am. We went for a quick wander, as we were so early, going through very ordinary streets until,we stumbled across the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Annunciation (Cathedral) of Athens. Mass was going on, and the place was buzzing. Choirs of older men with magnificent deep voices, 3 priests popping in and out from the richly decorated altar screen, people venerating icons around the church - it was incredible to watch! Then back to the Square for the changing of the guards (stopping to buy those ... read more

Geo: 37.9792, 23.7166Awake in the dark, watching the luminescent hands on my watch tick away. Then suddenly, a knock on the door, parents coming in, siblings awake, and hugs in all directions. After unwrapping my wonderful present, we headed out into Athens to find breakfast. After a quick trainride, we stopped for a traditional breakfast bread as "just a snack". We headed down through the plaka, or old town, to see the old Roman Agora or marketplace. As we were still hungry, we had another breakfast, where Matthew had a toasted sandwich and fries for breakfast! We then went into the Agora to see the amazingly well preserved ruins. This took a couple of hours but as the Agora was used for 100s of years, this did not get boring. After this we walked back through ... read more
